CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Happy New Year!

Yes, thanks to fixture scheduling and a succession of snow and ice, this, in the first week of February really is the first home game of 2013 for the Main.

Its six weeks now since we played out an entertaining 3-3 draw down here against Pontefract and in the period since, the 1st team have managed just two games; a Boxing Day win at Askern in the Doncastrian Derby and a 2-1 loss on our first ever visit to Knaresborough. This match programme contains reports on both those games for you to catch up on.

Also covered in this edition of Main Issue are the two games the 2nd team havae managed to get played in the same period as they’ve continued their impressive form in cup competitions, reaching the semi-finals of both the

Doncaster Premier Division KO Cup and perhaps more impressively the last four of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Challenge Cup, ahving upset another side from the County Senior League in the Quarter Finals.

Also in this edition of Main Issue we have all the latest results and tables, plus our usual features including a quiz on the African Nations Cup and also the 191 Q&A the people have been waiting for with assistant manager, groundsman and general local football guru Ian Wilson (or dad as I know him).

Anyway, enjoy today’s game and this programme and fingers crossed for three points come 5pm.

ON THIS DAY

2008 // NCEL DIVISION ONEBARTON TOWN O.B. 7-3 ROSSINGTON MAIN

Five years ago today saw Main play out one of their more eventful games of recent seasons as they were beaten 7-3 by Barton Town Old Boys at Marsh Lane. Although Main weren’t having the best of seasons this result actually came in the midst of a fairly respectable run of results, sandwiched between home wins over Pontefract and Worsborough Bridge.

Main found themselves behind as early as the third minute as Matt McKay put the home side in front, but Chris Lees equalised in the ninth minute to bring things all square. Midway through the half a Mark Anderson goal put Barton back in front, but again Rossington levelled things up as Will McGhie

made it 2-2 three minutes before the break, only for Barton to regain the lead on the stroke of half-time through McKay.

The difference between the sides would be Barton’s Gareth Barlow, two minutes after the restart Barlow said take that as he made it 4-2 and then struck a fifth for the home side quarter of an hour later. Still not out of it Main pulled it back to 5-3 with eighteen minutes to play through Michael ‘Chips’ MacDonald, but with five minutes remaining Barlow completed his hat-trick to secure the points and Gary Dickinson completed the scoring two minutes from time.

suffered this 1-0 home defeat to Worsborough Bridge Athletic on a miserable Tuesday night at Oxford Street.

A decent NCEL campaign was in danger of fizzling out for Main in February 1993 as following back to back defeats to Hucknall Town they

1991 // CENTRAL MIDLANDS LEAGUE PREMIERNEWHALL UNITED 3-1 ROSSINGTON FC

A disappointing start to the new year continued for Rossington as they travelled to Newhall United on this day twenty-two years ago. Rossington had lost three out of four of their 1991 matches thus far and that became four out of five away at the Derbyshire side.

Remarkably all the goals came in the first forty-five minutes, with only Andrew Whittle’s 25th minute goal providing any joy for the Rossington

contingent. The current Main management duo were both kitted out for Rossington that day with Steve Lodge in goal and player-manager Ian Wilson an unused substitute.

Unfortunately this poor second half to the season would continue well into the New Year for Rossington who wouldn’t record another victory until they hosted Brailsford in mid-April.

TODAY’S VISITORS

Louth Town was formed in May 2007 when Louth United decided not to continue fielding a team in the Central Midlands League. The Park Avenue ground had already been sold but local businessman Kerry Coggle with the backing of Steve Appleby, was able to secure a short term lease on the ground and with the support of the CMFL committee, and a group of willing helpers, Louth Town was formed.

After finishing a creditable 10th in their first season Town were rocked when manager Steve Morley announced that he could not longer continue managing the team. Andy Holmes was appointed but due to unforeseen work commitments had to stand down and 3 weeks before the start of the 2008-009 season, Paul Walden was brought into the club. Paul, who was previously manager of Skegness Town in the Lincs League has a wealth of experience and was able to bring a number of talented players into the club.

A WARM WELCOME TO LOUTH TOWNPaul made an immediate impact with the team, winning all but 3 of 28 league games during the season to win the league by 9 points and be promoted to the Supreme Division as champions. There was also a Challenge Cup semi final appearance which unfortunately resulted in an unlucky 1-0 defeat to eventual winners Sutton Town.

It was then decided that as part of their progression, the club would form a reserve team to play in the Lincs League for the 2009-2010 season.

The 2009-10 season proved even more successful as the first team won the Supreme Division by 8 points, won the CMFL Floodlit Cup and were finalists in both the CMFL Challenge Cup and the Lincs FA Senior Trophy. By winning the league, promotion to the NCEL was gained. They were also awarded the CMFL “Team of the Season” for the second year running.

LOUTH TOWNAs well as the first team and reserves, season 2010-11 saw the introduction of an ‘A’ team in the East Lincs Combination, a team in Division 3 of the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Sunday League as well as junior teams at U18, U13, U12 and two at U11, bringing the total number of teams playing under the Louth Town banner to nine.

In March 2011 manager Paul Walden left the club, but Louth acted swiftly and brought in former Selby Town duo Mick Gray and John Steeples who steadied the ship and guided the team through to the end of the season and a more than creditable 6th place finish in the White Wolves first ever season in the NCEL, the highest pyramid position finish of any Louth team ever.

There was a further twist to the Louth Town story in May 2011 as Gray and Steeples left the club by mutual consent. They were surprisingly replaced by Paul Walden, who agreed to return for a second spell in charge.

Louth Town’s new campaign is spearheaded by young manager Daryl Clare who made almost 500 professional appearances tallying up 200 career goals and five promotions as a player including international honors and twice winner of the Golden Boot. Daryl is assisted by long term friend and once team mate Carl Forman who brings a wealth of local footballing knowledge and tactical awareness, including strong commercial links within the area that will lead the club onto a promotion challenging season.

NCEL EASTER GROUNDHOP DETAILS ANNOUNCED

RESERVES & UNDER 19S LEAGUE PLANS SHELVEDA statement on the NCEL website this week made it known that the League will no longer be pursuing the possibility of forming Reserves and Under-19 Leagues.

The idea had been put forward to clubs earlier this season but at the League’s latest Management Board meeting it was decided that there was no point in going forward with the plans.

According to the statement the decision was made by the board having taken into account several factors, one being that only seven clubs attended a meeting in September to discuss the proposals.

Understandably there were many concerns from clubs about the leagues, not least travel costs, but also whether matches should be Saturday or midweek whether other grounds could be used with variable kick-off times and concerns over travel distances.

It was conceded that there would also be difficulties in achieving the formation of such a league in accordance with the guidelines put forward by the FA.

The statement concluded that the League appreciates that this decision will disappoint some clubs, but it was agreed by a strong majority that no further action should be taken.

MAIN IN ACTION

A satisfying derby win for Main in blustery conditions at Manor Way helped stretch the club’s unbeaten run to three games. Main took the game to Askern from the start and Brandon Fallon was almost in on goal in the opening minutes only beaten to the ball by the home keeper’s smartness off his line.

Askern had the occasional effort from distance, but it was Rossington who continued to have the better if things a curling dipping effort from Dean Thornton came back off the inside of the post. Fallon also came within inches of connecting when it matters, as he almost reached Danny Taylor’s low near post cross. Despite Main’s dominance on the game it was the home side who took the lead after half an hour; a chipped ball over the top releasing Mel Cotton one-on-one to slot home.

Within a minute though Main would be level as Brad Billam picked the ball up wide left and jinked into the area to deliver a low ball across the face of goal that was turned in at the far post by Niall Doyle. And five minutes before half-time the scoreline had been reversed as Nathan Fraser beat his man to get to the byline before delivering a deft cross into the middle that was turned home by Scott Spencer.

As with the first half Main and Fallon would be first to threaten in the second half, the Rossington striker this time denied by a good save as he struck a

fierce half-volley from Fraser’s nod down. Again Rossington continued to push with Fraser next to be denied by the keeper having been released by Thornton’s chip over the top.

Askern were beginning to force chances of their own with a fiercly struck near-post drive turned round the post by Liam Copley and from the resulting corner a firmly hit strike was thankfully blocked on its route to goal by an Askern defender.

Having survived this spell Rossington went back on the attack and Fallon finally got the better of the Askern keeper to make it 3-1 midway through the half. Neat play between Taylor and Spencer out on the right saw the latter deliver a near-post cross which Fallon controlled before slotting beneath the ‘keeper.

Askern weren’t done though and Main had Copley to thank for preserving their two goal cushion as he produced a great save after Villa got in behind the defence. The Main ‘keeper was replaced by Jordan Wildey for the closing minutes although he was helpless as Villa came close again minutes later, a dipping volley from distance coming back off the bar. The home side continued to create chances right to the death, but wasteful finishing cost them any hope of getting back into the game as a string of shots disappeared into the field behind the goal ensuring Main were able to hold out for the win in front of a crowd of 50.

MAIN IN ACTION

Main had problems from midday on Saturday when manager Steve Lodge was left two players short for the trip to North Yorkshire. The problem was confounded as the 2nd team had already left for their early kick-off in the Sheffield Association Cup quarter-final tie. An unfit Richard Spears volunteered to sit on the 1st team bench in case of emergency unaware that the emergency was to be his own when he was carried off needing hospital attention in the warm-up! Sadly this left a bare eleven to compete against in-form Knaresborough, which included Chris Hanson and Jono Mirfin, both making their return appearances after a month out. On a heavy pitch which was certain to test players’ fitness levels, the omens did not look favourable.

Unfortunately I witnessed the 1st half from outside the changing-rooms in the corner of the ground, partly caring for and providing a commentary to our injured substitute who was awaiting transportation to hospital, and partly chatting to the gateman as a healthy crowd filed in. The cancellation of the Harrogate Town game had boosted the Knaresborough attendance and my viewing point faded as that particular corner of the ground was obviously the most popular. Peering over the heads of the many

spectators, we did mount some attacks in the first half but our defence appeared under pressure at the far end and it was probably expected when the home side took the lead on the half hour mark. A change to Richard’s hospital plans meant that George and myself were to change roles for the remainder of the game, and I took up his place in the dug-out whilst George ferried his son to hospital back in Doncaster. Within minutes of rossingtonmy arrival in a sparse dug-out, Knaresborough increased their lead seconds before the interval when Hanson lost his footing in an attempt to clear leaving the home striker an easy tap-in.

The mood in the dressing-room at half-time was encouraging and positive despite the scoreline, and the players response magnificent. There was universal agreement that we were by far the better side in the 2nd half as we altered our formation and really took the game to our opponents. With Billam pushing on down the left and Taylor and Tunney tearing their defence apart on the right, we played all the football and became a much more potent threat. Doyle swivelled and drove a crisp shot into the net on the hour and this was followed by a number of attacks down both flanks that caused panic in the home defence. A strong penalty appeal was turned down when...

...Doyle was held and a defender appeared to handle on the floor, and crosses from both wings just lacked that vital touch. Jordan Wildey held a couple of low efforts but the main attacking now came from Main who deployed 3 at the back and also got the better of a 5-man midfield. The 2nd half performance had warranted at least a point, and it was

Knaresborough who were delaying and playing out time in the dying minutes.

IN RESERVE

The 2nd team progressed to the semi-final stage of the Divisional Cup with a resounding, emphatic victory over title contenders Bramley. With two league defeats against our visitors (the most recent being a remarkable 6-5 score prior to Christmas) this looked to be a difficult tie for the young Reserve side, who had teenagers Wildey, Bathgate and Chipamunga in the starting eleven. After a relatively even 1st half which we led 2-1, the floodgates opened after the break and the experienced visitors had no answer to the lively home attacks.

The scoreline could have been greater but from some good goalkeeping and a few near misses, but the tricky Chipamunga and the tireless energy of midfielder Brailey stood out in an excellent team effort. The goals were also shared out with Bathgate, Hart, McGee, Doyle, Brailey and Chipamunga all on target; a solo effort by young Marcel where he left 3 defenders and the keeper floundering and a dipping 30 yard free-kick by Doyle being the pick of an unexpected haul.

SAT 12TH JANUARY // SHEFFIELD & HALLAMSHIRE ROSEHILL PRESS CHALLENGE CUP QUARTER FINAL

JUBILEE SPORTS 4-6 ROSSINGTON MAINQuite surprisingly this game was settled in the 90 minutes when the scoreline ought perhaps to suggest “aet”. Jubilee Sports are a new side to the County Senior League and are unbeaten in Division 2, so another tough test was expected. However another Cup semi-final place was secured for the reserves with a workmanlike and gutsy performance on a poor playing surface at Chaucer Academy playing fields in Sheffield. The win was very doubtful when the home side built up a 3-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes but when we

pulled back the deficit with two quick goals they appeared to panic and suddenly found themselves in an unfamiliar situation (opposition likely to cause them problems) Two further goals turned the tide our way as the home side began to struggle with our fitness and pace on a tiring pitch and we just edged them out in the 2nd half when a late Coburn goal to secure a personal hat-trick won the match. Young Marcel “chipped” in with a brace and skipper Rowley was the other scorer in another impressive result.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 8. HARRY REDKNAPPInitially this piece was set to lament the smash and grab, overhyped, Sky Sports driven, money laden, debt-inducing nonsense of the last day of the football transfer window. But then as I sat and began to make a few notes on this very modern phenomena - one which is fast becoming the for Sky Sports what Valentines Day is for Clintons Cards (unnecessary yet highly lucrative hype) - one name kept cropping up over and over again; Harry Redknapp.

Harry, or ‘Arry as those with an aversion to H’s like to call him is in essence a cockney barrow-boy who can’t believe his luck. In a previous lifetime he would have been relegated to the backstreets around Smithfield Market, hair being ruffled by the local bobby, as he tried to palm off his wares on unsuspecting gentry. But this is 2013, so instead of a bobby ruffling his hair we get news agencies giving him air-time, and instead of trading fruit, he’s wheeling and dealing for over-priced and over-paid footballers.

Yes, Redknapp did well at Bournemouth, but since then what has he done, except for leave a trail of over-paid unnecessary signings that you can follow back to his stint at West Ham where this great man manager secured the services of Florin Răducioiu (went shopping at Harvey Nics than play for ‘Arry) and Marco Boogers (signed for £1million despite ‘Arry never having seen him play –

made 4 appearances). At Portsmouth he won an FA Cup, and they still enjoy his legacy at Fratton Park where thanks to ‘Arry’s squad assembling skills and eye for a bargain their currently looking at yet another administration and possible relegation to the 4th tier. Still, ‘Arry eh?

Just last month ‘Arry lambasted the squad he inherited at QPR; “There’s an awful lot of players at this club earning far too much money for what they are; far, far, far too much money… We’ve got a stadium that holds 18,000 we shouldn’t be paying silly money in wages”. Fast forward to this week and Chris Samba bowls into Loftus Road beneath a £12.5m price-tag on a four and a half year deal. What could possible go wrong? *cough* Portsmouth.

Just this week he likened the transfer window to gang warfare, before wading knee-deep into it; “We need a few new signings, I’ve had two goalkeepers on the bench tonight,” he whined, avoiding the fact that he put them there rather than say a youth team player with all the subtlety of a skyscraper. But that’s ‘Arry all over; says one thing, does another and for as long as come Deadline Day he’s willing to hang out of his car window and deliver lines like Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit any questions about his decisions, his methods and the chaos he leaves In his wake will be overlooked, because, well, because he’s ‘Arry aint he.

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

1919 Q & AAS ROSSINGTON MAIN WERE FORMED IN 1919, WE PROVIDE 19

QUESTIONS & 19 ANSWERS TO HELP YOU GET TO KNOW THE MAIN MENThis afternoon’s interviewee is the one you’ve all been waiting for;

Assistant Manager, Groundsman and Committeeman IAN WILSON

Q1. When was your debut for Rossington Main & who was it against?A1. Probably 1971, when I began teaching in Rossington, with Paul Perry as manager. Away at Thurnscoe in Don. Sen. Lge. We won 8-2 and travelled there in a Rossie Motors double decker bus, but had to walk the last half-mile as we encountered a low railway bridge. Q2. First footballing memory?A2. Junior School football on a Friday afternoon against other junior schools in North Wales.

Q3. First team you played for?A3. Borough United Youth (aged 15) and Penmaenmawr F.C. in North Wales Coast League (aged 16).

Q4. Which team do you support?A4. Always a Manchester United fan. Also Wrexham because they were the nearest League Club to home.

Q5. Which footballer was your boyhood hero?A5. Definitely Sir Bobby Charlton, the complete footballer.

Q6. Who do you consider the greatest player in your position? A6. I’ve played in almost every position from goakeeper to outside left but possibly best remembered in Rossington as a sweeper or midfield player in which case Beckenbauer and Zidane respectively.

Q7. What was the first professional game you ever went to watch?A7. It would have been a Liverpool game as an aunt lived in Anfield and I used to go there on holiday as a teenager (wished now I had relatives in Barcelona) If I was away in August I could usually get two games in less than a week with Everton just across Stanley Park.

Q8. If you could travel in time to attend any match ever which would you choose?A8. European Cup Final in 1960 I think, Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt, Real won 7-3.

Q9. What is your favourite ever football kit? A9. Liked the Station Hotel kit of early 80s. White v-neck with navy trim, navy shorts and socks. Umbro, simple but classy.

Q10. What make of boots do you prefer to wear? A10. Used to be Adidas but once borrowed a pair of Puma Kings fom a College mate and couldn’t believe how light they were.

Zambia after defeating Ivory Coast 11-10 on penalties a year ago. 7. JayJay Okocha for Nigeria, 8. Samuel Eto’o with 18 goals, 9. Mike SMith, 10. Libya, who will now host in 2017 instead, 11. Cape Verde Islands.

Q11. Favourite ground you have ever played at (apart from Oxford Street obviously)?A11. Greenock Morton in Scotland aged 17 for Welsh Schools. It was September and pitch was immaculate (like a bowling green)

Q12. If you could play at any ground in the world which would it be?A12. Old Trafford in the UK and Nou Camp and Bernabeu abroad.

Q13. What is your most prized footballing possession?A13. My Welsh Schools cap 1968. We beat England (twice - at Newport and Oxford) and Scotland (at Morton) We didn’t play in N.Ireland.

Playing for Welsh Amateur side at Wrexham, winning Junior Cup at Wombwell as player-manager for Station Hotel F.C. and then winning Central Midlands title with Station F.C. as manager losing just one League match all season (and that the last one at Kilburn M.W.).

Q15. What has been your favorite moment playing for Rossington Main? A15. Favourite moment PLAYING for Rossington Main was a diving header fom 15 yards at Oxford St. vs Edlington which also won game 1-0. Cannot remember the year (1970s) but do remember I rarely scored with my head.

Q16. Sum what Rossington Main means to you in 5 words or less. A16. Supporting Community, improving standards.

Q17. Who is the best player you have ever played alongside?A17. Dai Davies (ex-Wales keeper) and Gareth Edwards (ex-Wales scrum half) whilst at College in Cardiff. Gareth wasn’t a footballer really but played occasionally when not on International Rugby preparation and training.

Q18. Who is the best player you have ever played against? A18. Most famous must be Mel Charles (brother of John) when I was 17 and he was ending his career at Portmadoc F.C. The one person who gave me a run-around was a winger called Dai Whitney when I was playing left-back for Welsh Colleges v. Welsh Amateurs. He was going past me all the time and delivering great crosses. My mate Pat was playing left-half and he was an ex-Cardiff City pro who had come to College late in his career. He said “show him inside next time Wilson and I’ll hit him” I never have been an advocate of foul play but true to Pat’s word I forced him inside on the next attack. He left me for dead, skipped inside Pat and hit a 25 yarder with his left foot into the top corner. Pat and I just smiled.... Q19. Lastly, which other players would make up your dream 5-a-side team?A19. Nationally/internationally; Gordon Banks, George Best, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (no defenders other than me but don’t reckon we’d need any)Rossington-based then Steve Lodge, Darren Secker, Shaun Breen and Tommy Henderson (may not win as many but we’d have load of laughs!!!)

MEET THE MAIN MENShaun PendletonShaun played the majority of last season at centre back before moving into central midfield where he put in some great displays. Versatile and very professional in his approach, Shaun is a hard worker. His defensive attributes are as impressive as his offensive ones. A very strong passer of the ball, he can play a vital role in playmaking from deeper positions.

John TunneyJohn joins the club from Yorkshire Main after several very successful seasons there. A versatile player who is equally capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield.

Marcel ChipamungaYoung local lad Marcel is making his first steps into senior football this season, hoping to gain experience and develop as a player. Marcel has already shown the management team that he has bags of potential and willingness to learn.

Ben ClarkYoung and enthusiastic with a good attitude to learning the game. wide man Ben is also making his first step into senior football. He is full of pace and positive running which will no doubt cause a problem for defenders.

Nathan FraserAnother very versatile player who is naturally gifted, Nathan loves to attack and run at players and his creativity could prove important . Nathan’s ability to play out wide, down the middle, up front and even at the back makes him a key squad member.

Jonathan MirfinMain’s 2011/12 Supporters’ Player of the Year. Jonathan continues to impress at the Main with consistent displays in the centre of

Danny TaylorDanny joins the club from Askern this season and can play across the midfield and at full back, is very confident in possession and looks after the ball well.

MAIN ISSUE // Official Matchday Magazine of Rossington Main FC 41

STARTING ELEVENTHIS ISSUE’S XI EXPLAINS HOW TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY WORKSBeyond the bright bombastic graphics and the over-excitable presenters there is an exact science to Transfer Deadline Day which generally sticks to these eleven steps.

1. An agent, wanting to create a buzz about one of his players, spins an unfounded rumour to Sky Sports that he is about to join Club X.

2. Sky Sports News report the rumour as news. They ‘understand’ Club X want Player Y. Sky’s website gets some hits.

3. Sky Sports News interview Harry Redknapp through his car window about Player Y. “He’s a top top player,” says Harry.

4. Despite no actual proof Sky Sports continue to ‘understand’ Player Y is off to Club X whilst people keep visiting their website and placing bets on the deal on SkyBet.

5. Sky Sports News reporter stands in car-park of Club X talking about Player Y. A collection of coatless morons stand in the background.

6. Deadline looms. The agent gives a phone interview with impending heart-attack victim Jim White about Player Y. Meanwhile Player Y is at home watching a Band of Brothers box-set.

7. Morons unable to make it to their nearest club car-park instead spark unsubstantiated rumours on social media backing up the non-story created by the agent. “Defo just saw Luis Figo looking at Right Move properties in Wigan on his iPad. LOL :) Pls RT”

8. Deadline Day ends. Player Y hasn’t signed for Club X, he never had any intention of doing so. Agent orders another glass of champagne to celebrate gaining maximum exposure of Player Y with minimal effort.

9. Sky Sports News, their website hits and ratings figures safely increased, move on as if they never reported Player Y was moving to Club X, and so offer no corrections or clarifications.

10. Going forwards Player Y will forever be reported as being ‘linked to’ Club X during the window by Sky Sports News, despite the club never actually pursuing him, much to the delight of the agent whose player is now ‘in demand’.

11. The process is repeated twice a season forever onwards thus helping to increase advertising revenue for Sky Sports’ News channel, website and betting channel in the week up to each Deadline.
