Make-Up: Keith Carpenter, David Brunt and those who worked at Mentone Grammar Wheelathon President-Elect announcements In the absence of President Glenyse, President Elect Len Dawson opened the meeting. Rob Goode chaired the remainder of the meeting. Rob invited Damian West to welcome guest speaker for the evening Trisha Williams who is a fellow psychologist and classmate. Director and member announcements Secretary Brian Schauer advised that the City of Kingston invites the public to a community forum over the last two weeks of November to discuss long term vision for Kingston. The locations and dates of the six forums are listed at the end of this bulletin Treasurer Malcolm Finlayson gave a summary of cub finances at 13 November as follows: General A/C $15,837.27 Charity A/C $19,357.01 Projects A/C $11, 958.77 Carol Quayle gave final reminders on arrangements for the SIDS Walk for Remembrance held on Sunday 18 November. Photographs from the day are shown on later pages of the bulletin. Maureen McDonald gave a short report on the very successful Wheelathon held at Mentone Grammar School on 2 November. Rob Patterson from the school will attend this week’s club meeting. Thanks to all who assisted on the day. John Fowler reminded about the following dinners: • Fellowship dinner at Oscar’s Hangout, Mordialloc, on

Thursday 29 November. Len is to ascertain if the “limited licence” includes BYO.

• Club Christmas Dinner on Tuesday 18 December at Woodlands Golf Club. $50 per head. Donations of raffle prizes are requested please.

Bob Travers reported that he had attended a meeting at the National Bank along with Chris Chant of Mentone Primary School at which sponsorship awards were made to various community groups and schools. Only two other Rotary clubs (from other states) were involved.

Bob also is seeking members to assist with mock interviews for year 9 students at Parkdale Secondary College on Wednesday morning this week (21 November). Jeff Needham gave final arrangements for the golf parking at Kingston Heath over the past week. Len Dawson gave a short update on the Gnome Festival. A number of Parkdale Secondary School students have agreed to assist. Len circulated lists asking members to indicate their availability on the day (26 January) and on lead up days. David Wright spoke of the first interest meeting of a new Rotaract club for Kingston to be held on Monday 19 November. Sergeant-at-Arms In the absence of regular Sergeant Jack, again we had the Bob Travers and Keith Carpenter show. Keith started proceeding with two fines on himself – one for coming late and another for leaving early. Keith had plenty of topical media items to provide fine material – Adelaide Crows, motor cycle riders, the royals visit to Australia and last week’s large Tatts Lotto. Keith also carried on the quiz tradition with chocolate sweets as the prizes. Brian Schauer is a grandparent for the fifth time. Guest Speaker – Trisha Williams – Older Drivers. Trisha is a policy advisor for Vic Roads with specific involvement in the safer driving program for older drivers and disseminating publicity throughout the community. The main matters covered in her presentation under the following broad topics:

• Why we need to drive safer cars • Medical conditions and medicines • Driving safely • Victoria’s licensing system

Older people have less robust bodies than younger people and the risk of being killed in a motor car accident increases with age. One approach to the problem is to purchase newer cars that are generally safer than older ones. Motor car features that improve safety and reduce likelihood of injury include:

• Electronic Stability Control (ESC) • ABS – antilock braking system • Brake assist • Brake-force distribution • Traction control • Daytime running lights • Vehicle colour (lighter colours are better)

Driving and walking safely requires clear vision, physical coordination, mental alertness and quick reactions

Trisha Williams continued

Good vision is essential for safe driving. Eyes should be professionally examined every two years or more often. If glasses are prescribed, always wear them. There are many medical conditions that can affect driving as age increases. Have your medical condition monitored regularly. If you drive, make sure that your doctor knows. Keeping fit and healthy will make you safer as a driver and as a pedestrian. Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can affect driving ability and these usually have specific warning notices marked on the packet. For drivers BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) must be less than 0.05. Some medicines can increase the effects of alcohol – don’t mix medicines with alcohol. Tips for minimizing risk due to medications:

• Don’t let a condition go untreated • Ask your pharmacist about your medicine and

possible effects on your ability to drive • Read the labels • Check the effects of alcohol with any medicine • Monitor the effects of new medicines / dosages • Use one pharmacist • Don’t drive if affected by medicine

Older driver crashes - failing to select a safe gap

• Estimate the speed of oncoming vehicle/s • Estimate the distance of oncoming vehicle/s • Is there a safe gap to go through an

intersection, make a turn, enter the flow of traffic or overtake a vehicle?

At intersections wherever possible:

• minimise right turns • use intersections with turning arrows • avoid busy intersections • drive when there is less traffic

Victoria is the only State without age-based testing for licence renewal. It is possible to drive to any age as long as this can be done safely. Victorian older drivers are as safe as others, on a per licence basis. You need to monitor your driving ability Drivers must advise VicRoads of any serious or chronic medical condition or disability that may impair the ability to drive. Failure to do so might void your insurance so that your car and other cars are not covered. Reporting a medical condition does not necessarily lead to licence cancelation. It might require driver ability assessment and some modification or limitations. Trisha responded to a number of questions and, at the end of her talk, distributed a number of documents on the road rules and tips for older drivers. Carol Quayle proposed the thanks
