By featuring this article on Cosmic evolution, we are interrupting the series of narratives about the Imperalor’s observations on his round-the-world trip which in eluded places in remote mystical lands. However, the travel narratives wil l be resumed. E d i t o r

t u d e n t s of mysticism often puzzle over thethought that on the Cosmic or spiritual planethere is no evolution <>fthe inner self, or soul-

personality, since all suchevolution must take placeon the material plane.

They can readily understand and accept the teaching that the purpose oflife on the earth plane is the evolutionof soul-personality; however, they findit difficult to understand why this shouldcease on the Cosmic plane. The argument is that if the soul-personality continues to exist on the Cosmic plane,then certainly it must have an experience there and should produce somekind of change or growth.

The argument further continues thatsince all mystical teachings prove theunity of the universe and proclaim thetruth of the old saying. ‘As above, so

below.' that its opposite, ‘As below, soabove,’ must also be true. In other

words, if evolution, change or growth.Lakes place on one plane it must do so011 all planes. Where God manifeststhere must he motion, and this ischange—growth. Such reasoning na turally leads lo the question that, ifthere is any progress on the Cosmic

plane, what is its purpose?Lot us begin by considering first the

latter remarks, namely, that if there isunity throughout the universe, then.

most certainly, the principle should ap ply—‘As below, so above.’ The unityof the universe consists of a harmoniousrelationship of all phenomena as. forexample, the spectrum of radiation. Inthis spectrum we have such vibratoryenergy as sound, heat, electromagneticfrequencies, light, gamma and Cosmicrays, and on up the range to the phenomena of psychic consciousness. Theseare all ranged according to their wavelengths, that is. their particular rateof vibration. There is, then, a mechanistic relationship between the octavesof manifestation in this great Cosmic

Keyboard. Basically, all these phenomena are united because they are of theone great Cosmic field of motion. However, the manifestations in this fieldare quite different. In its perceivableeffects, for example, heat differs fromsound, and sound differs from light.

On the Cosmic plane, therefore, themanifestations we experience objectively here on the earth plane would notexist. The conditions, the phenomena

associated with the finite, objective consciousness and the human experience,would not prevail in the Cosmic—thatis, the spiritual plane—even thoughthere is a basic relationship. The soul,as part of the Cosmic Soul, when freefrom the physical organism of body,would not have the same functions aswe experience here. The human inclination is to attribute human characteristics and qualities to the Cosmic

lane. It is for this reason tha t manas, for so long made the mistake of

conceiving an anthropomorphic god,that is, one having the physical andmental form and qualities of man. Menhave thought that since they plan andconceive a series of purposes, that theGod, or the Cosmic, is likewise continually seeking to aspire, to improveand to achieve ends, as men do.

S o u l , a P o s i t i v e E x t e n s i o n

The soul of man is an extension ofthe positive, absolute being of the Cosmic. As such it lacks nothing. Further,it has no imperfections. It also has nolimitations. The soul, consequently,does not need to aspire to an exaltedstate within itself, or seek to free itself from limitations. The soul is not asegment, but an essence, an extensionof the Cosmic powers; thus, it is partof all, and everywhere. However, theCosmic intelligence has self-consciousness onty when it realizes itself. Thisis the equivalent of a light being reflected back to itself. It is the law ofthe Cosmic tha t it realizes itself througha substance which can properly reflectits nature. At the present time, insofaras we are aware, man is the only being who has such a substance. He isthe only being of which we have knowledge that has a sufficiently developedconsciousness so as to be able to realizehis unity with the whole Cosmic.Man’s consciousness of his own spiritual being, of the soul essence with in him,constitutes, then, the Cosmic self-consciousness.

There is a connection between Cosmic self-consciousness and personality.We know that the personality is anexpression of the perfect soul forcewithin man. Personality is the sum ofself, which is the manifestation of thesoul essence within our being and therelation of that self to environment. Or,to put it more simply, the personalityis the sum of the functions of self, ofour divine nature, and that divine nature’s relationship to our world. Themore we develop our consciousness ofthe divine essence within our being,the more the whole of our being becomes in attunement with the Cosmic.The highly evolved personality, then, isone that more nearly approaches thestate of perfection of which the soul

force within him consists. Let us realizetha t development of the soul-personalitynecessitates the introverting of our ob

jective consciousness so as to bringabout an awareness on our part of ourown soul essence.

To better understand this principle,let us use the analogy of a pure whitelight and a mirror. We desire tha t themirror shall completely reflect all ofthe wave bands of the white light sothat the reflection is equivalent in itsluminosity to the direct beams of thelight. However, we discover tha t themirror does not have an optically planesurface. By that, we mean that theglass has ripples in it and, perhaps, thesurface is somewhat dull, as well. Asa result, the reflected light is not com

parable with the incident beam fromthe light source. It is necessary, therefore, that the mirror be gradually im proved; the glass must be resurfacedand resilvered. As each operation iscontinued, the reflected light more andmore comes to equal the quality of theincident source. Eventually the end isachieved, the mirror perfectly reflectsthe light which falls upon it. The m irror and the light source are in perfectharmony with each other.

Now, let us call the reflected light

the personality. Can we not see tha tthe evolution that must come about, thedevelopment which must be made, must

be in the mirror if the reflected light(the personality) is to be improved?The light in itself, the source, needs noimprovement or refinement.

In the Cosmic, there does not existthat mortal consciousness after transition by which arises a realization of thesoul and from which would follow whatwe call the personality. It is true thathere on earth we can, at times, mystically attune through self direct withthe Cosmic and make contact with theuniversal wisdom, and by such inspiration evolve ourselves. However, we re peat, this is possible only when thesoul is in a physical body. Without this

body, without the morta l consciousnesswhich is a part of it, there cannotcome about an awareness of the higherconsciousness of the divine nature.

As to the idea that there must be acorresponding growth in the Cosmic,

and a development there just as ishere, such growth does not exist in theCosmic; there are only cycles of change.This cyclical function consists of thelower manifestations, those of the material plane, gradually evolving untilthey are of the higher octaves, the lower becoming higher again, and then thehigher extending itself outward intothe lower, or, as we say, into matter. The term evolving , however, does notmean an independent function, thatthe Cosmic is growing or expanding orthat there is a development in the Cosmic apart from the material or spiritualworld. The Cosmic has no expansionwithin itself; such is impossible, for itis all that is. It can only bring aboutchanges within its unified form, and

this has to be in conjunction with thematerial expression of itself.When the soul is withdrawn from

the body, that particular type of unity

ceases, and so the functions which follow from it as a consequence cease, until the unity is established again. Here,again, we have the law of the triangle,or the demonstration of the relationshipof the two forces. Though both points,or opposites, are of the whole, yet itis only when they are brought into direct relationship with each other thatthe third point, or manifestation comesabout. In other words, it is only whenthere are two opposite states which can be drawn to each other that we havethe third condition, which results fromtheir unity, and which may be sym

bolized as the completion of a triangle.When the soul remains wholly on the positive plane, it cannot produce orevolve a personality. It must seek affinity with the negative polarity of the body in order to become a manifestation of self-consciousness of the Cosmic,and a development of soul-personality.

From time to time, books, manuscripts, and documents of the past, recalling the history of the Rosicrucian Order in its struggle against the traditional enemies of mankind—Ignorance, Superstition, and Fear—will be presented by illustration and brief description.

Dr . C h r i s t o p h e r w i t t , who referredto himself in his will simply as a“Practitioner of Physick,” was a respected and important figure in the life

of Germantown, Pennsylvania, for amatter of sixty years. He seems tohave met Johannes Kelpius, the Masterof the Rosicrucian Colony on the Wis-sahickon, in 1704; and in 1706 he came

from Philadelphia to Germantown to become its first practicing physician.He was just thirty, personable andstrongly inclined to the mystical wayof life. From Kelpius himself he received his Rosicrucian initiation. Theywere friends as long as Kelpius lived.Dr. Witt painted a portrait of Kelpius(see reproduction above)* and latertranslated some of his German hymnsinto English.

Other interests, too, Dr. Witt foundtime for outside his profession—botany,

for one thing. He was a friend of the botanist John Bartram and of the evenmore famous English one, Peter Col-linson, as well. He made an organ, alsoa clock, said to be the first one made inAmerica. He was interested in the occult sciences, astrology principally, casting the nativities of individuals in con

junction with his medical practice. Neither his standing in the communitynor his practice seems to have suffered because he was sometimes calledconjurer.

According to Pennypacker, Dr. Wittmust be credited with issuing the firstmedical diploma ever given in America.It was presented to John Kaigline onFebruary 20, 1738, and stated thatKaigline “has lived with me a considerable time as a disciple to learn thearts and mysteries of Chemistry, Physick, and the Astral Sciences, wherebyto make a more perfect discovery of thehidden causes of occult and uncommondiseases . . . has been very diligentand studious . . . may be solely de

ended upon in all things, so far ase follows my instruction, and hope he

may in all things answer the confidencethat may be reposed in him.”

As has been before stated ( Rosicrucian Digest, June, 1950), Dr. Witt’s scientific instruments were presented tothe American Philosophical Society.

Dr. Witt passed through transitionon January 30, 1765, at the age ofninety. He was buried in the family

lot of his friends the Warmers, a fewundred feet in the rear of a little stone-

house in which he had once lived.

[ o m e t i m e this year a London archaeologist hopesto find a few pieces ofcarved stone or brickwhich will render theworld’s history books out

of date.Those relics may be brought to the surface

of the sea from the submerged continent of Atlantis. They will prove—if discovered—that a civilisation existedin an area now covered deep under theWestern Atlantic.

In legend and folklore, Atlantis isno mystery. In almost every country

bordering the ocean and the Mediterranean, from Babylon to Mexico, andEgypt to Panama, records from the dimtwilight of time refer to it as a land of

beauty, fertility, and highly organisedlife.

But to modern anthropology and geology its existence during the half amillion years in which man has livedon earth is a subject of acute controversy.

In a house in Chelsea the man whoknows more about Atlantis of fact andfable than anyone else, Mr. EgertonSykes, is organising an expedition withtwo bathyspheres and under-water cam

eras, which he hopes will definitelyidentify the lost continent.What are the facts about Atlantis?

Experts believe it to have been thecradle of the human race. And they

believe that its destruction put back the progress of the human race by manythousands of years.

An enormous mass of literature exists on the subject. There are 5,000

books in the world’s museums devotedto it.

They range from Plato’s description,written about 400 B. C., to a revisedwork by a great nineteenth-centuryauthority, Ignatius Donnelly, publishedlast year in New York.

Today, there is complete confirma

tion of the existence at one period ofa vast tract of land rising high abovethe rolling planes of the Atlantic sea

bed.It runs down the middle of the

ocean like an elongated S, stretchingfrom Iceland almost to the Antarctic.

Only a few of its highest peaks— 20,000 feet above the sea bed—emergeabove water to form the islands ofTristan da Cunha, Ascension, and theAzores.

A remarkable fact about the Ridgeis that its shape fits with extraordinarydetail into the contours of the coastson either side of the ocean.

It is the missing piece of a jigsav puzzle which needs only to be pushedtogether to become one great mass.

Geologists are satisfied that Americahas slowly drifted away from Europeand Africa.1 It is still cloing so.

The break which left the spinal column of the mass by itself must haveoccurred millions of years before anyform of mammalian life appeared.

But there has always been argumentconcerning the time at which the isolated land disappeared beneath thewaves.

Conventional scientific views are thatthe sinking was part of the birth throesof the world, like the original separation.

“But,” points out Mr. Sykes, “terrestrial changes of the pre-mammal eranaturally don’t get into folklore.

“Yet stories of a Deluge are universal.They are found in the Sagas, the Eddas,legends of the Aztecs, Mayas, and Tol-tecs of Central and South America, aswell as in the records of the Babylonians, Hebrews, and Egyptians.

“All the peoples of antiquity tellsimilar stories of the Garden of Delights, the Hesperides, the Garden ofEden, the Terrestrial Paradise, andAtlantis.

“The most reliable of all the accounts, given factually and withoutthe symbolism of folklore, is that of

Plato. It is incomplete because it washis last work.

“But he gives descriptions of thecountry, its mode of government, engineering works for irrigation and trans

port, industries, and buildings in greatdetail.

“Plato wrote about Atlantis becausethe subject had been of great interestto his ancestor, Solon, who went toEgypt to get details from the historicalrecords kept by the priests.

“Not the least interesting point isthat Plato was a philosopher. He hadno interest in fiction or romance. He

analysed everything before he wrote itdown.”

Plato puts the date of the destructionof Atlantis, which he says happened ina day and a night, at about 9,500 B. C.This is much earlier than any era ofrecorded history.

In other accounts of the catastrophe,such as the Biblical story of the Flood,the inundation was not as sudden asone day and night.

There are several theories to accountfor both the sudden and gradual drowning of the continent.

“One,” explains Mr. Sykes, “is thatthe moon was not a satellite of theearth at all, but a planet describing an

orbit between those of the world andMars.“It came too close, was captured by

the earth’s attraction for a smaller body,and retained as a satellite.”

When this happened the upheavalwas tremendous. The Poles shiftedslightly. Enormous masses of waterwere pulled by gravity to raise the levelof the Atlantic by many hundreds offeet.

In a matter of days Atlantis was engulfed—but not before a few of the inhabitants took to boats and rafts tocarry the tidings to the Old and NewWorlds, where their stories becamelegends.

At first, Atlantis may not have beenvery far under the water. Graduallyit lias sunk deeper.

However it happened, the Atlantisexperts mostly put the date of the disaster at about 10,000 B. C.

The first true men were scratchingand painting pictures on bones and rock 10,000 years before that in the cavesof Spain and Southwestern France.

These scratchings suggest a considerable training in line, colour, and im

pressionism—and the men who madethem lived within a few days’ voyageof the lost continent.

Mr. Sykes plans to search imder thesurface of the sea around the Azores.

“When these islands were rediscovered by the Portuguese they were

uninhabited,” he says. “Any traces of buildings must therefore belong to anearlier culture.

“Obviously we cannot hope to findvery much, for the area I plan to investigate would have been high on amountainside.“It will be much the same as if somefuture explorer had to rely on relicsfound on the upper slopes of MontBlanc to prove the existence of civilisation in Europe.

“But there should be traces: balustrades, terraces, stairways, even atemple.

“If I can photograph a few relics ofthis kind and possibly dredge some upto the surface, I have little doubt thata large expedition would soon be arranged to make a complete survey.”

Of the lives and habits of the At-lantean peoples, Sykes has amassed considerable detail. They were sun worshippers, and their religion was carriedon in Egypt and Central America afterwards. They had flattened skulls.

The Atlanteans could not write orwork in metals, except in the naturalore called orichalcum by Plato, theidentity of which is unknown, but mayhave been copper.Like all Stone Age peoples they hadgreat building skill, basing their designson astronomical figures. They had theusual love of ornament, particularly

This fact brings yet another grainof evidence of Atlantis to the dossierscollected by Mr. Sykes.

In the tombs of the Mayas, in theYucatan Peninsula of Central America,

jade ornaments have been found.In the earliest tombs they are quite

large. In the later ones they are tiny.The supply of jade had been cut offand became increasingly scarce.

There are no jade deposits on theAmerican continent nearer than BritishColumbia and Alaska, thousands ofmiles to the north, where the Mayasnever penetrated.

“The prehistoric races of Americacannot be explained,” suggests Sykes,“except by the existence of Atlantis or

Yet they built pyramids like theEgyptians,2carved elephant figures likethe Indians, and had a great civilisationwhile Europe was still in barbarism.

Among the masses of pamphlets, books, and maps which bestrew Sykes’soffice is a file which contains what is probably the most dramatic evidenceabout Atlantis of all that has been written in the thousands of years that thetopic has whetted man’s curiosity.

That evidence is the account of anexperience of an airman during the

war.He was a ferry pilot, bringing anaircraft from Natal, on the coast ofBrazil, to Dakar.

He reported that he saw the remnantsof buildings on the ocean floor as heneared the African coast.

The setting sun was at an angle of 90degrees to the slope of the submergedhill on which the Duildings stood. Therays threw shadows on one side and

brought the other into sharp relief.

says, “that this man was trained tokeep his eyes open for U-boats, liferafts, and anything unusual on or under the sea, and to report it accurately.

“It is very unlikely that he wouldhave troubled to report a mere contourof the sea bed which by a trick oflight gave the illusion of artificialconstruction.”

o m e time ago I talkedwith a young man whoseexperience in the military service had forcedhim to a consideration ofthe meaning and end oflife. An underlying frustration was evident in hisremark that life to him

was a trench along which man had totravel—a trench full of unexpectedand lurking dangers.

My experience as a registered nursehas brought me the conviction thatmany people are more or less in agreement with that young man. Theirmental processes are certainly as darkand tortuous as his. Such confused anddistorted states of thinking undoubtedlyare born of fear, and out of unknownand unnamed fears, superstitions grow.

In almost every case, at least thosefalling under my observation, somefundamental principle of nature has been imperfectly understood, distortedand given an unhealthy tone. A tilingor condition has a certain meaning andvalue and that meaning or value isaccepted without question.

Many superstitions no doubt arecarry overs from primitive societies andoriginated as tabus, but it would seemthat today a far greater number aremerely ideas that have a foundation infact and are called superstitions only because no one bothers to separate the

distorted covering from the soundkernel.

The superstition regarding death’scoming most often in the early morning hours is one such. Unquestionably,the reason is that the natural vitalityis lower at such times, and the re-sistence being weakened, the way toward transition is made easier. So although it is a fact that death as a process is more likely to occur in the earlymorning, there is no reason for fearfully expecting it to be so. The general condition of the patient is also animportant factor.

In this connection, superstition saysthat if a seriously ill person pecks at his bedclothing, he will die. In his History of Life and Death, Bacon says: “Theimmediate signs which precede deathare . . . fumbling with the hands . . .grasping and clutching . . . the nose

becoming sharp, the face pallid . . .coldness of the extremities.”

Shakespeare in Henry V has muchthe same idea: “After I saw him fumblewith the sheets, and play with flowers,and smile upon his fingers’ ends, I knewthere was but one way; for his nosewas as sharp as a pen. He bade me laymore clothes on his feet; I put myhands into the bed and felt them andthey were cold as any stone.”

It is unlikely that such a belief grew because of general familiarity with thisfamous passage from Shakespeare or

out of respect for Hostess Quickly’sknowledge of medicine—or even out oflove for old John Falstaff and how hedied. The superstition is older thanthe seventeenth century. Shakespeareand Bacon seem to be following the pronouncements of the Greek physician Hippocrates , fifth century B.C. In hisobservation of the process of death, hewas merely describing the externalsymptoms. Superstition made these thecause naturally, because it was not until Sir William Harvey’s discovery ofthe circulation of the blood in 1616that anything like a scientific reasonmight have been given for the conditions noted.

Slowing circulation would accountfor coldness of the extremities and thatenveloping chill would naturally leadto more attention to the bedding. Thewaning vitality would result in theweak and furtive motions described as

pecking.Associated with death superstitions,

too, is the belief that a howling dog presages death. Animals have a greater sensitivity than man. The conditions surrounding death would therefore affect dogs most keenly, especially if they were particularly attracted tothe dying individual.

There are perhaps an equal numberof superstitions connected with birth—that if a baby fails to cry lustily, itwill always be weak; that more babiesare born at night and when the moonis full than at any other time. A littlethought will suggest the underlyingreasons.

Science it is true is making progressin ridding mankind of certain of itssuperstitions; but, at best, this is a slow

process. It is slow because the humanmind is so constituted that it wouldrather cling to beliefs which are superstitious than to do the thinking necessary to free itself of them.

Even while science is busy clearingaway the superstitious fears and beliefswhich are the outgrowth of yesterday’s

imperfect knowledge, the unknowns oftoday’s living conditions are fosteringother superstitions in their place.

The only hope seems to lie in rousing the individual to think for himselfand in patiently helping him throw offharmful fears or phobias. Fortunately,modem medicine is more and more giving serious attention to the psychological aspects of the matter. Certainly,nurses are thus being better preparedfor their job of ministering to the physically ill as well as to those bedridden

by superstition. V

Fa c t and fiction seem always to have been prettywell mixed in regard toelephants. Not alwayshave opinions been soquaintly expressed as byTopsell who wrote in his

History of Four-footed Beasts , in 1607: “In the

summer-time they choose out and gather the sweetest flowers, and . . . theywill not eat meat until they take oftheir flowers, and dress the brimsof their mangers therewith”; stillthe fiction greatly prevails that ele phants are afraid of mice, that theyhave an exceedingly long life span, andthat they never forget.

An interesting observation has beenmade over a twenty-five-year periodthat elephants prefer sandstone to granite to walk on. Herbert P. T. Hyde,with the Geological Survey Office in Nigeria, reported on his findings in theBritish Magazine Nature for February-25, 1950.

The elephants’ preference is so pronounced, writes Mr. Hyde, that in thethree districts he has studied, the areain which elephants circulate is alwayslimited by the extent of the sandstone base. It may be a matter of food, thecomposition of the water, or the character of the weathering soil, or something altogether different. Mr. Hydeis puzzled as to the reason. Can youexplain it?

THE OBLIGATION OF GROWTH

r o w t h is an attribute oflife. We know it primarily as one of life’s manifestations. It is almostimpossible to conceive ofany form of plant oranimal life which wouldnot show various stagesof growth. So importantis evolvement in the scheme of things

that we find all life-forms equipped insuch manner that growth involuntarilytakes care of itself. The infant hum an being, the seeds of a plant, the firstmanifestations of life in all other livingthings, indicate a potentiality whichis borne out in time by the actualchanges that occur in the growing

processes.In the case of the human being, this

growth takes place both physically and

mentally. Certain physical parts ofthe adult are not complete at birth, but

physical changes continue to take placeso that the human being develops intoits proper form. The infant does nothave much mental coordination, but astime passes it becomes possible for theeyes to focus, the other sense organsto register, and the haphazard movement of the body to gradually coordinate by means of the mental controlof physical action. All these thingstake place, we are reminded, involuntarily or instinctively. If man were bom without these involuntary urgestoward growth, he would have to be

prepared mentally to voluntarily and by his will control the growing steps.

Eventually, this involuntary tendency toward growth reaches a point ofcompletion or attainment. More and

more through childhood, youth, andthe early adult years we have to giveattention to our own growth. It is asif nature had purposely set a patternand given the initial impetus. Therecomes a time when the adult, insofaras nature is concerned, is completeenough to begin to exist for himselfand to direct his own growth beyondtha t time. Although this conditionapplies primarily to the mental side ofthe being, it is not altogether void ofits physical possibilities. Man can by proper diet and exercise modify his physical growth. In adult years physical changes continue to be manifest, bymeans of age, but mental changes can be brought about by the direction ofmind and will.

Voluntary growth begins to replaceinvoluntary growth while one is veryyoung, and response to early trainingis an indication of the ability to learn.At the same time there is an attemptto instill in the mind of the young thatthis idea of growth must be so firmlyestablished mentally that the human being will direct certain attention toit. The pattern set by natu re is the one

that must be followed through life.We are carried to a certain point, andthen the responsibility is ours. Tolearn and experience conditions of lifeis to place upon ourselves the responsi bility of mental and spiritual growthand development. Just as involuntarygrowth is primarily a physical matter,so voluntary growth is primarily amental or spiritual matter.

Man is helped by nature to becomeequipped with the proper physical andmaterial equipment or things to use. Itis his responsibility to use these thingswell and to so adjust his thinking thathe can gain knowledge and experience,all of which is a part of his mentalgrowth. Whether or not we reach a

state of adult maturity depends uponour acceptance of this obligation ofgrowth. Success in filling our place inlife and the responsibilities createdtherein depends upon our spiritual outlook and whether or not we continueto direct the processes of growth toward the ultimate attainment of knowledge of the absolute, of the reality,and of God.

Since thousands of readers of the Rosicrucia n Diges t have not read many of the earlier articles of our late Imperator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, we adopted the editorial policy of publishing each month one of his outstanding articles, so that his thoughts would continue to reside within the pages of this publication.

portant or outstanding benefit, in a general sense,resulting from the studiesand practices of the Rosicrucian pr inciples Iwould unhesi ta t inglystate that it is the begin

ning of a newer and better life througha newer and better concept of God.

While it is true that the Rosicrucianfraternity has always been a very practical organization of real workersin the world, we cannot overlook thefact that the fundamental principlesenabling the followers of the Rosy Crossto become more happy and successfulin their earthly lives are related tospiritual truths leading to an awakening of the spiritual concepts of life.

Even he who is most busily engagedwith the material problems of life andwho thinks he has little time for spiritual thought and meditation often keenly realizes that he needs a better andmore intimate acquaintance with thespiritual things of life and especially a

better concept of God and God’s laws.It is useless for anyone but the foolishatheist and the imbecilic mind to tryto argue that the average man andwoman is not benefited by a better acquaintance with the Supreme Mind

tha t rules this universe. It is an easilydemonstrated fact that as a man or awoman is attuned with a more perfectunderstanding of God, so the whole oflife is changed for the better.

Fortunately, the Rosicrucian teachings have kept pace with the evolution

ary progress of man’s concept of allthings. If in five, ten, or fifty thousandyears of human evolution and humanstruggle toward higher ideals man hasnot brought himself closer to Godthrough a better understanding of God,then we would have to admit thathuman evolution is failing and thatthe perfection of the human race is im possible. But I dare say that there arefew rational beings who would ventureto make such a statement.

The nearer man approaches to Godin his understanding the more evolvedand more inclusive becomes his consciousness of God and God’s principles.The concepts and ideals that satisfiedhim, or brought a satisfactory understanding of God to him, centuries agoare unsatisfactory today. Man’s better understanding of man has made agreat change in man’s concept ofGod, and man’s experience of the working of many of God’s laws even herein our daily material affairs has tendedto change man’s concept of God andHis principles. The general working

of the laws of love and mercy and justice in all of our human affairs haslikewise modified man’s concept of whatGod’s laws and principles must be like.Even the continued evolution of humanlove or the love of human beings towardone another and especially the love of

parents toward children in the developing civilization has taught man that theFather of us all must be a more loving

being than we understood in our earliestconcepts.

The Rosicrucian teachings have kept pace with these evolving concepts inthe mind of man and continually anticipated the newer questions, the newer problems, and the newer explanations that man meditates upon in the

period when he lifts himself out of thematerial affairs of life and seeks toraise his consciousness to a higher

plane.First of all, we find that the Rosi

crucian teachings reveal God as notonly a loving, merciful, just ruler, butas one to be loved instead of feared.How easily many of us can recall thatin our youth it was a commonplace ex

pression to say that this or that individual was doing wrong because he didnot have the fear of God in his heart.It seemed to be the accepted standardor concept to think of God as someoneto be recognized with terror and awe.Little children were taught that theyshould do certain good things and refrain from doing certain sinful things

because they should fear God and Hismysterious power of punishing themfor the evil they did. The fear ideawas developed to such an extreme thatthey did not dare think of God whilesmiling or laughing, or to speak ofHim in any casual way or with anyother attitude than that of extreme

fear. It is no wonder that the childrencame to believe that God could be ap proached only at bedtime through theweek, or in the church on Sunday,while on bended knee and with handsupraised in typical pagan attitude offearful adoration.

The erroneous Biblical quotation intimating that revenge was a power exclusively given to God, and also thatGod visited His wrath and envy, hatredand retribution, upon men and women,and that He was jealous and suspicious,were ideas commonly promulgated by

the religious leaders who based theirargument upon isolated and mistranslated passages in the Bible.

It is not a wonder that for ages menspeculated upon the loving ana merci

ful nature of God and asked why Heallowed many sinners to succeed in lifewhile those who tried to be pious andhonest were unfortunate. Reasoningfrom such a false premise was responsible for the doubt that gradually arosein the minds of millions of persons asto the love and supreme wisdom andmercy of such a God. We may safelysay that the strongest arguments used by the atheists today in their contentions that there is no God are basedupon the fact that God has been misrepresented to millions of persons orrepresented as such a being as wouldwarrant us in doubting that He was amerciful and loving Father.

I V c i r A p p r o a c h t o L i v i n g

The Rosicrucian conception of God isso wholly different from all of this andyet so consistent with what Jesustaught, and the greatest disciples andLights among men have revealed in the

past, that we find the Rosicrucians entering into a new life through their

better understanding of God and God’s

ways. Such an understanding brings peace and contentment to the wearyself, to the tried and sorely tested

physical body, and to the perplexedmind. It brings hope and renewed lifeand energy and a firm conviction that

justice will prevail and that truth will be demonstrated.

Such understanding opens up a new phase of life and a broader horizon hereon this earth plane. It brings Godcloser to man, more intimate, more

personal, and more friendly in every

hum an sense of the word. It makesGod’s laws appear in their true lightas not only immutable and not only

just but as rational, reasonable, andthoroughly understandable. It doesaway with all of the seeming inconsistencies and injustices and takes out ofthe picture entirely the idea that Godis an arbitrary ruler and that He is jealous or has any of the elements ofwrath and revenge in His consciousness.It makes man realize that he and notan unmerciful God brings into his lifethe unfortunate results of his errors,

and that instead of God finding joyand happiness in the suffering that wehave had visited upon us, He is sym

pathetic and willing to forgive if we but ask for it and make ourselves worthyof it.

Certainly the change of the conceptof God is the greatest change that cancome into the life of any man or woman, for as I have said above it is fundamental to all of our thinking and doingin every phase of our existence. Butthis we cannot realize nor test the truthof until our concept of God has beenchanged and we enter into the newlife and new way of living that resultfrom such a change.

The Rosicrucian teachings, therefore,are of extreme importance from a pure

ly religious or spiritual point of view

inasmuch as this one great change ofconcept in regard to God and His lawswill bring that regeneration and thatrebirth which every religion claims to

be the ultimate end of its doctrines and practices.

Let us keep this in mind and speakof it to those who may inquire aboutthe Rosicrucian teachings and about therelation of these teachings to religiousand spiritual matters. It is not necessary to have a religious creed or dogmatic outline of religious principles inorder to become more godly ana morespiritual, for a closer and better understanding of God and His ways of working, and to enable every man andwoman to understand and adopt thetrue divine laws as the only creed that

is necessary for perfect living. V A V

I believe that the journalism whichsucceeds best—and best deserves success—fears God and honors man; isstoutly independent, unmoved by prideof opinion or greed of power, constructive, tolerant but never careless, selfcontrolled, patient, always respectful ofits readers but always unafraid; isquickly indignant at injustice; is unswayed by the appeal of privilege orthe clamor of the mob; seeks to giveevery man a chance and, as far as lawand honest wage and recognition ofhuman brotherhood can make it so, anequal chance; is profoundly patrioticwhile sincerely promoting internationalgood will and cementing world-com-radeship; is a journalism of humanity,of and for today’s world.

Is the link between the Celt and the

Indian (in a whole new epic of American origins) the ancient, almost unknown Icelandic sagas telling of Irishspeaking people observing typical Cul-dee rites on the soil of present-day NewHampshire and Massachusetts? Wasthe great center of the Culdees the underground monastery with its typicallyCeltic structures, excavated at NorthSalem, New Hampshire, in June, 1937?

In a previous article, “World Underground” (Rosicrucian Digest , Nov.,1948), I pointed to traces of great subterranean civilizations that may haveexisted in pre-Columbian America. The North Salem discovery is one confirmation of my thesis and the still-existingunderground highway network of thePeruvian Incas is another. Other confirmations will undoubtedly be madesince even the conservative materialisticscience now shows the flexibility toadapt the profound techniques of theever-progressing occult science.

Long before the impressive discoveries at North Salem, legend and accidental archaeological “finds” indicated

the existence of Celtic colonies in early America. Therewere the tales of Brandan,the Irishman, and Madoc, theWelshman—both Celts—whosupposedly and centuries agoreached a westward continenteasily identified as ours.There was that marked affinity discovered by certainauthorities between the language of the Mandan Indiansand that of the ancient Welsh.Two eighteenth-century frontier missionaries reportedwitnessing the enactment ofa religious ceremony in Old

Welsh by a tribe which may have usedit as a sacred tongue in the same manner that Roman Catholics use Latin oras the Russians use Old Slavic.

One writer believed that a close connection existed between Peru and ancient Egypt. Coincidentally, persistenttradition indicates that the Culdees

had their seat in Egypt before theirmigration, as an order of mystic scholars,to Ireland. And, coincidentally, increasing evidence places the origin ofthe Megalithic branch of the Celticfamily in the North African regionwhich includes Egypt.

Orthodox science dismissed these cluesto a lost chapter of American historyas imaginative pieces of “Celtic fantasy.” Its smug mind-set was an iron

barrier to any investigation into thetruths told allegorically and which obviously underly all folklore.

Then tangible evidences that couldnot be ignored began staring the savantsin the face. A rock-carving at West-ford, Massachusetts, on the MohawkTrail pictured a cross with a humanface superimposed. It was clearly ofthe same genre as sacred carvingsfound in Ireland. A great stone “beehive” dwelling, located in the vicinityof Upton, Massachusetts, was of thesame style and architecture as the an-

cient underground dwellings that Christian missionaries found among the earlyIrish—so was a smaller “beehive” atHopkinton. In addition, William Cheney, of the latter town, uncovered artifacts that were evidently the work of

a highly-civilized people skilled inengineering.The scientists then began digging in

some old ruins known as “Patee’s Caverns” in the town of North Salem.Popular ignorance had it that thecrumbling structures had been built bya French Huguenot family named Pateewho had settled on the site in 1825.But this wras refuted when the excavators discovered the huge trunk of a pinetree growing up through the structure.The pine would have had to grow forone hundred fifty years to have penetrated downward and cracked the oldwalls, and then would have had to rotfor another half-century.

Indications were that the Patees had built their own home over the mysterious walls. Moreover, the par titioning walls in their cellar were entirelydifferent from the walls constructed bythe ancient builders in the half-acrearea of the cave settlement of the forgotten Irish colonists.

The climax came when the spadesof the diggers brought up the underground sanctuary of a group which theIcelandic sagas of Western voyagesclearly identify as the Culdees. A scoreof stone houses and huts, altars andshelters, ramps, drains, and wells, sentry houses and streets of obvious Irishconstruction, bespoke the throbbing lifeof that now silent community.

The settlement was grouped neatlyaround a rectangular plaza fromwhich radiated well-paved streets and

passageways.Clay Perry, distinguished authority

on caves, who visited the site, wrotein his book, Underground New England.' published two years later that:

. . . it had become evident that we were peering into the gloomy depths of the very ‘dens and caves' in which a fabled people, many times mentioned in the ancient history of the Norsemen

< and the Icelandic-Norse, had lived. Rosicrucian And that they had built them. And Digest that they had lasted perhaps a thousand August years.1950 1 Stephen Daye Press, Brattl eboro, V c. 1939.

And that here wr itten in the stones, as well as in the sagas which gave the

first clue to their origin, was the story of the real discovery of America—by an unknown band of Irish voyagers.

No t troglodytes or gnomes but hardy,

stu rdy members of a race of Christian people driven from their ancient strongholds by the fiercer and hardier Vikings

— who found them in America when they came.

I do not accept the rather dogmaticconnotation of the word discoverers thatPerry uses to describe these Celticcolonizers. He gives it an arbitrary andexclusive ring that is at variance withmany ancient, pre-Columbian writingsof occult scholars who mention Americain allegorical terms. As a Celt, I amforced to the conclusion that many peo

ples discovered and colonized America —including Negroes and Polynesians.But, at least, the North Salem settlement gives us proof positive of onesuch “discovery.”

The dolmens or chambers of upright,uncut stones covered by a single largestone, the cromlechs, or circular arrangements of standing stones, thesolar rooms found at New Salem areall authentically Irish. Perry points outthat “a large Y-shaped stone hall orman-made cavern” at the site “is com parable only to the souterrains (underground structures) constructed by themaster-builders who worked under theearly Irish kings in the land that isnow Ireland.

The fact that the Y-cavem is thecentral building of the community suggests that it was a religious temple. Atthe same time, its fireplace, its air vents,its superb channels for light, heat, ventilation, and drainage suggest that itwas a residence for those who attendedupon the ceremonial rites of the relig

ion. A deep recess, curtained by a slabof rock in the east wall of the mainhall, could have been either an altar, a bed, or a throne for the grand masteror high priest.

Significantly, all of the undergrounddwelling-quarters resemble the ancientIrish souterrains even in the irregularity of their placement. Houses m the North Salem site face each other in alldirections; passageways between thehouses are irregular and complicated,so as to confuse any enemy who might

penetrate the outer defenses and invadethe caves.

Not fa r from the Y-cavem is a hugeile of thousands of stones. Could thesee the remains of an ancient college of

the Culdees? Furthe r investigation mayyield the answer.

Fortunately, the first investigationsof the site were made by William B.Goodwin,3 an intelligent, if conservative, archaeologist who now owns the

property. It was Goodwin who discovered the labyrinth of underground

buildings, the great ramp, eighteenyards wide, running from the hilltopto the wall overlying the plaza, andthe huge granite slab, mounted on stonelegs, which may have been used as awine press or a laundry-block by thecolonists. Microscopic examination of athree-inch carved groove, around theedges of the slab, revealed that thecarving had not been cut with metaltools. The carving of a deer was foundon a small stone near a tiny altar inthe Y-cavern.

It is the considered opinion of Goodwin, no romantic among scientists, thatthese ancient ruins were the capital ora settlement of the early Irish-speakingAmerican nation which the Norsechroniclers called variously Hvitra- mannland , Great Ireland, or Albania, from the original Celtic name Albion, of Britain. (Godwin’s conclusions areshared by many distinguished American authorities, and by Irish archaeologists who have examined photographsof the North Salem ruins. The lattersay that the comparison with similarIrish structures admits no doubt of theircommon origin.

Moreover, the location of Great Ireland, as given in the Icelandic Landna- mabok3 written by Ari Thorgilsson in1026, corresponds to the location of present-day New England.

“To the south of inhabited Greenlandare wild and desert tracts and ice-covered mountains,” says the Landnama- bok. “Then comes the land of theSKRAELLINGS, beyond this Markland,and then Vinland the Good. Next tothis, and somewhat behind it (inland)lies ALBANIA . . . whither vessels

mine—H.P.) It was here that severalIrishmen and Icelanders recognized Ari(Marson), the son of Mar and Katlaof Reykjanes, whom there had not fora long time been tidings of, and whomthe natives of the country had madetheir chief.”

Further, the sagas tell us, “Ari Marson was blown there from Iceland andwas not allowed to depart and was baptized there.”

The reference to the baptism of AriMarson, clearly indicates the presencein America of people professing someform of Christianity, centuries beforethe coming of the Spanish Catholic missionaries in the wake of Columbus. Theconclusion from the sagas is that these

people were Irish-speaking.The Viking, Thorfinn Karlsefni,came in contact with them on his

Greenland expedition, which is estimated to have taken place between1011 and 1017. Earlier, Bjami theChampion, who probably left Icelandin the same ship with Ari Marson, alsowas shipwTecked “in the vicinity ofGreat Ireland, where the people spokeIrish and had Irish names.” From 1011until 1029, other Icelandic explorersnote the presence of Irish-speaking peo

ple on our continent.

The leaders of the Irish, Goodwin believes, were the Culdees, whose underground society at North Salem mayhave already been more than a hundred3rears old at the time of its discovery by the Norsemen.

Like the Rosicrucians, the Culdees believed in the Cosmic unity of allthings, in the indestructibility of theuniverse, and in man’s ability to im-

rove himself by cooperation with the

armonious, beneficent Cosmic forcesof that universe. Increasing light onthe Culdees indicates Egypt as theirknown point of origin. We know thattheir tenets were also the ruling principles of Atlantis from whom Egyptmay have derived its great body ofknowledge. Occult research may someday discover that the forerunners of theIrish Culdees were refugee priests whofled from Atlantis when the great continent sank.

Evidently, the Culdees who came toAmerica had already extended their

influence beyond Great Ireland toneighboring pre-Columbian countries.

“We have remarkable proof,” William B. Goodwin writes in an originalmanuscript, “that the people found inMarkland by Thorfinn Karlsefni wereIrish Culdee monks, for they were re ported to wear white robes, bear banners on poles and march (in procession)shouting loudly. Also we Know tha tthese informants of Karlsefni, the captured boys, were thought by him or hisIcelandic-Greenlandic companions to bespeaking the Irish tongue and theirinference was that their habitat wasGreat Ireland, of which these Norsemen had heard before they came toMarkland (or Vineland).”

said that “the white-robed men dweltacross the water from the place inwooded Markland, where they had beenmade prisoners. But the three who escaped and ‘sank into the ground’ intocaves, or dens, resided in the immediateneighborhood and not where the white-robed men, presumably Culdees, dweltin caves or dens. It would seem thenthat these people were stragglers ormembers of another colony, entirely.”

Probably, in this writer’s opinion,they were “members of another colony”

sent out from Great Ireland. In aland inhabited by hostile Indians andfrequently visited by their old enemies,the hostile Vikings, Irish settlers wouldlive as their ancestors had lived forcenturies in hidden undergrounddwellings.

But we know now that we have notonly uncovered one more lost episode ofAmerican history. The exciting discovery at North Salem, with its relationto known facts about Irish colonizers setdown by the Norse, may lead also tothe rediscovery of a lost chapter in theage-old development of occult science.

The Culdees were in Ireland, centuries before St. Patrick. They wereone of the higher esoteric orders of theDruid religion, the custodians of itsmost sacred truths. In their communities of thirteen each, “they lived soberly and righteously, godly and continently.” They were given to “fastingsand vigils and prayers and meditations, sparing in diet and occupied withlabor.” They spent much time in study

ing “the sacred literature of the divinelaw.”

Some writers place the origin of theCuldees in ancient Chaldea, fromwhence came the name Culdee. Celticchronology, which speaks so reverentlyof them, derives their name from theGaelic term cele-de , or “espoused ofGod.” But both explanations are highly debatable. One historian, writing oftheir role in the fifth century in Britain,calls them “the first true priests ofGod.”

By their examples of purity, of studyof consecration, and of belief in theone God, they helped pave the way forthe coming of Patrick. In fact, thegreat missionary (himself a Celt) was probably conversant with many of their

teachings. Certainly, he did not regard the Culdees as enemies. For thatmatter, the occult sciences always confirm the tenets of religion in their f jurest sense and always give re-igion a broader and more universal

interpretation.The Culdees were gladly received

into the Christian church as a body,either by St. Patrick or St. Columba.They left the dying Druid religion, probably because it had fulfilled itstask in the Cosmic plan and had degenerated under a mass of barbarousaccretions from ignorant invaders.

The grand master of the Culdees became St. Columban, a yoimger fellow-

priest of St. Columba. For generations, the Culdees visited the variousChristian monasteries in Britain andIreland, instructing the monks in theancient truths. Often a Culdee would be assigned to a monastery as a permanent teacher. The influence of thesesaintly mystics was reflected in theCeltic church for centuries. And thatchurch invoked the tradition of theCuldees in its long and unsuccessfulstruggle for independence from Rome.

In 795, the plundering Vikings reduced the Celtic countries—Ireland,Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, and the Isleof Man—to smoking rubble and ruins.The great Culdee center at Armagh,

THE LIFE AND TEACHINGS OF A MASTER ROSICRUCIAN

philosophers, so-called,whose lives, teachings

and accomplishmentsare deeply significant,there is one who ises pe cia lly interestingto Rosicrucians. It isEmpedocles, the scientist, physician, philosopher, and Master ofa very flourishing Rosicrucian Lodge.

Empedocles lived thelife of a true Rosicrucian mystic; that is,he applied the teachings of the Order andwent about performing such seeming miracles and marvelousmanifestations of theteachings as one would expect from aMaster mystic.

If we would believe all the fragmentary accounts of his life as presented by some historians and encyclopedias,we would look upon Empedocles aseither a forerunner of Jesus or else asthe greatest enigma of history. True,some consideration must be given tothe fact that most of the publishedaccounts of his life and wrork were

written by admirers, students, or thosewho were wonderfully benefited by his personally demonstrated “miracles.” Wemust allow for honest exaggeration,sincere praise, tempered with bias andthe desire to make the name of Em

pedocles forever famous.But the published accounts and rec

ords of the life and work of Empedoclesare too fragmentary, too incomplete,and too opinionated to be of any realvalue to the Rosicrucian who desiresthe truth regarding this most inspiring

Master.

Those who haveventured to piece together the few publicfragments regardinghis life and philosophyseem to fear to expressthemselves f reely;they prefer merely torecord his greatness astraditional and leavethe reader to judge forhimself. It is as if thetruth would be staggering; and well itmight be to some.

W illiam Wallace,the famous Scottish philosopher, and professor of moral philosophy at Merton College, who was one of

the foremost expounders and critics ofHegel’s philosophy and doctrines, wroteseveral years ago regarding Empedoclesas follows: “It was as at once a statesman, prophet, physicist, physician andreformer that he most impressed the

popular imagination. To his contem poraries, as to himself, he seemed morethan a mere man.”

By turning to the Rosicrucian records, however, one may piece togethera very complete—though brief—history

of this wonderful man.Space in this magazine is limited,and it is not appropriate to publish anextended outline of the life and teachings of Empedocles in a public magazine article. Therefore, I will sketchthe most interesting facts and leave toa future time the more complete workin book form.

Empedocles was born at Agrigentumin Sicily in the early part of May (according to our present calendar) in theyear 492 B. C., and not in the year

ference of two years is due to a changein the calendar of years which occurredin the fifth century B. C., and whichis not properly considered by those whowrite popular histories.

The exact day of birth is not set

down as we indicate those things today.But his birth is recorded by his horoscope and this shows that, allowing forthe changes of the calendar, plus certain astronomical changes, he was bomas stated early in May. But we haveone other guide and mis is a celebration held in his honor by the olderEuropean Lodges on May 6 of eachyear. We may safely say then, thatthrough the configurations of some oldscientist or astrologer in the Order, his birthday was May 6, 492 B. C.

The ancient city of Agrigentum isnow the more modem city of Girgenti.It is situated on the south coast ofSicily, fifty-eight miles from Palermo.

The city of Agrigentum was founded by colonists from Gela about 586 to584 B. C. It acquired first positionamong the cities established Dy theGreeks in Sicily.

Its site is one of remarkable beautyand great natu ral strength. To thenorth it spread upon a lofty ridge andin the east there was a great rock once

used as a Temple Altar, today beingknown as the Rock of Athena. Uponthe high plateau surrounding the altarwas a Temple of Zeus.* In fact theoriginal city was walled and within itswalls were many temples devoted tooccult worship—and these temples inruins remain to this day despite thefact that a very large city has grownupon the site. . . .

Tyrants ruled Agrigentum during thelife of Empedocles until 472, when democracy was established.

Empedocles was the second son ofMeton and grandson of another, named Empedocles, who was also a memberof the Order in Olympia and later atGela in Sicily. The family was awealthy one and powerful in whatmight be called political matters. Itwas at the height of its power andmost distinguished at the time of the

birth of Empedocles. His father, Meton,does not seem to have been a memberof the Order, and about the only factknown of him is that through his po

litical and other power he was largelyresponsible for the overthrow of thetyrant Thrasydaeus in 472 whendemocracy was established.

Empedocles, as a child, was educated by his grandfather. Undoubtedly, he

was well grounded in the Rosicrucianteachings, for he was admitted to theOrder during his nineteenth year. Whenhe was twenty-six years old he wasgiven one of the Order’s honors andtitled as a mystic, and it is during histhirtieth to thirty -first year that we findhim performing so many of his seeming miracles. However, until his lastday, when his transition occurredthrough an accident (previously foretold by him) in his sixty-second year,he was to be found in public, doingdeeds of goodness, to the wondermentof that part of the populace that didnot understand.

He twice refused to be the King ofAgrigentum because of his desire tolead a humble life, and he eventuallymoved to Peloponnesus to lead a hum ble, though active life.

Aside from his writings (whichcaused Aristotle to call him the fatherof rhetoric) and his philosophy withwhich I will deal later, he was a livingdemonstration of what a Rosicruciancan accomplish for the benefit of mankind by living the tme Rosicrucianlife.

He walked about in the purple robeand golden girdle of the advanced mystics of the Order, his long hair bound

by a garland, and brazen sandals onhis feet. He carried in his hand a longrod on the upper end of which wasthe Crux Ansata and other symbolsof our Order.

He was tall in stature and the records speak often of his magnetic personality and wonderful, strong kindlyeyes. Certain it is tha t he had developed within him that great power andenergy which all Rosicrucians learn todevelop in the higher degrees, andwhich surges forth from the hands toheal and perform seeming miracles.

Of the well-recorded acts, we findthat Empedocles cured, or removed,

blindness of many forms, by the touchof his finger tips; that he caused con

tagious and eruptive diseases to losetheir fever and to leave bodies, bywhat might be called absent treatment, but which has a different term withRosicrucians. He also controlled various natural elements through the directing of a neutral element, developed inhis body through study and practice ofA.M.O.R.C. teachings. Many contem

porary writers testify to his havingcaused the marshes around Selinus to

become salubrious, to his having deviseda means of laying the destructive windsfrom which his city suffered, to hiscausing oil lights to go out and re-light

by willing it so, and to his doing manyother wonderful things, including therestoration to active, normal life of awoman who had been in a coma formany days.

All this was—and still is—within the province of a Rosicrucian mystic; andit is no wonder that he was madeMaster of the Rosae Crucis Lodge inAgrigentum in his thirty-second year.He continued as Master until his forty-eighth year and among his students inthe Lodge were many well-knownGreek philosophers, poets, and scientists.

His philosophy was given to theworld in a semimystical form withmuch symbolism. Yet his tru ly scientific work as a physicist, contributedmuch to the scientific teachings of theOrder in the few centuries following his transition. In fact, several of theimportant laws of our Order’s ontologyare a result of his researches and experiments—all of which he fully and ablydemonstrated.

In the most popular presentation ofhis philosophy (the scientific work not being permissible in a public magazinegoing to those outside our Order) Em

pedocles held, or expressed his beliefs,as follows:Love and discord alternately holdthe empire over all things. But neither

one is ever entirely absent, however.Originally, when God spoke the word,Love predominated over all things andall the elements composing the presentuniverse formed one sphere, one mass,a unit. Thus, love predominating,

brought and mainta ined unity . Sincethen discord, the opposite of Love, hasgained more power, and separation ofthe elements has resulted. Strife in theworld is due to the combined actionof Love and discord in their determination to reign alone permanently. ButLove, always present to some degree,tempers discord, while discord modifies Love in its time of temporary predominance sufficiently to make destruction aid construction. Thus we have aworld of contrasts, of good and evil, ofwar and peace, of joy and sadness, ofLove and hatred. Love will trium phagain when it has gradually forced discord to expend itself in maintaining itsside against Love. Love must conquerfor it is infinite, therefore unlimited,while discord is finite, therefore limitedin both power and duration.

If there were more like Empedoclestoday—and there could be—then—what? Are we ready for such doctrinesand such practices as made Empedoclesfamous in Sicily, and which cause the people there, to this day, to celebratehis name at certain times? The timewill come when we will have ourown American members, many of them,advanced as far as was Empedocles,and ready to teach and PRACTICE.

* There has been considerable discussion for many years regarding this Temple and its so- called Brazen Bull. Some of the world’s greatest writers and scientists have argued on the point in question, which, after all. they have not been able to settle. It is because the mythical tyrant Phalaris had naught to do

with this Temple. Rosicrucians in the fourth degree or higher will understand why the Altar and Temple were built on a high rock in the East, and for what the Altar was used.

WHY WORRY

By R o d m a n R. C l a y s o n , Grand Master ovv m a n y of your fearsand worries have come to pass? How often havew o r ry a n d a n x i e t y b ro ug h t you m isery ?Probably everyone i smore or less guilty ofletting his mind becomeimbued with a certain

amount of worry; and worry is directly related to fear. From fear and worrymore than anything else, the average

person is held back and prevented fromadvancement in life. He is alwaysthreatened by things he thinks willhappen. He is constantly retarded byhis fear that he will not be able toovercome or meet the conditions whichhe believes will arise. This sort of fearand hesitancy affects not only logicalreasoning, but also logical action.

Worry and fear have contributed tothe ill-health of too many persons. Menhave taken their own lives as the resultof worry. Many have resorted to alcohol and narcotics because of worry.Extreme fear and other negative emotions have a harmful effect upon theentire physical body. Intense fear, withits distressing emotions of anxiety, willstop the digestive processes. The emotions of worry, jealousy, hate, and fear,all call upon the reserve supply of thevital secretions of the adrenal glands;and if the emotional stress is continued,the glands become exhausted. It isnow well known that prolonged emo

tional stress contributes to excessiveheart action, cancer, diabetes, and manyother diseases, and tends to shorten thespan of life.

Since we recognize the harm thatthese emotions may cause, it is vitallyimportant that a change be broughtabout in our way of thinking. Mentaladjustment is necessary. A proper positive mental attitude must be cultivated. Cheerfulness, for the most part,should dominate the consciousness.Whether cheerful or otherwise, ourthoughts and general mental attitudehave a definite effect upon our healthand well-being. When the thoughts arecheerful and positive, the body is welland healthy, and the various organsand glands function normally. Such isnot the case when our mind is imbuedwith worry and fear. People who worry are very negative in their approachto life and its problems.

It is natural for us to have a certainamount of instinctive fear; however,

control must be practiced. Fear is theresult of our dwelling upon the unknown, dwelling upon questionable possibilities. As an emotion, fear is underthe control of the sympathetic nervoussystem, and therefore is not completelywithin the direction of the reasoningmind. It is quite natura l, for instance,to be startled in the darkness by anunfamiliar sound. Instinctively youare on your guard because the reactionis related to the instinct of self-preser

vation. The normal person, however, because of his experience and knowledge, makes use of the fear urge to ad just himself to unusual situations.

Fear becomes a problem when it is

assigned to many conditions which affect us and when it is so dwelt upon by the mind that a constant state ofanxiety and worry exists. Anxiety andworry are conditions of fear—fearwhich concerns the possibility thatsomething either is oris not going to hap

pen which will or willnot be for our best interests and well-being.

We all have hadfears as to the possiblereactions of other peo-le to the things we

o and say. At sometime or another nearlyeveryone has entertained the fear of losing his job or becomingill, of not having sufficient funds to meetnecessary demands, ornot being able to accomplish a certain ob jective, or that he may

not be able to getalong with certain peo ple. If these fears areentertained in themind without beingdismissed by reason,an unhealthy condition is established inthe mind and body. Itis not inferred thatsuch important factorsof life are to be ignored, but a truesense of value should be placed uponthem with a corresponding mentaladjustment.

R e s p o n s e t o S u g g e s t i o n

If we have such a problem, and reason it out logically, we may be able totake those steps which will offset the

possibility of that which is feared evermaterializing. We must never entertain worry and fear to the extent thatthe emotional condition drains constantly upon our mental and physicalstrength. Sometimes the things which

appear to be the greatest obstacles atthe present time are not really obstacles if we do not fear them.

There is no doubt that we are affected by the nature of our thoughts.

A time-worn psychological illustrationwhich has been told repeatedly is atruth, for we all have seen it manifestin someone we know or in ourselves

personally. The example just referredto is that on a particular morning you

may arise and meetthe world with cheerfulness and feel in thevery best of health.On your way to workyou meet a friend orneighbor who, afterthe morning greeting,looks at your face intently and proceeds tosay, “Have you beenill lately? It seems tome that you are notlooking as well as youdid. Your face seemsto be a little drawn.”

bor that he is mistaken, that you are feel

ing your very best.The abnormal reaction, the reaction ofthe habitual worrier,is to accept the suggestion and begin toquestion yourself, “Iwonder if I do look alittle tired? Maybe Ihaven’t been feeling aswell as I should. If it

shows in my face, I’m certainly notfeeling as well as I should.” The suggestion continues to pervade the consciousness. Anxiety is aroused, andshortly thereafter you decide that perhaps you had better go home becauseyou are not feeling your best. Youranxious thoughts have done this to you.

As another example of a physicalresponse to our mental attitude, it issuggested that you fold your armsacross your chest so that the fingers arehid beneath the arms. In your mindselect a finger, perhaps the index fingerof the left hand. Concentrate upon it;

think of nothing else but the finger.Very soon the finger will feel warm,and commence to tingle. You will not

be conscious of the remainder of thathand. Thus we have another exampleof what our thoughts in concentration

will do.Whether our thoughts are positiveor negative, they will have corresponding response or effect on our bodilyorgans, glands, and nervous system.

Negative thoughts will affect only yourself; they will not meet with a responsein another individual. As an exampleof this, suppose that your next-doorneighbor arises at the crack of dawnon a Sunday morning when you desireto sleep late. Your neighbor decides tomow the lawn, and the noise of his

lawn mower awakens you. You are resentful and angered, and wish that hewould be more considerate. Thoughtsof this kind will have no effect uponyour neighbor, and they will not causehim to cease mowing the lawn. Youremotions, however, will become soaroused and agitated that, if you arenot careful, your whole mental attitude throughout the day will be affected by the negative thoughts whichyou entertained at the time of yourearly morning awakening.

H e a G l o o m C h a s e r

Someone once said that we must begloom chasers. We must not permitgloomy thoughts to pervade the mind.We must refuse to be intimidated bytendencies to fear and have worry. Ineradicating our fears and controllingour emotions we truly become gloomchasers. We do not mean to say thatwe should be Pollyanna-like and smileat everything that goes wrong: wemust admit reality; we must not deceive ourselves. But to continue todoubt that conditions will improve,that our achievements will ever berealized, to feel that which we wouldachieve will never be attained, is aform of self-deception that cannot continue very long without playing havocwith mental and physical health.

We must make full use of the faculties with which we have been endowed,and of our knowledge and experience,and our abilities. They will fortify us,give us confidence, faith, and strength.

and help to bring success and happinessin our lives.

As previously stated, fear is not theresult of the known, but of the unknown. Oftentimes when we associatethe unknown with what we know, we produce a condition that makes us susceptible to fear. What we know isassociated with comprehension and understanding; and fear is never relatedto understanding. Worry and fearcome about from what we imagine mayor could occur. This feeling about theunknown is a wrong inference concerning something that we do notknow.

Since the things we fear for themost part do not and cannot actuallyexist, to dwell upon them is to inhibitour consciousness, our actions, and ourfreedom by nonexistent things and conditions. On the other hand, anxietyabout things which do exist should beremoved by gaining proper understanding and knowledge of the things aboutwhich the anxiety is felt.

Fear, worry, and anxiety can become a complex in a person. Th at theyare not necessary to our well-beingshould be recognized, and adjustment

brought about in our thinking. A positive or negative state of mind attractsto us the things which are similar tothat upon which the mind dwells. Aman who holds the idea that good fortune is and will be his is going to livea more prosperous and contented life.By cultivating and dwelling upon positive thoughts, negative and imaginativefancies are neutralized and destroyed.

Everything in nature is magnetic;that is, it seems to be imbued with

powers of attraction. You may attractto yourself conditions or things that are

predominant in your mind and heart.It is not what you wish or desire, butwhat and how you feel within yourself that attracts to you certain conditions. It is not the intellect or strongwill or desire that draws things to you;it is that upon which you dwell inyour thoughts.

There is a saying among mysticsthat we are responsible for what weare and what we will be. This is atruism. The power of attraction within

s a l w a y s seems to be thecase, the session of Rose-Croix University just concluded was the best yet.The enrollment from farand near indicates thecontinued appreciationamong Rosicrucians ofthe importance of the

university in the Order’s over-all planof operation. Its three colleges, the Fineand Mystic Arts, Mundane and ArcaneScience, and Humanities, supplementin perfect fashion the regular degreestudies and offer the progressive Rosicrucian the opportunity of enlarginghis viewpoint and at the same timemaking it more practical. The fact thatthe student’s activity in any one termis limited to study in only one collegemeans that his efforts are sufficientlyconcentrated to assure some solid accomplishment while holding out the prospect of working his way aroundthe triangle of colleges in true mysticfashion, with time for rest and reflection in between.

This year proved once more, however, that all the benefits of the University are not confined to classroom

periods. Extracurricular activities were particularly rich and rewarding. Thespecial convocations held in the Su

preme Temple for University students,the informal gatherings on the campusitself between class sessions, the weekend excursions to nearby points of interest, the folk-dance parties, even theCalifornia sunshine, all played their

part in making for well-rounded growthand enjoyment.

New faces were found among thefaculty this year, the greatest changes being in the College of Humanitieswhere Frater Arthur C. Piepenbrinkof Chicago took the classes in Psychol

ogy, so ably taught in the past two

sessions by Soror Ruth Smythe of PawPaw, Michigan. Frater Paul O. Plenck-ner’s popular course in “Mind, Magic,and Mysticism,” a study in comparativereligion, was given again but withoutFrater Plenckner, since his health atthat time did not permit his coming.This course was conducted by FraterJoel Disher of the Literary ResearchDepartment.

In the College of Mundane and Arcane Science, the work formerly presented by Frater Erwin Watermeyerwas under the capable direction ofFrater Lester L. Libby, now head ofthe Technical Department at Rosicrucian Park.

Among the new elective courses added to this year’s curriculum, an especialfavorite was the one on “Library Methods,” offered by Soror Edla Wahlin,Librarian of the Rosicrucian ResearchLibrary. Popular as this course waswith students, it found even greaterfavor with the instructors since it resulted in a more efficient handling ofoutside assignments.

Another new elective course whichdrew heavy enrollment was that in“Music Therapy” given by SororKatherine Williams, whose work inthis field has attracted wide attentionon the Pacific Coast.

Mr. Earle Lewis’ art courses wereonce more in every way the most colorful—and as usual the most attractivesince easels were always in evidenceand each neophyte artist was surrounded by a group of critics and admirers.

The Founder’s Day exercises were asever dignified and impressive, as grateful students and faculty met to paytheir respect to the memory of Dr. II.Spencer Lewis, the First Imperator ofthe Order in its present cycle, whoseforesight made the Rose-Croix Univer

The award annually made the student showing the most benefit fromRCU contact was this year presentedto John C. Kersey, who in the judgment of the faculty met the requirements of the award. Many names

were presented and the faculty’s choicewas not easily made. This award,known as the II. Spencer Lewis Award,was established several years ago by amember of the Order who prefers to remain anonymous. It consists of a checkfor $100.

No session of the University seemscomplete without a closing banquetafter the tension is off. The matter ofmerrymaking is left to the student bodyofficers but always they are aided andabetted by certain faculty members.

This year’s affair was refreshingly newwhile departing a little from the accepted procedure of the past. Undoubtedly, it had to be seen to be appreciated.

The University’s most overworkedfaculty member who was at the sametime the most uncomplaining and jovialwas the Dean, Jay R. McCullough, whoduring the year serves as Curator ofthe Rosicrucian Egyptian and OrientalMuseum. The sacred cowbell and otherrelics have been returned to their casesand the students of the 1950 session of

RCU have added another choice itemto their storehouse of memory. V A V

University students and Conventionvisitors were treated to an unusual dis play in the Exhibition Gallery of theRosicrucian Egyptian and Oriental Museum during July. For two weeks therewere exhibited some thirty-nine water-color reproductions of mural decorationsfrom the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas at Tun-Huang, some forty-fivedays’ journey by camel-back to west

of Peiping. Here, centuries ago, a Buddhist community made itself comfortable in caves dug into the cliffs. Becauseof its remote situation, the communitywas lost sight of and forgotten until rediscovered some twenty-five years ago by the British Explorer, Sir Aurel Stein.

During the recent war, Shao FangSheng went there while her husband,an engineer, was engaged on the BurmaRoad. From the walls and ceilings ofthe frescoed Buddhist Chapels, shemade faithful copies in water color of

the most typical and dramatic subjectsfound. These reproductions were theones exhibited in the Museum duringthe first two weeks of July. The nexttwo weeks were devoted to a displayof her own original landscapes, flowers

and figure subjects, some of which wererecently drawn in the United States.She is now teaching Chinese art atFlorida Southern College, Lakeland,Florida.

Both she and her husband came tothe United States at the invitation ofFrank Lloyd Wright and studied in hisWisconsin and Arizona schools.

The exhibition is a traveling one,sponsored by the American Federationof Arts, Washington, D. C.

us so many ancient revelations of

truths, were burned with the gardensand the humble cottages of theselearned men.

In that same year, groups of Culdeeswere recorded in Iceland, wearing theirwhite robes; carrying bells, books, andcrosiers; flying banners from poles, andchanting as they marched. A portionof the ancient Order had found refugeon the island of Papey, off the Icelandiccoast. Some of the old Culdee bells andother historical relics of the Order are preserved to this day in the Danish National Museum at Copenhagen.

But safety was short-lived. In 874their old oppressors, the Vikings, cameraging down from Norway. They uprooted the Culdees from their scholarlyretreat on the little island and, for thesecond time in a century, drove theminto exile.

The Culdees, skilled navigators, sailedaway in strong, wooden ships, builtwith their own hands. The sagas donot tell where they sailed. But thelater discovery in America of Irishspeaking people (including the men inthe white robes) by Viking descendants,leaves an inference that can hardly

be challenged.Based upon searching comparison of

the Irish with the Norse traditions, theconclusion is that the Culdees set outon no blind voyage. It appears probablethat these ancient “masters” knew theirdestination was America, and thatAmerica was known to the adventurous,sea-faring Celts centuries before theVikings became aware of Ireland theGreat.

Note that Ari Thorgilsson speaks of

the Celtic American colony as a place“whither vessels formerly sailed fromIreland.” The very phrase suggests acontinuous traffic between Ireland andAmerica at some time prior to theeleventh century wiien the Norse historian lived. Probably, that traffic wasalso disrupted by the Viking invasions.Conceivably, records of the connection

between Old Ireland and Ireland theGreat may have perished in the plunderof the monasteries by the pillagers.

Let it be emphasized, too, that

Thorgilsson the Icelander would have been conversant with happenings inIreland, as any American of averageintelligence is today conversant withevents in Great Britain. Constant contact was maintained between Irelandand Iceland either through trading orfighting. Thousands of Irish captivesupon being brought to Iceland intermarried with the native stock and lefta Celtic strain wiiich persists to thisday in the old Norse republic. We canw^ell believe that the Icelandic chronicler knew whereof he spoke when hementioned the sailing of vessels fromthe older Ireland to the younger Irelandacross the waters.

But even more impressive is the great body of Irish legend that tells of the“Blessed Isles” or “The EnchantedIsles,” lying to the West in the Atlantic. Tir na rCoige (The Land ofYouth) is located in the West acrossthe Atlantic. So is its counterpart, Hy-Brasail. King Arthur, of the Welshhero cycle, fights his last battle atLand’s End, the extreme Western point

of Britain. Then mysterious beingscarry him to the legendary island ofAvalon, farther west.

Partholan, the folk deity from whomall Celts claimed descent, came to Ireland from the West and from a legendary land that lay across the Atlantic.His father was Sera which, translated,means West. Partholan is described as being the King of the Underworld. Isthis an allusion to his having been aking of an underground civilization ofthe caves here in America? Or was hesome king of Atlantis or of Lemuriawho found refuge with a remnant of his

people in the caverns of our continentafter his own had sunk beneath thewaves?

Did the Atlanteans or the Lemuriansreach Ireland via America, bringingwith them the ancient truths of theCuldees? Were the mysterious CliffDwellers, who built an undergroundsociety on our soil, in the same line ofdescent from one of the old continents?

Our information, at present, does notsupply us the answers. It might be

pointed out, though, that the Irish references to the West could not haveapplied to any other country in Europe.For Ireland is the farthest West country of Europe. Knowing this gives usa new approach to the legends whichdeal with actual voyages undertaken

by Celts across the Atlantic.The Irish monk, Berinthus, may

have reached America in the sixth century, for it was he who told Brandan ofthe Delicious Isle, lying to the West,where other priests of their countryhad already settled. He spurred Bran-dan’s interest to the point where bothof them set out together and sailedwestward t ill they reached the DeliciousIsle. They also visited a larger islandcalled The Promised Isle of the Saints, where many apples grew.

On their return, Brandan consultedan abbot named Enda, regarded as thegreatest authority on the Western Isles.Enda told them of Hy-Brasail whichsome writers have related to Atlantis.Later, he embarked with seventeencompanions, some of whom may have

been Culdees. The voyagers sailedsouthwest for more than forty days andnights until they reached a land that

reputable geographers have since identified as Mexico.

On one island, they found Christianmonks whose patrons were St. Patrickand St. Ailbee. By an interesting coincidence, the Spanish conquistadors, ninecenturies later, were annoyed by theChristian resemblances that they foundin the Aztec religion of Mexico. Moreover, ancient cup-and-ring markings observed on stones in Mexico bear strikingsimilarities to similar emblems foundon Celtic megalithic monuments inScotland, Ireland, and the French province of Brittany, also a Celtic land.

S p i r i t u a l P i o n e e r s

Did the Culdees send colonies toAmerica earlier than the ninth century?Did these original groups give sanctuaryto their brethren who fled first fromIreland, then from Iceland? We mightknow the answers if again vandals hadnot destroyed priceless records. For theconquistadors, who knew no lore butgold, burned the great Aztec Libraryin Mexico City to the ground. And thenative priests, who might have beensuch valuable sources of information,were massacred for fear of the influencethat they had on their people.

Perry believes that “it is not possibleto attribute the stone houses” at NorthSalem to St. Brandan who remainedseven years in America. “But,” theauthor adds, “he is known to have builta monastery in Ireland with stone beehive huts for his novitiates, similar tothose at North Salem, Upton, andHopkinton.”

We do not know what eventuallyhappened to the Culdees and their gallant saga in America. Perry advancesthe supposition that those of NorthSalem may have, out of fear of theVikings or out of boredom with isolation, taken ship to Ireland or “somehospitable shore.” They must have beenshipwrecked,” he continues, “and lostto all human ken forever.”

I think tha t still another explanationsuggests itself—an explanation by analogy. We know that the Norse inhabitants of Greenland finally assimilatedwith the native Eskimos when chaoticconditions in Europe caused them tolose touch with their mother countries.

The same thing may have happened tothe Culdees and their Irish-speakingfollowers.

Already at the time that the Vikingsdiscovered Ireland the Great, contact

had been lost by the Irish colonistswith Ireland. Otherwise, Thorgilssonwould not have dated the sailing ofships from old Ireland in the past tense.Moreover, The Vikings were still ravaging and disrupting the Celtic lands. TheIrish chieftain, Brian Boru, was to fightthe decisive battle with the Norsemenin 1014, during the same historical period as the finding of Ireland theGreat.

In the next century, old Ireland wasto lose its independence to England; the

Celtic church which had revered theCuldees was to capitulate finally toRome. With the loss of religious autonomy, the Culdees ultimately disappearedfrom history.

The American Culdees were probablythe last survivors of their Order. Theymay have lingered on in the caves forgenerations after the severance of contact with the old country. They probably continued to teach “the three characteristics of God: complete life, com

plete knowledge, and complete power,”

a teaching that is valid whether it betaught as Druidism or as Christianity.But, necessarily, the separation with

Ireland would be fatal, for the streamwould have lost its source. Gradually,all traces of Irish nationality would belost as the Culdee followers intermarried with Indians whom the Norsecalled the Skraellings. The Irish language naturally would be expected todisappear as the ancestral ties becamemore remote with each generation;

however, a writer for the Occult Review has noted the existence of Celtic fragments in the language of the Mexicanand the Peruvian Indians. Possibly,the gray-eyed Virginia Indians, telling

the seventeenth-century English traveler, Lawson, of white ancestors “whotalked in books, may have been hearkening back to that “tribe of the saints,”the Culdees.

Possibly, too, some of the Culdeeceremonies survived, in greatly alteredform, in the rituals of certain Indianreligious societies. From them, the Indians may have derived the concept ofthe One God whom the red men calledThe Great Spirit.

The curtain rang down on the Cul

dees at a time when Europe was lapsinginto the night of the Middle Ages,when occult teachers of the old truthswould be butchered on stupid, brutalcharges of “heresy” and “witchcraft.”During that dark inferno of the humanspirit, all contact between America andEurope would be lost for centuries. Thememory of America as a known-landwould survive only in the closely-guarded fraternities of the seers and mystics.

But with the rediscovery of Americaand the general awakening that fol

lowed, the ancient fraternities begananew their work of harmonizing menand women with the Cosmic. Researchas carried on in the traditions andspirit of the Rosicrucians, incorporatingthe best of the ancient teachings, tendsto revive the memory of the Culdeesand of other saints and sages like them.

They were American pioneers—theCuldees. And pioneers to a supremedegree because they were pioneers ofthe advancing spirit of man.

behind some of themiracles of our technical age, is the pur

pose of the new sciencemuseum of the Rosicrucian Order whichwas formally openedon July 2. There will be revealed the lawsand principles of phenomena such as tner-mal radiation, sound,electricity and magnetism which constitute concealed truthsfor the average personeven though in the

practical application ofhis everydayances he is incontact with them.Each series of exhibits will demonstrate one or more of these fundamental laws of various well-known but notgenerally understood physical sciences.

The Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, isthe only organization of an esotericnature which devotes itself assiduouslyto mystical principles and at the sametime conscientiously tries to show howthese same laws and principles alsomanifest in the so-called material phenomena of our world; in other words, proofs are given that the physical sciences are related to the mystical realm.

Not only at the present time but fornumerous past centuries the Order hasmaintained laboratories, research work,and study of such subjects as the structure of matter, the nature of the atom,

the propagation of waves, and the spectrum of energy, that is the interrelationship of the Cosmic keyboard —disclosing the progressive manifestations of

physical phenomena. The axiom “asabove, so below” has been the motivating urge behind the ancient alchemistas well as behind those who have carried on the work to present times.

In 1936, or fourteen years ago, thelate Imperator, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis,designed and constructed the first planetarium that was entirely American-

made. The few plane-tariums existing in theUnited States at thattime were importations from Germany.Dr. Lewis spent considerable time in astronomical researchand in the engineering of the equipment,which was built inour own laboratoriesand shops. The pur

pose of the planetarium here at Rosicrucian Park, San Jose,California, was togive, even the casualvisitor, a better appreciation of the physicalmysteries of ouruniverse and theCosmic roles of heav

enly bodies.The simulated reproduction of the

heavens, the stars, the movements ofthe planets, the sun, and the moon,through the employment of an ingenious mechanical device, was indeed aneducational contribution to the community, and especially to those whowere interested in physical laws and

phenomena. It also tended to disabusethe minds of the public who were notRosicrucian members and who mighthave entertained the impression thatthe Order was not interested in practical things and in natural laws in a

physical sense. Now AMORC is going a step farther.

The original planetarium, that is, theinstrument constructed by Dr. Lewis,

because of years of constant use, neededto be reconstructed. A new Spitz planetarium has been installed to replacethe worn original instrument, in amodern air-conditioned amphitheatrecalled The Theatre of the Sky.

Since planetariums are now morenumerous, it was thought best not tolimit the science display exclusively toa planetarium. Therefore, we havealso established a science museum inthe same building. The RosicrucianScience Museum contains a number of

display cases, modem in appearance.The exhibits are generally arranged inan order according to the spectrum ofenergy, that is, a progression from the

phenomena of the lower vibratory ratesupward in the scale of manifestation.The instruments and devices are automatically operated.

The visitor steps before a case inwhich he sees devices and a printed

placard explaining the law to be demonstrated. Then, he presses a buttonand automatically the device functions,causing a very positive auditory orvisual (or both) demonstration of thatnatu ral law. Graphically, he is taughtin a few seconds, that which is im portant to him to understand and

which he would otherwise, most likely,not be able to demonstrate to himself.A typical exhibit is the model of the

longitudinal wave in the section devoted to the phenomenon of sound. Inthis exhibit a number of magnetic rodsare suspended, pendulum fashion, froman overhead support. All the pendulums have the same period of swingor vibration, thus being in resonancewith each other. When the leftmost pendulum is set into vibration, by

means of an electromagnet operated bya push button, its vibration is progressively transferred to the series ofother pendulums. This produces a slow-motion display of a longitudinal waveof sound in air. The bottom tips of the pendulums are imagined to representindividual molecules of air.

Other exhibits include models demonstrating magnetic fields of force, the

principle of inducing electromotive power in a coil, as generally utilized

in electric motors, infrared or thermalradiations, models of optical principles,and so forth.

At the present time there is but anucleus of the intended exhibits; manymore are waiting to be designed and built. There is no equipment whichmay be purchased on the open marketto demonstrate all of the natural laws.As the years go by, the exhibits willcontinue to be steadily increased.Eventually there will be exhibits deal

ing with some of the most advanced

scientific theories as well as those ofthe known principles. Included laterwill be abstract exhibits on man’s conscious relationship to the universe.These will be designed by a staff officer of the Rosicrucian Order and constructed in the shop of the organization. They will illustrate man’s perception and conception of the realitiesof his existence.

We are happy to announce that several large nationally-known industrialorganizations will, in the near future,contribute exhibits of their productsmade to demonstrate the utilitarian ap

plication of physical laws. The director of the science museum, Lester L.Libby, engineer and physicist, has been

advised that various such exhibits arenow in preparation and are expectedthis fall.

The museum has the distinction of being the only museum in the Westdevoted exclusively to exhibits of the

physical sciences. Other science museums on the Pacific Coast confinetheir fimctions to natural sciences, zoological and botanical displays. Twoof the most prominent science museumsin the nation are located in Chicago

and New York City.The Rosicrucian Science Museum

will be open Sundays and Wednesdaysfrom 1 to 5 p. m. Later in the year,it is planned that it will be open daily.The natural science exhibits are freeto the public. A separate nominal admission charge is made for the planetarium lecture and demonstration inThe Theatre of the Sky.

In conclusion we wish to informAMORC members who live too far, tomake it possible to visit the new museum, that these exhibits will alsocome to add to their knowledge. As aresult of designing and experimentationin connection with this museum, copious notes were made of certain principles employed. From these, ideashave been born which will lead to theconstruction of portable demonstration-equipment to be sent, in the future,to Rosicrucian lodges and chapters.From this enterprise have also come

like, to be added to monographs whichevery AMORC member, no matterwhere he resides, will receive.

The necessary research involved inthe undertaking of establishing a science museum has inspired material for

future articles which will set forth therelationship of certain physical laws toeveryday living. These informativearticles will appear in the pages ofthe Rosicrucian Digest and in variousspecial publications of the Order.

us, which is our thinking, will bring tous the very things of which we haveconsciousness, whether they are theills which we worry about or the success and happiness which we desire tohave. If we get the idea from ourthinking, reading, or conversation, thatwe are looking for trouble, sickness,misery, and enemies, we are sure to attract these things to us. If we live infear of contracting a serious disease, orthink that we have a distressing diseased condition, the intelligent thing todo is to see a physician and immediately face the truth. Perhaps we will bedisarmed at once by learning that thereis nothing wrong in the physical body.On the other hand, if there is a prevailing distressing condition, we can,

by following proper advice in regardto diet, exercise, relaxation, and sleep,do that which is best for us. By assuming a cheerful attitude, we directlyassist Nature in instituting re-creativehealing forces of Nature within the

body which will result in the regainingof normal health.

P o s i t i v e A t t i t u d e s

Truly fear is to be feared. It isdeadly. We should recognize this anddrive from our minds the thoughts

which tend to attract conditions whichare calculated to pull us down intochaotic living. The emotions of fear,worry, anxiety, like weeds, should beuprooted and cast aside. Perhaps thereis more truth than we realize in theBiblical phrase: “As ye sow, so shallye reap.” What are we sowing by ouranxiety, worry, and the fears whichwe entertain? What are we drawingto ourselves? If we are guilty of letting fear and worry imbue our thoughts,we should recognize the fact and begin

to do away with such negative mentalconditions. Our mind should be imbuedwith harmonious creative thoughts anddesires. If possible, we should try toget at the source, or root, of the causeof our anxiety; and generally we willfind that it has no real basis orfoundation.

Once we have eradicated fear fromthe mind, we will have a proud feelingof having conquered a major obstacle.Admit the mistakes and errors of the past, profit by them, and be guidedaccordingly so that they are not re

peated. Mistakes give us necessary ex perience, and the knowledge to help usface the problems of today and the

possibilities of tomorrow.Throughout the ages, superstition

has done a tremendous amount of harm.With the knowledge which we havetoday most of us have risen above su

perstitious beliefs. However, we shouldnot laugh at people who are superstitious nor should we think them stupid.If we will face the facts, we will realizethat fear and worry are just as muchnonentities as is superstition. These arethe things to be removed from thethinking mind and to be replaced withconstructive thoughts gained fromlearning more and more about life,

ourselves, and cause and effect.Therefore, be constructive in yourthinking; do not let your imaginationrun riot; have confidence in yourself;create opportunities to be with thosewho are real thinkers. Be careful ofthe informative reading which youselect. Augment your present education with serious study. Extend yourhorizons to new interests, knowledge,and understanding, so that there will

be no room in your mind for such athing as worry.
