INTRODUCTORY:INTRODUCTORY: The Christian calendar, which is also known as
Gregorian calendar or Western calendar, ismostly used by people around the world today.
Christian calendar was first introduced in 1582by Pope Gregory XIII. Hence, the wordGregorian was named after him.
The calendar is developed as a way to correctthe Julian calendar.

Many years back, Julian calendar was usedinstead of the Christian calendar.
Julian calendar:
There was a minor error and t his causes t he Julian calendar to beinaccurate
Due to a calculation error, leap years occurred once in every t h ree years during t he first 36 years after t he Julian calendar was introduced.
Augustus t hen corrected t he error by c hanging leap years to occurevery four years but many extra days had been added to t he Julian years

Aloysius Lilius was t he first to suggest t he c hanges to t he Juliancalendar
Then, Pope Gregory XIII adopted t he C h ristian calendar inagreement wit h t he instructions from t he Council of T rent
The C h ristian calendar was decided on 24 February 1582
The C h ristian year was taken as 365 days

W hen of t he extra day was added every four year, oneextra day will be formed
Hence, leap years occurred every four years w hic h followed t he Julian calendar custom
The extra day was moved to t he 29t h of February
T en days were taken out from t he Julian calendar suc h t hatt he following Thursday, 4t h October 1982 would be Friday,
15t h October so as to bring t he Julian calendar back in line
From t hen onwards, t he reformed calendar, called as t heC h ristian calendar, would be used

I feel that people should be aware of the origins of the calendarbecause our forefathers had went through thick and thin to developbetter calendars for us. We should not take things for granted. Weshould appreciate our forefathers works because if it were not fortheir effort, better calendars would not be developed and I think wewill still have problems with our dates. Calendars are not easy to becreated. They take up time, patience and effort for them to bedeveloped. It is not only the effort of one person but is the effort of many people who contributes to the development of calendars.
Calculations of the time taken of the solar year will also be neededto be made and I feel that this was the most challenging part for ourforefathers. They did not give up in finding the answer and in theend they still managed to get it. Lastly, I think that calendars cannever be perfect as there will still be some limitations.
