CLUB HISTORYLike many local football clubs, the history of Rossington Main FC has been revised several times in recent years. Originally thought to have been formed in 1926, local knowledge has since revised this date to 1919 when ‘Rossington Colliery’ entered the Sheffield Association League, playing their fixtures on ground at the back of the Colliery offices. A club had competed under the Rossington Colliery name in 1917, but only since 1919 has the club been in continued existence.

The club moved to their current Oxford Street ground in 1921, and just a few years later enjoyed their best ever run in the FA Cup, reaching the 4th Qualifying Round in the 1924-25 season, where they were beaten 3-0 at Lincoln City. The club continued under the name Rossington Colliery for thirty years, enjoying its most successful season at the end of the Second World War when they did the ‘Doncaster Double’, winning both the Doncaster Senior League and Cup in 1944-45. Following the nationalisation of the mines in 1948, the club endured a change of name to Rossington Miners Welfare, and under this moniker they lifted the Doncaster Senior League Premier Division Cup in 1974.

In 1983, now known as Rossington Main, the club became founder members of the Central Midlands League, being promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in their first season. The following year the club took the top flight by storm, winning the Premier Division title and completing the double with the Premier Division Cup. In 1991, following the erection of floodlights and a new Main Stand at Oxford Street which were christened with a friendly against Leeds United that attracted a crowd of around 1,200, the club made the step up to the Northern Counties East League and have remained in Division One ever since. In 1998, after lengthy negotiations, the club merged with near neighbours Rossington FC.

Formed as Station FC in the 1970s (initially changing in a small building at the pub of the same name for games on the adjacent Tornedale field) they had begun life in local Sunday football, but had progressed rapidly, relocating to Rossington Welfare and joining the Central Midlands League in 1986. Here they excelled early on, lifting nine awards in their first two seasons in the league including the Division One title in 1987-88.

Rossington FC continued to grow operating four teams; a Sunday side and an Under 18s team flanking their 1st and 2nd teams in the Central Midlands League. But, despite growth and development on the field the club

were unable to match the expectations of the Central Midlands League financially, and in 1998 they elected to leave the league; facilitating the merger.

Immediately after the merger Main ran both an over 35s and an under 18s team to much success. The over 35s made good progress in the Wragg Sheffield & Hallamshire League finishing Division 2A Champions in 2001 and Division 1A Runners-up the following year. Whilst the under 18s enjoyed continued success in the Doncaster & District Boys League. The club’s reserves, competing in the Doncaster & District League, have also enjoyed much success since the merger. They achieved a League and Cup Double in 2000, have reached the Cup final on three other occasions in the past decade, and finished as League runners-up just last season.

The early years of the 21st century weren’t as kind on the Rossington Main 1st team, but recently the club has enjoyed a revival of fortunes and reasserted itself at the heart of the community. In 2008 much work was done at Oxford Street to bring the club’s home back up to scratch, a job rewarded as the club hosted Doncaster Rovers,in a pre-season friendly.; the gate receipts from which enabled the club to regain a financially sound footing. Further ground improvements have followed each summer, as the club have looked to provide better facilities for players and supporters alike, most notable of which is the new clubhouse which has enabled the club to bring in much needed revenue. The pride in the club’s off the field set-up continued with the club’s programme picking up awards in both 2011 and 2012 whilst edited by Pete Murden.

Off field progress has been matched on the pitch too, with Main reaching the final of the Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 2011. And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed its best ever season in the Northern Counties East League, breaking club goalscoring and points records to finish seventh, despite losing 11 members of the 1st team squad along the way.

Rossington Main now operates two sides on a Saturday. The aims of the club are to provide a unified approach to football in the village so that there is a natural progression in the development of the game. The club strives to sustain competition at the highest possible and affordable level, to continue to provide excellent facilities for both players and spectators, to give opportunity for local players to progress, to reward loyalty and cater for the progression of football in the community of Rossington.

Good evening and welcome to Oxford Street for tonight’s Yorkshire derby with Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

As ever we extend a warm welcome to all connected with The Wells tonight, and hope officials, management and supporters enjoy their visit to Rossington tonight. Of course we welcome their players too, but hopefully they won’t find the night too enjoyable in the main.

Having not had a home game for over a month prior to last Saturday’s fixture with Louth we now have matches coming up thick and fast which is proving a challenge for all concerned, including myself. I recently changed jobs and relocated to London which is making it difficult to get out one programme a week let alone two, but hopefully you will forgive the odd piece of replicated content in coming weeks.

Still, there is hopefully enough contained within this Main Issue to keep you entertained and take your mind off recent results. I’m indebted to Tony Greenhall for letting me share his book review (page 41) and to Ian Wilson for keeping me up to speed on results and events during my Southern exile.

Inside this issue we have plenty for you as usual; we revisit Ian Wilson’s 1919 Q&A interview, which is a fascinating read for both home and visiting supporters, and the issue of ‘goal music’ gets the ‘Football’s Faults’ treatment.

Five years ago today tonight saw Rossington Main travel to Nottinghamshire to take on Gedling Town in front of a less than packed house of just 20 hardy souls on the banks of the River Trent.

Confidence would have been high for Main coming into the game off the back of a home win over Worsborough Bridge the previous weekend, but they fell behind to a John Billups own goal

and never really recovered.

Ten minutes before half-time the home side doubled their advantage as Alan Jeffries tucked a penalty beyond Lee Appleby, and that would prove enough for Gedling to secure a 2-0 win.

Main though would return to winning ways at the weekend as they picked up a 3-2 win away at Borrowash Victoria.

NCEL DIVISION ONECARLTON TOWN 2-1 ROSSINGTON MAIN//2005

Carlton would eventually finish third behind Garforth and Sutton Town, whereas Rossington were looking over their shoulder right until April, finishing just four points above bottom-placed South Normanton Athletic.

Rossington didn;t fair quite as well in Nottinghamshire eight years ago today as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Carlton Town. The two sides were having contrasting seasons in Division One;

1994 // CENTRAL MIDLANDS RESERVE LEAGUE CUPMICKLEOVER SPORTS 0-3 ROSSINGTON FC

With no game for the old Rossington FC 1st team 19 years ago today a larger than normal entourage made their way to Derbyshire for the 2nd team’s Reserve League Cup tie at Mickleover Sports.

The two sides had met just a fortnight earlier in the League with Rossington running out 5-2 winners on the Welfare here, and they would repeat the margin of victory at Sports in this return fixture.

Leighton Lee opened the scoring for Rossington and went on to double his own and Rossington’s tally minutes later to give the visitors a two-goal cushion. The game was put beyond doubt by Lee’s strike partner Andy Troth who found the net himself to secure a 3-0 win.

Sports would finally get their revenge a month to the day as they defeated Rossington 2-0 in the Ken Marsden Trophy.


TODAY’S VISITORS

Hemsworth Miners Welfare Football Club were formed in July 1981 out of the disbanded Hemsworth Colliery Football Club which folded in 1979, the newly formed Club had to play their early football in Leagues such as the Bentley League the Barnsley Nelson League before eventually being accepted into the Doncaster and District Senior League from where the Club flourished. After a couple of poor seasons in the Doncaster Senior League the team went on to win three successive promotions without actually winning the title. Following four top-six finishes in the Doncaster Premier Division the Club won its first Honours when they beat Kinsley Boys 2-0 in the Premier Division Cup final at Askern in 1995, with both goals scored by Jimmy Slaughter.

The following season the Club were accepted into the West Riding County Amateur Football League where they took their place in Division One under the Management of Andy Cracknell who had took over from Billy Clark. The first season in the WRCAFL Division 1 saw the Club miss out on promotion on goal difference but the following season they made no mistake and won the Championship and League Cup double joining the elite in the Premier Division at step 7 for the very first time in the club’s history.

The Club also won the Doncaster Challenge Cup and the Sheffield Junior Cup during the late 1990s, although never winning the WRCAFL Premier Division title the Club were

A WARM WELCOME TO HEMSWORTH MINERS WELFAREhigher challenge, notably the NCEL, but things were a long way off going into the new millennium.

A breakthrough came when the Club received two Football Foundation grants for a new state of the art clubhouse and for floodlights enabling the push for step 6 football to begin. Paul Crapper had now taken over as First Team Manager and led the team into the NCEL in 2008-09 season after being accepted following ground improvements. Paul however found it difficult, through work commitments, to give the First Team Manager job the full attention it deserved and handed the role back to Andy Cracknell who led the team to a 10th place finish in its first season then seventh place in the second season. The third NCEL season 2010-11 was a bit of a disaster but the campaign will be remembered for the Club’s debut in the F.A. Cup after the first taste of F.A. Vase the previous season.

2011-2012 saw us finish a very creditable 8th place and reach the quarter final of the Sheffield Cup; a great achievement for such a small club with hardly any resources and huge credit went to Wayne Benn and his management team. Unfortunately in April 2012, Hemsworth were saddened at the tragic death of club secretary Mark Crapper. Mark was well known in the non-league pyramid and the local community and football teams. He put the club on the map and without his hardwork and determination the club would not be where we are today.


HEMSWORTH M.W.RYAN PLEASANTS (Forward) Ryan has been a revelation since joining from Wakefield FC. Ryan certainly knows where the net is. Unfortunatley he sustained a serious knee injury in 2011, and his currently on the road to recovery.

MATTY STOR (Defender)Matty has joined the club from Ossett Town and has settled in at right back, Matty is getting better game by game as he learns his trade he can go and develop into a very good player at this level and above.

ANDREW HART (Defender) Another player recovering from cruciate injury, Andy has a wealth of experience at this level having spend several seasons at Selby Town a number of those a Captain Andy will strengthen the defensive line.

IWAN HEELEY (Forward)Iwan recently signed for the Club from Bradford Park Avenue having previously having spells at Ossett Town and Golcar United. Can play upfront or out wide.

NEAL MAY (Goalkeeper). Neal was most recently signed from Premier Division team Armthorpe Welfare. Neal possess a good safe pair of hands, and his tall presence sees him command his box both along the floor and in the air.

GLYN WRIGHT (Midfield/Forward) Glyn is the third summer signing from South Kirkby Colliery and offers the team natural width, Glyn can also chip in with plenty of goals.

VINNY DAWSON (Midfield) Vinny is the vein that runs through the Club his attitude and commitment are second to none and he sets a perfect example to every player, Vinny can play central or out wide and has an eye for a goal.

JACK WAKEFIELD (Midfield)Jack is another new signing from South Kirkby Colliery and offers quality and strength in the centre of the park he will be a tremendous addition to the squad for this season.

DARREN BARRICK (Forward) Daz rejoined the club for a third spell around three months ago. Daz is a big bustly centre forward who possess great height and strength to help at both ends of the football field. Hampered by work commitments Daz still puts in lots of hardwork when crossing that white line.

NEIL TOWLER (Forward) Neil has joined us this season from Hall Road Rangers Tick is a very good experienced player who has played at many clubs high than North East Counties.

DALE WALSTOW(Goalkeeper)Dale has now fully established himself as the Clubs No 1 Keeper, his strengths are shot stopping and strength, he was voted player of the season for last term.

ROSS HAYWOOD (Defender)Ross is now in his fourth season at Hemsworth joining from Eccleshill United having had spells at Frickley Athletic and Winterton Rangers, a natural left footed defender who can switch to centre half or midfield.

DEAN FOLEY (Defender) Deano is currently Club Captain and is one of the best centre halfs in the League on his day, Dean is a natural leader who commands in the air, Dean is also comfortable on the floor with both feet.

WILL KEMP (Midfield) Will has joined are club from local rivals Kinsley he is a very good player who plays on the left wing also can play up front a very capable player.

SAM VARLEY (Defender) Sam joined us this season, having previously held spells at Nostell MW. Sam is a young defender with two good feet, strong In the tackle and playing regular football will only benefit his footballing career

PHILIP LINDLEY (Def/Midfield) Phil has only just recently joined the club but possess bags of experience at both NCEL level and Evo Stick. Previously played at Ossett Town and Frickley Athletic Phil was hampered by work commitments, but when available will add strength to the starting eleven. Phil is a good reader of the game, strong in the air and can provide that decisive ball.

JON IMPEY (Midfield/Defender) Jon is a perfect squad player plays nearly every game and will play in any role required for the team, finished last season as second highest goalscorer.

ROBBIE CRAPPER (Midfield) Robbie is another player who is still only 19 and been with the Club since he was a Junior Robbie could have a big part to play this season.

JAKE WHITE (Midfield)Jake joined us from Frickley Colliery this season Jake is a very capable player and could play at an higher level.

CAMERON CLARK (Def/Mid) Cameron is a member of our Under 19s team, who most recently broke into the first team. Cameron can play anywhere on the left hand side. Cameron has the speed to break forward and cause problems for opposing teams, and also has a good left foot. One for the wells future.

LEAGUE NEWS

Current sponsors of the Northern Counties East League Baris have announced that they will not be renewing their deal come the end of the current season.

The company have been sponsors of the League since 2011, securing two successive annual deals as title sponsors of the competition.

The NCEL will retain the Baris name until this summer’s AGM, and in the mean time will be seeking alternate sponsors for 2013-14 and onwards.

The company have also chosen not to renew their sponsorship of Premier Division side Staveley Miners Welfare beyond the current campaign.

MARSHALL TAKES OVER AS CLIPSTONE CHAIRMANFormer Retford United manager Brett Marshall has taken over as club chairman at Clipstone Welfare,

Marshall who guided Retford to the Premier Division title last season and has since been in charge at Hucknall Town will now focus on off the field matters in his new role with the Cobras.

“After ten years in football management, I have decided to take on a new challenge,” Marshall was quoted as saying on the Clipstone Welfare website.

Marshall continued; “My desire to go back into management is not there at

this time but I knew, if something off the field came up and it ticked all the boxes along with being a different type of challenge, then it would be worth consideration.

“Speaking to [manager and friend] Lee Tryner as I do, his ambition for the football club mirrors my ambition for the last decade to progress but to do things the correct way by getting players to come to the club for the right reasons and get players to play for him.

“Off the field, the football club has a strong hard-working committee but were looking for new blood to kick the club on now they are in the NCEL.”

FIXTURE ALTERATION NEWSOur away match with Eccleshill United which was postponed last Tuesday night for a second time has now been rearranged for Wednesday

6th March. We are however still awaiting confirmation on the date for our Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup Quarter Final tie with Stavelely MW.


MAIN IN ACTION

Following three consecutive postponements the Main returned to Oxford Street for their first home fixture in almost 2 months, with the December and January match schedule drastically hit by the weather. A big change for Manager Steve Lodge in that only Richard Spears was unavailable, and there were FOUR on the bench (as opposed to no-one at Knaresborough in our previous game following Spears’ injury) Rossington were out to avenge a 1-0 defeat at Louth back in late August, but once again it was a penalty decision that decided the outcome of the game. In fact the return match was a tale of THREE penalties!

The 1st half lacked sparkle and was contested mostly in midfield, defences were rarely breached and on the odd occasion strikers got a sight of goal their finishing was woeful resulting in neither keeper being seriously tested. When Billam was adjudged to have impeded their striker as he bore down on Copley, the linesman awarded a penalty which Louth midfielder Goodhand coolly slotted home on the stroke of half-time. Although Brad was very much the last man, he was not even cautioned by the referee for the offence, when possibly the “foul” should have been a red card!

There was a bit more purpose and energy to the game after the interval and both sides seemed to step up a gear and the game opened up. However Louth contested every ball and their defence held firm. The game looked over when another Billam foul (this one far more clear-cut) resulted in a 2nd penalty in the final quarter of the match. For some unknown reason the visitors changed their penalty-taker and Copley made an excellent save. This heartened the home side and the introduction of 3 strikers from the bench signalled the manager’s intentions but we were unable to find a way though a workmanlike defence. Our only hope appeared to be from a trip on Thornton as he won the ball following a block by the Louth keeper, but this time neither the same linesman nor referee was of the same opinion as the majority of spectators present. In the end another disappointing result at home but we were perhaps worthy of a share of the points.

MAIN IN ACTION

Another disappointing afternoon on the road for the Main as late withdrawls from Nathan Cook (illness), Dave Holvey and Liam Copley (both family related) meant a depleted squad of just twelve players made the trip south to Teversal; a factor which would eventually prove telling.

The heavy pitch caused both sides issues, but it was the home side who eventually settled to take control of proceedings. Goal scoring opportunities were rare though and it took until the 9th minute before the first telling effort, which went the way of the home side. Dave Cockerill came up against Brad Billam before back-heeling to Will Harcourt to unleash a powerful effort that forced Jordan Wildey into a quality full length dive to his left to save.

Rossington did manage some forays forward with Billam being the main architect down the left flank, but they came up against a resolute Teversal defence that would work hard throughout the afternoon to record their third clean sheet on the bounce.

The home side took the lead on 32 minutes when Greg Tobin’s well weighted pass put Kye Pilmore through on goal and the Teversal marksman left Wildey with no

chance as he tucked home the opener. Main managed to create a few opportunities of their own as we sought to get back into the game, the best chance coming on 38 minutes when Teversal looked like breaking from a corner. But Billam broke up the move and hit a delightful cross field ball to Nathan Fraser who did superb to control the ball and cut to unleash a fierce effort that unfortunately hit Brandon Fallon before the home side scrambled the ball clear.

With five minutes remaining of the first period Teversal doubled their advantage following a neat passing move started by Jamie Goodacre who found Pilmore who in turn fed Rob Orton who cleverly ran at the heart of the Rossington defence before playing a return ball to Pilmore for him to calmly pass the ball past the stranded Wildey for 2-0.

Main did manage to carve out another opportunity before the break when Billam again did superb down the left flank before crossing to Fallon who simply could not get a shot away due to the defensive numbers crowding out the strikers effort.

...Teversal left flank combining with Eli Mitchell to make space for a driven low cross that found Harcourt who was denied by an excellent save by Wildey. However the forward reacted quickest to the rebound and managed to lay the ball to the unmarked Dave Cockerill who tapped the ball into the empty goal to make it 3-0 on 69 minutes.

It wasn’t until, the final six minutes, as Teversal brought on fresh legs, that the home side were able to cement the victory with a final flourish. Dave Cockerill went close as he played a short corner with Tobin and then cut in to fire a low effort that Wildey saved well at the foot of his near post. However the resulting corner lead to the 4th goal, when Dave Cockerill this time sent the ball to the far post where Goodacre eas on hand to volley home with five minutes still to play.

With two minutes to go late substitute Robbie Collins came on to have a decisive hand in the fifth and final goal. Collins ran at goal only to be denied by Wildey, but from the ricochet Collins was able to pick out Mitchell who fired home on his last appearance for the home side.

A bad day at the office which means that Main have shipped ten goals to Teversal in the two meetings this season. Hopefully though they can dust themselves off and get things back on track by matching the scoreline of the earlier season meeting with tonight’s guests Hemsworth who we defeated 4-3 back in August.

The 2nd team suffered their first Cup defeat of the season against Div.1 high-fliers Hemsworth M.W. in an entertaining encounter at Oxford Street, the pitch just drying out following a midweek flood when a stand-pipe was broken. The 1st half belonged very much to the home side and they led 2-0 following errors in the Hemsworth defence, the first the result of an own goal and then Coburn chipped into an empty net from 25 yards as keeper and defender collided on the edge of the 18 yard box. A change in fortunes appeared a possibility when the visitors pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time.

The real turning point came 5 minutes after the interval when keeper Lodge was dismissed for verbal abuse to the linesman who had clearly missed an offside decision in the lead-up to Hemsworth’s equalising goal. Reduced to 10 men we were always going to struggle against a determined Hemsworth MW side

who were now in very confident mood and looked far sharper in attack. Stand-in keeper Coburn had no chance with an excellent 3rd goal by the visitors and as we pushed forward in search of some consolation, we were often left exposed at the back and Hemsworth scored 2 late goals to clinch a victory which had looked very unlikely after 40 minutes of play. The sending-off incident had proved a significant factor in this Cup tie.

FOOTBALL’S FAULTS CONTINUING MAIN ISSUE’S LOOK AT FOOTBALL’S UGLY SIDE

NO. 9. GOAL MUSICOr as this topic should perhaps be known; ‘When Good Songs Go Bad’. Because, let’s face it, on its own, apropos of nothing Tom Hark by The Piranhas is a pretty good tune. So to is Song II by Blur, As is Glad All Over by The Dave Clark Five. But, thanks to their respective status as the ‘Goal Music’ of choice at a whole host of football clubs, they have now been unfortunately re-shelved in the ‘bloody dirge’ aisle.

What is Goal Music anyway? Well, I’ll tell you. Goal Music is someone at the professional club you support sitting in a meeting one day and going; “Hey, is it just me, or is that natural roaring cheering sound that supporters do when we score a goal not really conveying the feeling of scoring properly? Could we perhaps not drown it out with some mid 90s Indie Rock?” More depressingly of course, is the fact that other people in the room will have listened to that guy.

Goal Music is ultimately your club not trusting you to create an appropriate atmosphere in reaction to your team scoring a goal, so they have felt compelled to help you reach the approved levels of excitement with the aid of pre-recorded clapping, and/or, overpowering punk-ska sax solos.

But here’s the thing with Goal Music, in that it was only ever really

conceived with the feel good notion of winning goals or equalisers in mind. For example, how ‘Glad All Over’ will Bolton fans be exactly as David Ngog shins home a Kevin Davies flick-on for a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat? Similarly, such is the natural cynicism in Damon Albarn’s tone, that it becomes very easy for his opening “Wooohoo!”s to take on a distinct air of sarcasm after your a pointless late goal has cannoned in off your midfielder’s arse.

For me, the easy way to envisage just how pointless Goal Music is, is to imagine some of the all-time great goals, the biggest lung-bursting, eye-popping celebrations and drown them out with pop fodder of the time. So as Paul Gascoigne lies flat on his back on the Wembley turf after turning Colin Hendry every which way, water being squirted into his face by his team-mates, imagine that seen with Wake Up Boo by the Boo Radleys bursting out over the tannoy.

Or the 1982 World Cup Final and Marco Tardelli’s winner for Italy. And as the forward wheels away across the field, head shaking, screaming “Gol!” at everyone and no-one, think how much that moment could have been improved with a crackling “Agadoo do do!” blaring into the Spanish night sky. Kind of kills the moment don’t you think?

MEET THE MAIN MENSteve Lodge (Manager)Steve took over the reigns for the end of the 2010/11 season, leading the club to the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Last season, Steve’s first full season in charge, was also successful as the first team broke a number of club records to achieve their best NCEL finish. A firm believer in club spirit, which is why most players and officials at the club are local.

Ian Wilson (Assistant Manager)A former Wales youth and amateur international Ian also does an excellent job as club groundsman amongst other roles. Previously in charge of Rossington FC, he took that club from local Sunday football to the top flight of the Central Midlands League

Lee ApplebyNow in his 7th season at the Main, making him one of the top appearance makers in recent years Lee was instrumental in our record breaking season last year with some outstanding performances and 12 clean sheets. Dedicated, honest and hardworking as well as agile, quick and boasting superb handling Lee is one of the best keepers the NCEL has to offer.

Jordan WildeyYoung Jordan will provide competition for the number one shirt this year after some impressive displays in tough games for both 1st and 2nd teams last season where he performed maturely and competently. He is a fantastic shot stopper, agile and very confident.

Bradley BillamFlying full back Brad continues to grow at left back; combining athleticism, confidence and consistency with a willingness to work forwards and backwards to become a valuable member of the Main squad. His attacking prowess was clear to see last year as he was credited with 8 assists.

Dan ElcoatPrimarily a central defender, Dan can play anywhere across the back four and also in

central midfield. He is strong in the air and tenacious in the tackle, boasting good communication skills and a strong desire to play.

Chris HansonChris joined the Main late last season from Yorkshire Main, playing a versatile role in the Rossington defence. Chris is calm in possession and is a good reader of the game.

Tom HarteVery good on the ball and well organised Tom came back to football last year after some time away from the game. He played with the Reserves last season but has shown during pre-season that he is capable of becoming a 1st team player.

David Holvey2011/12 Manager’s Player of the Year; Club Captain Dave lead by example last year and his never say die attitude and loyalty to the club make him an invaluable asset. A great leader and robust defender Dave is also capable of pin-point long range passes that turn defence quickly into attack.

Dean JonesDean can play in any position across the back four, as he has done for the Reserves. Another player to return to the game after some time away, Dean is a good footballer and very good in the air.

Will Rowley2011/12 Reserves Players’ Player of the Year. Long-time Main man Will is an old school central defender who provided some excellent displays last season. Solid in the air, well-timed in the tackle and a threat at set pieces he is reliable and extremely valuable for both sides.

Richard SpearsVery hard working, committed and energetic, Richard played an important role in the club’s strong 2011/12 campaign. Richard will no doubt look to continue working hard to cement his place in the team.

Q1. When was your debut for Rossington Main & who was it against?A1. Probably 1971, when I began teaching in Rossington, with Paul Perry as manager. Away at Thurnscoe in Don. Sen. Lge. We won 8-2 and travelled there in a Rossie Motors double decker bus, but had to walk the last half-mile as we encountered a low railway bridge. Q2. First footballing memory?A2. Junior School football on a Friday afternoon against other junior schools in North Wales.

Q3. First team you played for?A3. Borough United Youth (aged 15) and Penmaenmawr F.C. in North Wales Coast League (aged 16).

Q4. Which team do you support?A4. Always a Manchester United fan. Also Wrexham because they were the nearest League Club to home.

Q5. Which footballer was your boyhood hero?A5. Definitely Sir Bobby Charlton, the complete footballer.

Q6. Who do you consider the greatest player in your position? A6. I’ve played in almost every position from goakeeper to outside left but possibly best remembered in Rossington as a sweeper or midfield player in which case Beckenbauer and Zidane respectively.

Q7. What was the first professional game you ever went to watch?A7. It would have been a Liverpool game as an aunt lived in Anfield and I used to go there on holiday as a teenager (wished now I had relatives in Barcelona) If I was away in August I could usually get two games in less than a week with Everton just across Stanley Park.

Q8. If you could travel in time to attend any match ever which would you choose?A8. European Cup Final in 1960 I think, Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt, Real won 7-3.

Q9. What is your favourite ever football kit? A9. Liked the Station Hotel kit of early 80s. White v-neck with navy trim, navy shorts and socks. Umbro, simple but classy.

Q10. What make of boots do you prefer to wear? A10. Used to be Adidas but once borrowed a pair of Puma Kings fom a College mate and couldn’t believe how light they were.

Q14. What is your proudest achievement in football so far?A14. Playing for Welsh Amateur side at Wrexham, winning Junior Cup at Wombwell as player-manager for Station Hotel F.C. and then winning Central Midlands title with Station F.C. as manager losing just one League match all season (and that the last one at Kilburn M.W.).

Q15. What has been your favorite moment playing for Rossington Main? A15. Favourite moment PLAYING for Rossington Main was a diving header fom 15 yards at Oxford St. vs Edlington which also won game 1-0. Cannot remember the year (1970s) but do remember I rarely scored with my head.

Q16. Sum what Rossington Main means to you in 5 words or less. A16. Supporting Community, improving standards.

Q17. Who is the best player you have ever played alongside?A17. Dai Davies (ex-Wales keeper) and Gareth Edwards (ex-Wales scrum half) whilst at College in Cardiff. Gareth wasn’t a footballer really but played occasionally when not on International Rugby preparation and training.

Q18. Who is the best player you have ever played against? A18. Most famous must be Mel Charles (brother of John) when I was 17 and he was ending his career at Portmadoc F.C. The one person who gave me a run-around was a winger called Dai Whitney when I was playing left-back for Welsh Colleges v. Welsh Amateurs. He was going past me all the time and delivering great crosses. My mate Pat was playing left-half and he was an ex-Cardiff City pro who had come to College late in his career. He said “show him inside next time Wilson and I’ll hit him” I never have been an advocate of foul play but true to Pat’s word I forced him inside on the next attack. He left me for dead, skipped inside Pat and hit a 25 yarder with his left foot into the top corner. Pat and I just smiled.... Q19. Lastly, which other players would make up your dream 5-a-side team?A19. Nationally/internationally; Gordon Banks, George Best, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (no defenders other than me but don’t reckon we’d need any)Rossington-based then Steve Lodge, Darren Secker, Shaun Breen and Tommy Henderson (may not win as many but we’d have load of laughs!!!)


MEET THE MAIN MENShaun PendletonShaun played the majority of last season at centre back before moving into central midfield where he put in some great displays. Versatile and very professional in his approach, Shaun is a hard worker. His defensive attributes are as impressive as his offensive ones. A very strong passer of the ball, he can play a vital role in playmaking from deeper positions.

John TunneyJohn joins the club from Yorkshire Main after several very successful seasons there. A versatile player who is equally capable of playing anywhere in defence or midfield.

Marcel ChipamungaYoung local lad Marcel is making his first steps into senior football this season, hoping to gain experience and develop as a player. Marcel has already shown the management team that he has bags of potential and willingness to learn.

Ben ClarkYoung and enthusiastic with a good attitude to learning the game. wide man Ben is also making his first step into senior football. He is full of pace and positive running which will no doubt cause a problem for defenders.

Niall DoyleAs the Reserve team captain Niall has become an important part of the club, helping the Reserves to a close title race last season. Niall likes to keep the ball moving and push forward into goal scoring positions whenever possible.

Nathan FraserAnother very versatile player who is naturally gifted, Nathan loves to attack and run at players and his creativity could prove important . Nathan’s ability to play out wide, down the middle, up front and even at the back makes him a key squad member.

Jonathan MirfinMain’s 2011/12 Supporters’ Player of the Year. Jonathan continues to impress at the Main with consistent displays in the centre of

midfield. Jonathan rarely gives the ball away, starting attacks and creating chances for his team mates. The controlled midfielder is also useful from free-kicks.

Danny TaylorDanny joins the club from Askern this season and can play across the midfield and at full back, is very confident in possession and looks after the ball well.

Brandon FallonBrandon burst into the Main squad in March. Tall, powerful and very quick and for such a young lad he fits in very well at this level. After only seven appearances last season, we are waiting to see even more of Brandon this year.

Tom McLaughlinPace, dribbling and finishing are just three attributes that make Tom a very dangerous opponent for defenders. He can play up front or on either wing. Tom joins after several seasons with Askern Villa and will be looking to cement a starting role at the Main this term.

Scott MaughanThe club’s overall top scorer last season.as he make his return to football after some time away from the game. It proved very successful as he fired the Reserves into a title chasing spot. Scott is a natural finisher who comes alive around the penalty area.

Dean ThorntonA former regular scorer for the Reserves, Dean has returned to force his way into the 1st team. Dean is excellent with his back to goal and good in the air, but equally as effective running past the back four. A natural finisher and confident in front of goal.

Adam WisdomAdam is blessed with pace and power and his physical attributes and appetite to work make him a handful for opponents. A threat running beyond defenders, but really comes alive from close range, where he scored all of his goals last season.

Each of the sixty-six grounds has its own tale to tell’ teams good and bad, stands ramshackle and magnificent,

Moments such as walking from Scarborough to Bridlington, being chased across fields by a ferocious dog here in Rossington and losing a child at Northallerton Town show MJ Mowbray’s talents as a storyteller. This book is far from a dry travelogue, but a joyous celebration of all that is good about the beautiful game. Along with a collection of excellent photographs and a foreword by ex-Yorkshire and England Cricket captain Michael Vaughan, Route 66 is a must read for fans of football at all levels, tales of strange lands or obsessions satisfied against adversity.
