    ROYAL OVER-SEAS LEAGUE

  • REPERTOIRE

    Candidates should present a varied, imaginative and well balanced programme predominantly of Western classical music.

    Candidates must present at least one work composed before 1830. In Stage 2 candidates must present one work composed after 1970.

    Arrangements of works originally written for other instruments are acceptable. All vocal works should be sung in their original language. Extracts from opera and oratorio should be sung in the original key. A two manual harpsichord can be made available for period instrumentalists and ensembles.

    Choice of repertoire, presentation and stage deportment plays an important part of the assessment of candidates at each stage of the competition.

    Soloists/Ensembles

    Stage 1 (Preliminary auditions) 10 minutes free choice.

    Stage 2 (Quarter-Finals) 15 minutes contrasting programme with Stage 1 which must include a work composed since 1970.

    Stage 3 (Semi-Finals) 20 minutes free choice. A mini-recital which may include one work presented in either of the earlier rounds. Open to the public.

    Stage 4 (Final) 15 minutes free choice. The winners of the main solo awards (Keyboard, Strings, Wind/Percussion, Singers) compete for the Competition Gold Medal and First Prize.

    The winners of the two Ensemble awards perform while the jury deliberates. Open to the public.

    Overseas Awards

    Final, 10 minutes free choice. For outstanding non-UK Commonwealth competitors. Open to the public.

    The timings given above are performance times and should include settling, tuning, rests between pieces etc.

    ELIGIBILITY & RULES

    Eligibility

    The 2016 competition is open to citizens of the UK and Commonwealth, including former Commonwealth countries, for instrumentalists and singers up to and including the age of 30 as at 1 June 2016. Deadline for applications: Friday 15 January 2016.

    Ensembles

    There are two ensemble categories A: Strings, Piano and Strings, Piano duo/duet B: Wind, Percussion, Vocal, Mixed Ensembles

    Accompanists

    Accompanists are not provided, but can be recommended. Accompanists may be of any age or nationality; however only those who are citizens of the UK and Commonwealth, including former Commonwealth countries up to and including the age of 30 as at 1 June 2016, will be considered for the accompanists prize.

    Competition Rules

    ROSL ARTS decision to accept or refuse any entry is final. The decision of the Adjudicating Panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The Adjudicators reserve the right to withhold any prize should the required standard not be attained.

    Once a competitor has won a prize in the Annual Music Competition, they are not eligible for that prize in a subsequent year. Previous winners of the main solo awards are not eligible to enter the Annual Music Competition as soloists again.

    ROSL reserves the right to allow any stage of the Annual Music Competition to be recorded, broadcast or televised.

    Candidates must be available for all relevant audition dates, including Overseas Awards evening on 15 March 2016 for non-UK Commonwealth competitors and the Final Concert at the Cadogan Hall on 1 June 2016.

    Once a candidate has been accepted by the Annual Music Competition, no alteration to the submitted programme will be accepted.

    THE ANNUAL MUSIC COMPETITION

    The competition has four solo awards for Keyboard, Strings, Wind/Percussion and Singers, the winners of which compete for the Competition Gold Medal and First Prize. The solo awards are open to UK and Commonwealth citizens, including former Commonwealth countries, for instrumentalists and singers up to and including the age of 30 as at 1 June 2016.

    There are also two major awards for Ensembles: Ensemble A: strings, strings and piano, or piano duo/duet; Ensemble B wind, percussion, vocal or mixed ensembles. At least half, or the majority of ensemble members must be UK and Commonwealth citizens up to and including the age of 30 as at 1 June 2016. The remaining ensemble members may be of any nationality.

    The ROSL offers many performance opportunities to prizewinners after the competition at major venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London and has established a relationship with many UK festivals, Brighton, Kings Lynn, Lake District Summer Music Festival, and North Norfolk. ROSL ARTS award-winning series of chamber music concerts at Over-Seas House Edinburgh is a well established fixture of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In recent years ROSL ARTS has organised concerts and tours for prizewinners in Australia, Canada, Malta, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe.

    In addition to the section awards listed above, the ROSL has a prize fund of up to 15,000 for awards of not less than 1,000 each for non-UK Commonwealth musicians; for particular instruments or repertoire; and for young musicians of exceptional promise.

  • HOW TO APPLY

    Applicants must complete and submit the ROSL Annual Music Competition application form, and send it with the required documentation and fee to the address on the application form. Please keep a copy of submitted repertoire and retain the prospectus for reference. Application forms may be downloaded from the ROSL website: www.rosl.org.uk Scanned completed application forms sent by email will only be accepted if accompanied by all other relevant documentation and credit card details for payment of entry fee.

    Referees

    Applicants must nominate two musicians of standing who have agreed to support their application.

    Documents

    The following documents should be sent with the application form. Applicants should send photocopies as no documents will be returned.

    1. A photocopy of a birth certificate or similar official document confirming the candidates date and place of birth (not necessary for Ensembles).

    2. Curriculum vitae and a short biography (200 words maximum) suitable for printed concert programmes.

    Fees

    Soloists 20, Ensembles 20 per group. Cheques payable to ROSL. Major debit and credit cards accepted. In the event of a candidate not being accepted, the entrance fee will be refunded in full. Candidates who withdraw must give at least five working days notice otherwise the entry fee is forfeited, unless a valid medical certificate is produced.
