Martin & Doris Rosen established the Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition in 1987. For the past 28 years, this nationally recognized competition has served as a highlight and point of pride for Appalachian State University’s summer arts festival, An Appalachian Summer Festival, and has brought a remarkable array of contemporary sculpture to Boone, North Carolina.

To mark the 29th season of this important program in the summer of 2015, the Rosen Sculptural Invitational will feature work curated by the Turchin Center’s curatorial staff in honor of Martin and Doris Rosen. A selection of artists who have participated in past Rosen exhibitions have been invited to submit new work for display on the Appalachian campus. The invitational format allows the Turchin Center to work with artists whose sculpture was especially significant and meaningful to the Rosen Family.

On the occasion of the Rosen’s 50th wedding anniversary in October 1999, their children established the Martin and Doris Rosen Scholarship to assist rising junior or senior art majors at Appalachian State. The continued support and generosity of the Rosen Family has also made possible the 29th Rosen Sculpture Invitational, which promises a fascinating exploration into the world of contemporary sculpture!

Martin Lawrence Rosen passed away after a brief illness in Miami Beach on April 18, 2014. Martin was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 14, 1925. He was predeceased by his parents Nathan and Carrie Rosen and his brother Arnold P. Rosen. Martin is survived by his three children, Nancy Rosenblatt (Chuck), David Rosen, and Debbie Davidson (Don) and eight grand-daughters, Amy, Barbara, Emily, Madeleine, Allison, Abagail, Rachel and Gillian. Martin is also survived by his brother Richard Rosen of Boca Raton, FL. At the age of 11 Martin and his family moved to Miami, FL. After graduating from Miami High School he attended Georgia, Tech, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Following service in the U.S. Navy, Martin met his future bride and settled in Norfolk, VA. to work with his father-in-law Jacob Brody in the construction industry. For over fifty years he was active in the construction business, having built and developed many neighborhoods in Tidewater. Martin was a past president of the Tidewater Builders Association and a founding member of Temple Israel. He also served on numerous boards including the Jewish Community Center of Tidewater and the United Jewish Federation.

Doris Brody Rosen passed away in her home in Miami Beach on September 27, 2014. Doris was born in Jamaica, NY, the daughter of the late Jacob & Esther Brody. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years Martin L. Rosen, as well as her sister Eleanor Rashkind and her brother Alan Brody. Doris is survived by her children Nancy Rosenblatt (Chuck), David Rosen (Michelle), & Debbie Davidson (Don), and granddaughters Amy, Barbara, Emily (David), Madeleine, Allison, Abagail, Rachel & Gillian. Doris was a woman behind the scenes who made things happen. She had a lifelong interest in the arts, education and her gardens. She served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Center of Tidewater for over two decades, having served in numerous capacities, including Vice-President of Programming. In Miami she served on the Miami Opera Guild and the Miami Salon Group, to name but a few. In the mountains of North Carolina Doris served on the Board of Trustees of Lees- McRae College. At Appalachian State University she and her late husband established the Rosen Sculpture Walk, a nationally recognized juried competition, and The Martin & Doris Rosen Summer Symposium at the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies.
