Greetings Fellow Rotarians:

It’s appropriate that August is membership and extension month, and nothing is more important than building bigger, stronger clubs. This year's Membership Seminar is set for September 8 at the Market Creek Events Center located at Euclid & Market in San Diego. Bob James, Jr., District Membership Chair, will present IGNITE, a program to recruit and retain members developed by our RI Director Ken Boyd. This is a very effective program - Ken had great success increasing worldwide membership as Membership Development Chair several years ago. He has refined his successful past plan to meet today’s membership challenges.

I hope each club president, president elect and membership chair will attend the Membership Seminar. It can also be very beneficial for our newest Rotarians who are often the best source of future members. All club members who would like to attend would be most welcome. Everyone who attends the seminar will come away with some creative ideas for helping us grow. I’ve attended several of Bob's seminars, and I’m continually impressed with his grasp of the subject, enthusiasm and presentation style. Please make the time if you can, it will be a morning well-spent.

Maintaining our current membership base is just as important as finding new members. Part of the IGNITE strategy states that “new members need a friend and a job”. In fact friendship is one of the cornerstones of Rotary for any member. Having projects that add value to our communities locally and globally are what drive us as Rotarians. Peace Through Service says it well. The importance of Making a Difference cannot be over emphasized.

Six new clubs were chartered this past Rotary year:

• Escondido After Five• Chula Vista Sunset• Coronado Binacional• Convoy- San Diego• Naval Base San Diego• United Service Rotary Club ( E club)

Look these clubs up in the Directory. If you’re in the area stop by for a visit or try an E Club make up. You will be welcomed at either venue. New clubs are just like new members - they need your support. It’s pretty daunting to a start up a club, and a friendly veterans’ face is reassuring.

The family of Rotary is all of our jobs.

Dick Stevens

P.S. The Eco Rotary Club of Solana Beach is a provisional club that meets at 5:30 pm every Thursday at the Solana Beach Boys & Girls Club, Center for Healthy Life Style. Their focus is sustainable practices.

NEW ROTARACT CLUB GETS INDUCTEDMembers of the newly-created Rotaract Club of San Diego State University-Imperial Valley enthusiastically applauded as they were inducted on May 24. Rotaract Clubs are a Rotary-sponsored service club for people ages 18 to 30.

Past District Governor Larry Sundam said it’s the first Rotaract Club chapter for the Imperial Valley. He outlined the ways that the more than 8,400 Rotaract clubs worldwide have helped their surrounding communities as the SDSU-IV chapter was welcomed Thursday. “Rotaract is limited only by your imagination in terms of what you want to do,” Sundram said.

Elsa Soto is the vice president of the Mexicali Rotaract chapter and said she helped create the ImperialValley chapter after noticing there wasn’t one here. Thomas Negron Jr. will be the president of the Rotaract Club of SDSU-IV and said he is excited about the club’s first project Saturday where members will help clean up graffiti around Calexico.

The group will meet at 5:30 a.m. at the Calexico Starbucks and invites anyone interested in helping or interested in the club to join them.

“Rotaract is really one of the best examples of a student organization which can help make a difference both in our community and more particularly on this campus,” SDSU-IV Dean David Pearson said. “The types of people that gravitate to this type of organization are, in my view, the future leaders of the Imperial County.

RAMONA CLUB FIGHTS HUNGER WITH RIBS

Ramona Rotary donated $1,500 to the Ramona Community Center’s Nutrition Program during the Center’s Rib Fest fundraiser. The Ramona Community Center nutrition program was established to serve the senior citizens living in Ramona or outlying areas. Meals are delivered to the homebound, and dinner-style meals are served at noon weekdays at the Ramona Community Center. Ramona Rotary Club has volunteered and supported the Center for many years as one of our community service projects.

Presenting the check to Executive Director Ray Cardona is then-President Thad Clendenen. Pictured with Cardona and Clendenen from left are Rotarians Bob Vaughn, Carol Kinney, Christie Carlson, Sharon Greene, Joan Renaud and Patrick Osio, who volunteered at the event.
