Message from Principal Bernadette Smith
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are now entering into the last month of the 2015/2016 school year. It never ceases to astonish me how quickly time goes by and how much we accomplish as a school community during our time together.
We have so much to celebrate as we reflect on the past year. As you know, our school converted back to one that serves Kindergarten to grade 3 students. We bid farewell to our grade 4s for the last time last year as they joined our sister school Roselawn PS. Fortunately, we continue to form various partnerships with Roselawn including through different school wide events and our PRO (Parents Reaching Out) initiative.
We have embraced several initiatives to enhance the schooling experience including the Digital Citizenship Conference, What’s Your Magic? Day, Chick Hatching and our school musical. We also continued to extended our Arts package, supported through our school council, to include drumming, author visits, GROW, Saidat, and Jungle Sport.
Please join us at the upcoming school events highlighted in the calendar attached. We look forward to showcasing our student work and joining in the celebrations with you.
Message from our Trustee Carol Chan As the school year comes to a close, I would like to thank you for all that you have done to help make this school year a successful one for our students. We share a common goal - to give our young people every opportunity to reach their full potential, and we all have a role to play in supporting that goal. However you choose to get involved, your engagement and support make a difference. We know that good schools become better schools when they are connected with families. Thanks to the ongoing efforts of our students, families, staff members and community partners, we are creating a welcoming, caring and inclusive learning environment that fosters student achievement and well-being. As we move into summer, I encourage you to seek out opportunities to continue and complement the learning that takes place throughout the school year. That could mean taking a nature walk, visiting a museum or reading a book. Whatever your plans are over the next few months, I hope you have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable summer.

PLANNING ON MOVING?
Each year at this time we begin to plan our staffing and classes for the upcoming school year.
It is important for us to know how many students to expect for September at Ross Doan.
If your children (grades JK to Gr. 2) will not be returning to our school in the fall, please inform us at the office as soon as possible. Thank you.
Last Day of School - Wednesday, June 29, 2016
Wednesday, June 29th is the last day of school. This will be an early release day.Classes will run from 9:00 - 12:00. Dismissal will be at 12:00. Bussing will be provided in the morning and at 12:00. There will be no school for students in the afternoon of June 29. Parents are reminded to please make alternate arrangements for their children on that afternoon.
A BIG thank you goes out to all of the students who participated in JumpRope for Heart on Tuesday May 31st! The weather was beautiful and the event was a huge success, with Petros Konteas winning the
coveted JRFH soccer ball for being the skipper with the greatest stamina! An honourable mention goes out to Baran Askari who also amazed us with her long lasting jump rope skills. Great job everyone!
The final numbers are not yet in, but we know that this year’s fundraising efforts were fantastic and as always, very much appreciated by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. All prizes earned will be delivered to RDPS before the end of the school year and distributed by Mrs. Sarra to the students.

Rio Ross Doan Play Day 2016
This summer, the Olympics will be held in Rio, de Janeiro, Brazil. So, in honour of the Olympics, we will have our very own, Rio Ross Doan Play Day here at Ross Doan Public School. This year’s Play Day will be held on:Tuesday, June 21st (Rain date: Friday, June 24th) for students in grades 1 to 3.Play Day is a time for planned outdoor games and activities; some events involve water, so your child MAY get a little WET! Everyone will get FREEZIES, too! It will be held in the morning from approximately 9:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. with a break at recess, indoors, from the heat. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately (e.g., a hat, running shoes, T-shirt, shorts, sunscreen) on that day.Play Day Committee
There are many ways you can support your child’s learning to help them prepare for the next school year. Over the summer months, your students will still have active accounts to both Raz-Kids and IXL. Encourage your child to spend some time reading levelled books and completing the accompanying comprehension quizzes on Raz-Kids. Take a look at the IXL page for the grade your child will be in next year and try out some of the activities together, or use their current grade page for extra practice.
Encourage journalling or story writing. Students can take photos of places they see or things they are doing during their vacation. Insert the pictures into an app like Pic Collage, Book Creator, Educreations and Tellagami and then write or do a voice recording to capture the memories.

WHAT’S YOUR MAGIC? DAYWe are looking forward to another special 'What's Your Magic Day?' here at Ross Doan on Friday, June 10th. As we prepare for this fun event, students have been learning about about the Multiple Intelligences theory. They’ve learned about how each person is special and has their own way of being smart or their 'MAGIC'. Teachers and students have worked to find their own 'magic' through different activities in class, and we’ve been able to gain insight into our own strengths and interests.
On ‘What’s Your Magic Day?’, we will come together to celebrate all of the different ‘Smarts’ of our school community. Students have chosen two different activities that will give them an opportunity to explore and experience what they are passionate about. These special activities will include soccer, cooking, a nature walk, cheer leading, reader’s theatre, and karaoke. In the afternoon we will celebrate all together, and share and reflect on this fantastic day. We’re very excited for our 3rd annual ‘What’s Your Magic Day?’, and can’t wait to enjoy the day all together!
