THIS WEEK’S NEWS

Weekly News Round

Rosebery News Dear Parents and Carers It is one of the Rosebery highlights of the year! Practically the whole school

gathered each lunchtime this week in the Sports Hall to watch, support and

cheer every tutor group in Years 7, 8 and 9 who performed in the House

Cheerleading Competition. This year the standard was higher than ever; the

choreography, the gymnastic flips and lifts, the synchronicity and the costumes

(especially the mascots!) were all hugely impressive and it was a very difficult

decision to determine the eventual overall winners, 9PY. The event was

organised by Y11 students as part of their JSLA. There were also a number of

moving and engaging performances in the LAMDA Showcase on Wednesday

evening; there are larger numbers of students than ever pursuing their love of

music and drama at Rosebery, which is great to see.

This week we have had a real focus on supporting students to consider their options for study after school and to increase their awareness of career opportunities, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A number of Year 12 students enjoyed a very useful day at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, to hear about the application and interview process, Year 11 students have engaged in a Unilever Careers Workshop and our Year 8 students all joined a STEM workshop, led by Surrey University.

It was a pleasure to welcome Year 11 parents to meet with teachers on Thursday evening. I have been impressed by the number of students engaging in revision and booster sessions at lunchtime and after school since the start of term.

The English Department enjoyed a successful trip with a number of these students to Poetry Live in London, which focused on upskilling students’ examination responses.

Finally this week, we welcome Ms Jacob to the Computing Department, who has

replaced Mrs Onwukwe, and Miss Nasir who joins the Maths Department.

Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen @RoseberyHT

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT—KEY STAGE 3

Other than regularly encouraging your child to read, it is important to supplement your child's learning beyond the English classroom. Below are some good suggestions:

Year 7 are studying An Introduction to Shakespeare and the Gothic Unit

1) Read a short story: We recommend - A Tell Tale Heart, Dracula, and Frankenstein. Write a creative piece using gothic conventions and practice descriptive writing using gothic pictures provided in class

2) Watch abridged versions, ideally of the Shakespeare plays you have been studying in class. CBBC has some good ones. Research into William Shakespeare's life. Watch a live performance of Shakespeare at the theatre.

Year 8 are studying poetry and a Shakespearean play

1) Revise poetic terminology

2) Read other poems about relationships

3) Watch a version of the play ,Twelfth Night, or A Mid Summer Night's Dream and find a summary of these plays

4) Watch a live performance of Shakespeare at the theatre.

Year 9 are studying Romeo and Juliet

1) Buy a revision guide to supplement understanding of the text studied in class

2) Watch a version of the play being studied

3) Learn quotations that are needed for the end of unit assessment

4) Watch a live performance of Shakespeare at the theatre

Well done to those students who are attending the Year 7 Literacy shots intervention on a Wednesday morning. The students have been revising the use of capital letters, full stops and apostrophes.

Well done to the 10 students, listed right, who have completed the most Science questions on Educake in the past week.

Educake has questions from Biology, Chemistry and Physics for all year groups. It is a great way of revising for the recall questions in preparation for tests.

Students can be set homework on Educake and can also go online at any time to set themselves quizzes. These students have completed questions from class and independently.

Well done!

Year 8 Assessment—week commencing 25 February

Year 7 Assessment—week commencing 4 March

The assessment will be one paper, non-calculator and 55 minutes long. It will be completed during one of the students Maths lessons during the week stated above.

The topics being assessed will be Data Handling, Constructions and Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (which the students have been studying this term), along with some questions from Term 1: Number, Algebra and Shape and Measure.

Students will be given a revision list closer to the assessments, however they should use their Maths books, hegartymaths, previous assessments and homework to start revising for this assessment.

Students should also attend the KS3 support club (Thursday lunchtimes in M12 from 1:25pm to 1:55pm), the Maths Hub support (Monday lunchtime in M15, 1:30pm to 2:00pm) if they need help on a particular topic or problem, or they can just attend and complete some of the tasks available on the day.

All Maths equipment will be needed for this assessment (pencil, pen, ruler, compass, protractor, eraser and sharper). Equipment will not be provided by the class teacher. It is the responsibility of the students to be organised for their assessment.

Please contact your child’s class teacher or myself with any further inquiries.

On Tuesday 29 January Rosebery School was honoured to be selected to host a Business Workshop by Unilever, a global consumer goods company. The workshop consisted of a three-hour course which helped us gain key employability skills such as team-building, organisation, creativity and communication.

To begin with we had a brief introduction about who Unilever are, what they do and their main beliefs. As a class, we were very impressed by their aims of “health and wellbeing”, “the environment” and “enhanced livelihoods”. In particular we were pleased to see that they are embracing opportunities for women in the company by expanding skills and allowing promotion in the workplace – 47% of managers at Unilever are female! In addition, we learnt that everyday 2.5 billion Unilever products are used or consumed – whether that’s Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Dove skincare products or Magnum chocolate, to name but a few!

We were then sorted out into groups and began our journey towards creating our own business idea. This involved choosing certain roles within a business – like a sales executive or an R&D scientist. The individual groups then embarked on brainstorming ideas for products. The ideas that were later presented were lip balms, hair dye, shampoo and more. Once agreed, the groups would go on to think about how their product linked in with the 4 Ps of the marketing mix (price, product, place, promotion). This allowed us to explore key concepts like business plans, aims and objectives, marketing, logistics, sustainability of products and more. The workshop ended with each group pitching for their products, where three people (based on our group, it was the managing director, sales executive and marketing director) sold the idea to five Unilever employees ,who later had to decide which was the best product worthy of belonging in the Unilever brand portfolio.

Our group won the competition with our idea of lip balm trios. We had thought about everything from ingredients to pricing (which would have provided us with a huge profit margin per unit being 81.6%). Our sales executive and marketing manager worked closely together to design a fairly minimalistic packaging whilst the supply chain executive was busy in deciding what the most suitable place would be to have our warehouses, factories and offices. Combining all the skills of every member of the group allowed us to be open to a variety of ideas, meaning we were efficient with timing and hence, produced a winning product.

Despite winning (which made this experience a lot sweeter), it was a very practical way to demonstrate our knowledge in Business Studies to the real world. We now know the role each person must do on a day-to-day basis and how crucial it is for a business to recruit the most suitable person to fill a vacancy.

In the concluding session, Unilever also addressed other methods of education post GCSEs; namely apprenticeships. Unilever offer apprenticeships in research and development, business technology and supply chain management. The skills taught in apprenticeships are transferable across different companies. If you would like to explore more on the apprenticeships Unilever offers, visit their website on www.unilever.co.uk/careers/apprenticeships/
