Speaker, Mr Kim Whye Kee

President Mark invited Rtn Mamta Shahani to introduce the Speaker, Mr Kim Whye Kee. Rtn Mamta advised that she had the pleasure of chairing last year’s Artisan of the Year Award Committee, and got to know such candidates like Mr. Kim. Mr Kim spent a decade of his youth in prison. He picked up pottery in the last few months of his sentence, and went on to graduate with a BA Hons. degree in Fine Arts at LASALLE College of the Arts in 2013.

He is the co-founder of Beacon of Life (BoL) and Beacon of Life Academy (BoLA), an initiative working with ex-convicts and at-risk youths, respectively, in the community. He has also worked on separate community projects with the boys of the Singapore Boys Home and residents from Taman Jurong.

Mr Kim recounted his life experiences, his coming from a broken home and subsequent bullying and beatings from schoolmates which resulted in his wanting revenge and eventual involvement in gangs, including the recruitement of more than 1,000 gang members. He spoke of his criminal activities including drug taking and his eventual incarceration in prison. He went on to share his inspiring and poignant story of his struggles after his prison term and his perseverance in pursuing his art passion and his work with at-risk youths through Beacon of Life and Beacon of Life Academy, as well as his art installations which gave a reflection of his life. President Mark called on Rtn Bala Venkatesan to extend the Club’s vote of thanks to Mr Kim. Rtn Bala advised that the Artisan of the Year Award helps to identify exemplary candidates from different walks of

lives and social contributions. Every year, Rtn Bala added, the Committee finds someone outstanding and last year was no less different. He warmly thanked Mr Kim for sharing his painful and motivating turnover of his life. In his closing remarks, President Mark advised that the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (Singapore) (FRCS) held its elections and he was pleased to announce that PDG Dr Philbert Chin, Rtn See Mee Lee, Vice President Hassan Moosa and PP Jimmy Ooi will be serving the FRCS Board. The Guide to Daily Living

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the

Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and

act upon them:

First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third: Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?

The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
