World Literacy Month

LAST WEEK: Man Behind the Badge Rotarian Kevin Mortimer, our newest Club member, told
us about his life journey. He lives at Bullengarook with
his wife, Nicole and children, and has a business office in
the Gisborne ‘CBD’.
With the classification of Mortgage Lending Services,
Kevin has had extended experience in banking and
finance, having held a number of managerial positions with
regional and city banks.
Kevin said he is looking forward to his involvement in Rotary and in our club projects. ….Ed. Elaine Gregory

THE FRED BARNETT ROTARY AWARD Members of the Rotary Club of Gisborne are eligible to be nominated for this
prestigious award, instituted by the Club in the 2004-05 Rotary year. The President will very soon appoint four Club members, one of whom should
be Hon. Life Member Val Barnett, PHF, and one the President Elect, with two past presidents (thus forming the Fred Barnett Award Sub-committee) to
assist him in considering the suitability of nominated candidates. Nominations should be made in writing as soon as possible to the President,
indicating why the candidate is nominated. Criteria for the Award include favourable comparison of the candidate’s attributes with those of PP Fred
Barnett.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW RECOGNITIONS In 1957 The Rotary Foundation launched Paul Harris Fellow Recognition in memory of the founder of Rotary International, requiring a contribution of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation. The Board of the Rotary Club of Gisborne is seeking nominations from its members, of persons they deem worthy of the ideals of Rotary International and living a life of service consistent with those ideals, for nomination as a Paul Harris Fellow. The qualities for nominees within the Club include selfless personal contribution and outstanding service to Club life, to Club service, to Committee service, to District and to Rotary International. The qualities for nominees within the Community include selfless personal contributions of a sustained humanitarian nature conducted with integrity in any of a wide range of community, youth, international or vocational endeavours. It is possible to nominate persons who already have a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition who would then be eligible to receive a new lapel pin, e.g. PHF with one sapphire, etc. etc. Nominations should be made in writing to the Club Secretary for the Nominating Committee, with details of the nominee’s qualities of service, by 30th April 2010.

WORLD WATER DAY March 22nd is ear-marked as World Water
Day, and according to the Water &
Sanitation Rotarian Action Group,
Rotarians are engaged in about 2,000
active clean water projects worldwide.
Around 2.5 million people around the
world lack access to clean water and
sanitation, which is why The Rotary
Foundation selected water and sanitation
as one of the six areas of focus in its
