President’s Report Lyn Comer

I would like to begin with a thank you to our club members for entrusting me to be your President for a year. It has been a rewarding year for me and I have enjoyed and gained so much from this experience. We started the year at the Changeover Dinner with the induction of our new member Greg Ralph. Later in the year we also inducted Dr. Wes Miles. Then it was off to the USA with my partner Tony for a month of travelling, so thank you to those who filled in for me during my absence. During this month (July) there was finally a visit to the Dental Unit at La Trobe University with David Goode. It had taken a few years to organize this visit. We also had a visit from Worksafe. Terry Davies, a former Policeman, now working with Worksafe in the area of Harassment, bullying etc. At the start of August, Greg Penno arranged for his niece, Gina Hogan (International performer/singer) to perform at the Ulumbarra Theatre to raise funds for the MEC Project. I believe a great day was had by all and a very successful fund raiser. We were also privileged to have a visit from District Governor, Neville John and his lovely wife Rebecca. Neville congratulated us as a Club on our achievements and wished us well for the year ahead. Neville also left us with a message regarding when trying to gain new members: “We will take what time you can give as a Rotarian.” We had many interesting speakers throughout the year. Bridgette McDougal, Project Officer from City of Greater Bendigo, came and spoke about the new Organics Waste Bin collection. Some of us were already undertaking the trial (myself included) so there were many questions and comments. I was contacted by Carina from the Bendigo Bank at Strath Hill, regarding ‘foreign coin’ that the banks cannot cash in. There is now a collection box at the following Bendigo Banks: Strath Hill, Mitchell Street, Central Branch (Bath Lane) and Heathcote. This money is collected every 3 months and I take it to Keilor to Barbara and John Rafter, members of the Rotary Club of Keilor. It is then taken to the Rotary Club of Hornsby (Sydney) where it is sorted and redeemed for Australian Dollars. We will receive a percentage of this to go towards our projects.

The Club 18 308 Cabernet Sauvignon was launched at the Bendigo Flying Club on Friday 23rd September. This night had two functions - to sell the wine and also to hopefully attract potential Rotary members. Thank you to all those who assisted me preparing for the night and on the night, itself. We were not successful in gaining new members, but we did sell some wine and had a fun evening. Some of the proceeds of the wine sales will go to an organization called “FunFlight”. This voluntary organization takes children touched by adversity, for a joy flight. This program runs all over Australia. Their motto is: “Every Child Can Fly”. Although the day in October for the event was cancelled here in Bendigo - because of extremely bad weather, at the next event later this year, there will be at least 10 children sponsored by our club, flying around Bendigo. For several years we have supported several Primary and Secondary Schools in Bendigo, with end of year Prize awards and this year after discussions within the Cluster it was decided to redefine our support. During December, Mary and I visited Bendigo South East College; St. Therese’s and Strathfieldsaye Primary Schools during a staff meeting to present cheques to the Principals.

Just to mention a couple of events: ‘Lift the Lid’ – Rotary health, ‘Light the Night Walk’ – Leukaemia Foundation, Visit to Specimen Cottage, The Club’s 39th Birthday, Swap Meet, Hon. Howard Nathan QC., Dinner at Silks – 100 years Foundation – Polio Then and Now. The Christmas Market – What a great success the day was, with the helpers that day it all went smoothly with all stall holders happy. Thank you to Wes and Pam Vine for again hosting this Christmas Market at their ‘Mandurang Valley Winery’. The first year we ran the market it was approx. 38 degrees, this time a beautiful day. Everyone had just finished packing up when the rain started, and just as well they were all gone when the big wind storm ripped through! What will happen this year?

Finishing the year in December with a formal Dinner with the Raffle Trailer recipients; then a week later at my place with a BBQ and the drawing of the Raffle. Once again it went to a deserving family. John Lindsay was approached by Damian Carew owner of the Apco Service Station in McIvor Road, through Rotary, requesting if a Defib Machine could be purchased and placed inside the Service Station. This has been purchased jointly by our club and the ‘Apco Foundation’ of which Mary Anne Carew is a Director. The ‘Apco Foundation’ raises money for all different causes. So, it is not just a service station.

Annual Report 2016- 2017

International Report Director Hans Schajermann PP, PHF

This Rotary year started off well with the anticipation of a successful year for the Clubs signature International Project, the MEC PROJECT. We had been working for the previous few months in bringing an afternoon of song to the community by Gina Hogan, a woman who was born and raised in Bendigo, being a well-respected entertainer who has performed widely in Musical Theatre productions across the country and overseas. Gina brought her show, ‘THE WOMEN OF THE 60’S’, to the ‘The Capital’ on Sunday 31st of July. From a Club and Community perspective it was a successful event even though funds raised could have been better had this event received greater support from members and the community. This event raised in excess of $3600.00 and Gina made a personal donation of $400.00 to The MEC PROJECT from the sales of her CD. In the previous Rotary year, the Clubs’ Board had agreed to fund the MEC Project to at least $5,000.00 for the next three years. With this in mind and a contribution of $1,500.00 from the Rotary Club of Bendigo South giving us $6,500.00, we were able to apply to the Rotary Foundation for another grant on the basis of fifty cents in the dollar raised for an International District Grant totalling $9,750.00. This application was successful with the wonderful support that we receive from the District 9800 Foundation Committee and their advisor for our cluster Past Assistant Governor Anne Peace. This amount was forwarded to our ‘Twin Club’ the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh in March this year, and will be utilized when the French team of surgeons arrives for the next round of surgeries in June. We have supported the District 9800 International Committee’s efforts to Showcase International Projects in the community, firstly at the Australia Day celebrations at Lake Weeroona on the 26th of January, and again in April at Federation Square Melbourne. As I write this Report a further Showcase event is planned for the long weekend in June at the Echuca-Moama’s Steam Rally at Rotary Park Echuca. After a fair bit of time and effort we were able to have The MEC PROJECT registered with Rotary Australia World Community Service or ‘RAWCS’ as we in Rotary tend to refer to it. Registering with RAWCS has given the project recognition across the country as well as providing a tax deduction for contributions. To access all one has to do is look for rawcs.org and donate to Project No. 40 of 2016/2017- THE MEC PROJECT. To date this has generated $2,100.00 towards the Project with two individuals contributing a combined total ($100.00 and $1500.00 respectively) The MEC PROJECT has given us the opportunity to support children in Cambodia on an individual basis however, this year was also sad because the house run by the Cambodian Children Against Starvation and Violence Association, (CCASVA), in Phnom Penh was closed ending an association of almost ten years. Over this period of time, our money for housing, education, support and equipment was used supporting almost a thousand children who had been subject to many forms of abuse. There are two main reasons for its closure, firstly the downturn in the economy and the loss of purchasing power against the U.S. dollar in Cambodia, combined with the fact that the Cambodian

Government were taking a hard line on institutions and welfare organisations, including orphanages, that were seen to be exploiting the needs of children and their families. The Governments view is that children should be cared for at home within the family environment. Unfortunately they fail to recognize that some children are at grave risk within that environment. Whilst those involved are satisfied that there were no issues with the management of the house by CCASVA it appears that they were caught up in this new governmental approach. The Australian Cambodian Children’s Taskforce (ACCT), that was set up to fundraise in Australia for the house, and other projects in Cambodia, is still established and they are assisting the past house Manager Vannak Prum to keep a watchful eye over many of the children, and their families. Vannak is in the process of getting a school up and running for the displaced kids, so there may be opportunities to continue support into the future. In November our Club strongly supported the combined Goldfields Clusters Foundation Dinner at the Bendigo Racecourse with a large contingent of members. This Rotary year we have raised and are setting aside for future Cambodian projects.

Thank you Hans Schajermann.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION Chair Greg Penno. PP PHF

This Rotary year has been a very successful one for the Rotary Club of Bendigo Strathdale. For the Past three years we have been raising funds in support of our ‘Twin Club’ the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. These funds have a two pronged attack, and that is to support children who are afflicted by Meningoencephalocoele, more commonly known as MEC, and to provide training to the medical personnel at the Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh, who undertake the surgeries on children who are afflicted with this condition. As a result of the success that we have with THE MEC PROJECT, and combined with the fact that we were able to show these two parts have the ability to change lives in Cambodia we were successful in having THE MEC PROJECT registered with Rotary Australia World Community Service or RAWCS as we know it. This provides us with the opportunity to obtain monetary support for the Project from anywhere across the world with the donor receiving a Tax Deduction for their generous donation. This is recorded at; rawcs.or.au THE MEC PROJECT Project No. 40-2016-2017. This has generated $2100.00 for this Rotary year from two individuals and the Rotary Club of Altona City. In March this year with the generous support of the Rotary Club of Bendigo South ands the District 9800 Rotary Foundation Committee we were able to send $9750.00 to the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh, for use in this Project. The Club also attended the Goldfields Clusters celebration of 100 years of the Rotary Foundation at Silks Restaurant in significant numbers where we heard an explanation of what Polio really is. Several members of the Club donated $26.50 to the Rotary Foundation, this being the cost of the Foundation’s first project. Our Club has contributed $3,000.00 to The Rotary Foundation this Rotary Year. Thank you Greg Penno

Youth Services Report Director Lynne Cooper

Youth Services has been very active all year with great outcomes for our local future leaders. Our quarterly Bendigo Cluster Youth Directors meetings ensure good communication and some liaison with Echuca, Castlemaine and Rochester clubs. This year I took several months leave from meetings but was able to continue most youth work from home. Our Club actively supported the following programs.

National Youth Science Forum ( NYSF) A lot of time is spent assisting local students to apply. Youth Directors met with interested students and their parents for a combined clubs information session assisted by past NYSF students and parents. The Cluster agreed to pool financial resources for the students who were accepted. This is a new approach due to increasing cost of NYSF. One Girton Grammar (Declan Rochford) and 2 BSSC students (Caitlin Rowlatt and Lennon Logan) were successful and we have had excellent feedback from them since they attended NYSF in Canberra in January. In addition one Maryborough student who attends BSSC was accepted; one Castlemaine and one Echuca student also won places. Applications are now underway for the 2018 round. There are additional 200 places offered nationally and in our D9800 there will be 35 places available. We are partnering with Bendigo Discovery and Technology Centre and holding our information sessions there with the support of their director Jonathan Ridnell and Alissa Van Soest, past NYSF participant. 2017. The Conocophillips Science Experience Zac Llewellyn and Riley Andrews-Watt from BSE College attended different university programs and we will keep in touch with them in regards to NYSF in the future. Thanks to Tamra Blakely at BSE for her teaching support Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment ( RYPEN) The March camp was held at the Doxa Camp in Malmsbury, but from Bendigo we only had one BSSC student attend sponsored by our club. We hope attendance at October RYPEN will be greater. Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) The Cluster sent a group and our Club shared sponsorship of Jaiden Brandy, Latrobe University student. Georgia Smith, (Friend of Rotary) went as a leader again - a big commitment, well done Georgia. Nathan Jordan our participant from the previous year also worked on camp and Skye Anderson attended the dinner on behalf of our club. This year RC of Bendigo are co-ordinating RYLA again. Many thanks to Joy Bruce, Director for all her efforts to promote RYLA.

Annual Report 2016- 2017

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) RC Bendigo Sandhurst member Martin Ruffell is co-ordinating MUNA this year but despite our concerted efforts no local colleges are sending teams to MUNA. This is very disappointing. We will all assist with the catering and hope that next year will see a better response from schools.

Science and Engineering Challenge An initiative of the RC of Bendigo South took place on May 16 and our club contributed $500 to assist with costs. The program is held at BSE College. Another example of Rotary supporting science programs in our community.

School Awards Awards were given to three schools in term 3 and 4, 2016. Funding was increased to $200 per school to be used for support programs identified by the school staff. Our President Lyn Comer and Secretary Mary Preston presented the grants at staff meetings. All agreed this is a more effective and manageable way to assist our local schools for the present time.

Most of our students have presented talks at our club meetings with excellent feedback. We do try to keep in touch with them and seek their participation in club functions. Robert Stephenson, Head of Campus at Latrobe University and a FOR was moderator at a Youth Q. & A. at one of our mid-year meetings. Georgia, Skye, Zac, Riley, Jaiden, Lennon and Caitlin all participated in a very engaging discussion about the programs they had attended.

Each Cluster Youth Director has agreed to continue co-ordinating one of the major youth programs. With all Bendigo clubs still participate this will mean a shared approach to the administration work involved in managing advertising, recruitment and transport for the students who attend youth programs. Cost sharing has been discussed. NYSF will remain a cost shared program with all Clubs requested to budget $1000 in preparation.

My appreciation to our Board for their support and to the other Cluster Directors for terrific teamwork. Once again our thanks to the many Rotarians behind these youth programs and to Anne Peace and Gary McClure for their guidance.

Thank you.

Vocational Report Director Brian Owens

We had four enjoyable outings this year. Firstly, we went to the Dental Clinic at Latrobe University, which was an excellent opportunity to see what is happening within the Latrobe which we visit each week! The session was very informative and highlighted one of the excellent courses available for students interested in the “country learning experience” in Bendigo.

Secondly, we visited the Bendigo Historical Society‘s base – ‘Specimen Cottage’, in Hargreaves St., where we heard the history of the Cottage plus the session included time to browse through the records and information in the Cottage this was followed by a very enjoyable meal at the Lakeview Hotel. Thirdly, to the Discovery Centre, where Director Jonathon Ridnell outlined the history of the Centre plus the innovations and plans for the future of the Centre. This was followed by a meal of the Shamrock Hotel. Fourthly, after several attempts a group went along to the new Bendigo Hospital to visit and have a guided tour of the premises, it proved to be a very interesting place – though of course a place we do not wish to return to for medical attention!

Thanks to Pam for her assistance and congratulations to Lyn on a very good year. Thank you

Community Service Report Director Peter Kilpatrick PP PHF

The club was once again involved in the Light the Night evening in October. The evening is organised and run on behalf of The Leukaemia Foundation and all funds raised go to the foundation. We assisted by holding a sausage sizzle with all food donated by local businesses to the local group. The National Swap Meet was held in November. All Bendigo Rotary Clubs were involved. Our club was once again well represented by Gary Jones, Jan Walklate and Pam Luxford on the combined clubs catering committee. This is one of our major fund raising efforts. Most members of the club contributed to the weekend. Takings were down due to inclement weather on Sunday and the new formula for sharing the proceeds between the Car Club and the Rotary Clubs. The Clubs have met with the car club and a more equitable proceed sharing arrangement has been agreed to. The Christmas Market was held at the Mandurang Valley Winery. This is the second year we have run the market. Attendance was up, along with the profit. We had a very positive response from the stall holders. A special thank you to President Lyn Comer for all the work she did encouraging stall holders to attend; most of whom will attend next year. Other members also put in a special effort. We surveyed the people coming to the market to determine the best method of advertising and found Facebook the clear winner with radio coming next. We are looking at the third market on the last weekend of November. After a debrief, a number of changes will be made, hopefully to improve the overall experience and attendance. Once again Mary Preston organised selling Christmas cakes and puddings, with the funds going toward Foundation as well as the Club. We manned the Bunnings BBQ on the Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend. Luckily the supermarket and butcher were close by, as we continually had to stock up on more supplies. It was a successful day with over $600 raised. The following weekend saw us cooking breakfast for the SPAN (Suicide Prevention Awareness Network) Walk. All the food was donated and the donation tin located on the serving counter had over $300 dollars in it, which went to the network. To top off a busy Month we cooked breakfast for the Relay for Life walkers. This always involves a very early start and we never struggle for helpers who are prepared to brave the cold.

Peter Kennedy has once again represented the club well on the District 9800 committee for Camp Getaway. The new kitchen has been the main project for the last couple of years and Peter has spent considerable time on it. Our final activity is to sell our community raffle tickets at Strath Village. This is the second year Ken Longford has involved the club in this raffle. $2 dollars from every $2 dollar ticket comes back to the club. Not many raffles give that type of return. This year the money will go to Smart Pups so they can provide an assistance dog to a young local girl who has a debilitating medical condition. With the money the club is raising along with the money raised through the family’s efforts, a RAWCS grant of up to $10,000 has been approved on a dollar for dollar basis. Julie Vecht and Greg Penno have been the main drivers. None of the work we do would be possible without the help of our members, friends and other organisations. I have mentioned a few names, but there are many others who have put in a lot of time with the above activities; quite often un-noticed. A big thank you to all.

Thank you Peter Kilpatrick
