CBGA Newsletter 1 Spring 2017 Dean’s Dash Dr. Ross Dickens, Dean College of Business and Global Affairs Much of this edition focuses on the award-winning students and faculty from the CBGA Honors Banquet in April. We are proud of them all but point out the large number of our students who won university-level awards (such as Miranda Rutan’s winning the 2016 Beth Moloan Outstanding Student Employee Award). The emphasis on experiential learning continues to show from the INFS 330 students who helped craft this newsletter, to students’ participation in conferences (National Model Conference, Southern Regional Model U.N., Tennessee Bankers Credit Conference, and FMA Student Leaders Conference), and the MKT 377 students who planned and hosted the April Honors Banquet. We have been strong in those areas for years, but we are working toward improving another area of experiential learning: internships. John Clark in his role as the Director of the Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking Office is making quick headway to increase the number of students with internships with local banks. The REED Center has recruited a new volunteer, Michelle Dickens (full disclosure—my wife) to help provide a more consistent contact for students and employers. Finally, the University has expanded its Career Planning and Development Office and it is showing excellent progress. Putting these efforts together is creating a much more seamless and consistent process to match students and employers. I offer a quick “thank you” to all who donated in the recent Captain’s Challenge. Your gifts will bring the full match to the College and our plan is to use non-designated funds to refurbish the students’ study area on the bottom floor of the CBGA building and bring it a bit forward in time from what has been described as “1970’s chic.” As always, I ask you to send us your news and, most importantly, prospective students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We have excellent students who want to be your excellent interns and job holders. Contact us and we will help you find another hidden gem. UT MARTIN Student Trustee Honored with Fall 2016 Beth Maloan Outstanding Student Employee Award

AWARD WINNER – Miranda Rutan (second from right), is pictured with Beth Maloan family members (from left) Mike Maloan and Colin, Kate and Jennifer Stroh Miranda Rutan, of Spring Hill, received the fall 2016 Beth Maloan Outstanding Student Employee Award during an awards presentation fall 2016. The award is named for the Beth Maloan, longtime UT Martin director of budgeting and payroll, who was a strong advocate of student employment. It recognizes exemplary work ethic and commitment to the university.

Rutan has served as UT’s student voice on the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees and also recently served as a member of the UT Martin chancellor search committee. In addition to these roles, Rutan is also finishing a bachelor’s degree with double majors in marketing and graphic design, which she is scheduled to receive in spring 2017. CBGA Delegation Thrives at National Model Congress National Model Congress was a success for the UTM delegation as they brought home the highest honor given at the conference, the “Outstanding Delegation” award.

Individual awards were earned as well, listed from left to right in the picture below: John Hayes, Sophomore Political Science Major, Outstanding Representative; Drew Cagle, Senior Political Science Major, Distinguished Senator; Anderson Starling, Assistant Professor of Political Science; Marcus Vancleave, Senior Political Science Major, Honorable Representative; Erica Little, Sophomore Political Science Major Erica Little and Marcus Vancleave sponsored bills that were passed by both houses and signed by the president during the simulation. These were two of only three bills to be completed in the process during the conference. Experiential Learning Opportunity for Political Science and International Studies’ Students Two political science majors and two international studies majors, Alex Doyle, Adrian De Sagon, Kayla Donohoe, and Antoinette Schlotter, attended the Southern Regional Model UN. Along with delegates from over 40 other colleges and universities, the CBGA students represented their country of Malaysia in four UN committees, which each discussed different topics related to the theme of “Assessing the Challenges and Opportunities of Globalism in the 21st Century." During three days and through a mix of moderated and un-moderated caucuses and meetings, students gave and listened to speeches, wrote and sponsored or signed working papers, persuaded other countries to support their working papers, and voted on draft resolutions.

CBGA Newsletter 6 Spring 2017

Alex Doyle, the representative on the Security Council, was recognized with a Committee award as the “Most Outspoken” delegate. Moreover, all students submitted position papers in advance of the conference, which were scored by the executive committee and staff. Two of the CBGA students’ papers scored extremely well—98 and 93 out of 100—which were among the highest writing scores at the event.

Pictured (l–r) Alex Doyle, Adrian De Sagon, Kayla Donohoe, and Antoinette Schlotter Alex Brown Named February CBGA Student of the Month

Alex Brown was chosen as the February CBGA Student of the Month by management faculty in the college. Brown is a former student athlete at UTM studying business admin. with a major in management. After his graduation in May 2017, he will either further his education by attending graduate school or return home to Middle Tennessee to work.

Brown reminisces that when he began attending school at The University of Tennessee at Martin, he did not know what to expect, but he discovered that he has had many different opportunities to practice analytical decision making, experiential

learning, career development, and best of all, networking. “My time at UTM has been a humbling experience but the best part about it is not the degree. It is all the great people you get to meet along the way. As I begin my final semester at UTM, I am confident the knowledge that I have acquired over the past years will help pave the way for my future. I am extremely thankful for my time here at UTM but most importantly, I am thankful for all of the selfless professors who make it all possible.” Miranda Rutan Named April CBGA Student of the Month

Miranda Rutan was named the April CBGA Student of the Month by marketing faculty in the college. Rutan is completing her fifth year here at UT Martin and currently working towards two degrees: a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Marketing and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. She

will be graduating with both these degrees in May 2017.

Rutan has interned for the Office of Student Life at UT Martin for the last two years as the Assistant to the Office of Student Life. This opportunity gave her an opportunity to utilize graphic design and marketing skills in addition to heightening her passion for higher education. As a result of her work in Student Life, Rutan is scheduled to enter a graduate program in higher education or public policy in the next year.

Rutan concludes, “Immediately after graduation, I will move back to Middle Tennessee for the summer to look for a job in Knoxville, where I will be moving to in August. I have many options for jobs with the two degrees, but I hope to find one related to higher education or non-profit work.”
