Rider Remarks By Tim Hazlett, RHS Principal
Sometimes I am amazed at `how much happens at Roosevelt High School. In addition to the
school day where over 2,000 students come to learn, eat, socialize, grow, struggle and succeed there is
hardly a single night or time of the year when RHS is not hosting some sort of school or community
event, not to mention after school practices. It is certainly a vibrant community, the activities that take
place are the most visible element of our school to the public, and the support is greatly appreciated.
Thinking of this made me wonder if the public understands the immense amount of time, effort and
commitment it takes on the part of the people who work at RHS to continually strive for excellence and
strategically plan for that improvement.
Roosevelt High School functions as it does due to the commitment of every person who works here. Several
different work groups play a vital role. They are Child Nutrition Staff, Custodial Staff, Education Assistants, Clerical
Staff, Education Specialists, Counselors, Teachers, and Administration. The groups all work together to create the
community that is RHS. It may seem like an impossible task to get that many different groups of people to work
cohesively, but since we have an incredible collection of people who put students first and realize that everything we do
is about student learning, we are able to accomplish this through teamwork.
The culture of collaboration and teamwork is the backbone of how we function at RHS. There are several
traditional teams that meet weekly such as the attendance team, student assistance team, teacher collaborative teams,
and departmental teams. In addition to these, we have created a Core School Improvement Team that determines the
strategic plan for each year and identifies areas of focus for our community. This core team is supported by teams that
are led by staff members who are passionate about a particular area identified as a part of the school improvement plan.
This model of shared leadership is exciting and continues to help build a strong community that is focused on
improvement, excellent instruction and student learning. The school improvement teams are the graduation cohort
team, A.C.T. preparation team, alternative education/innovations team, data/collaboration team, 9th grade and
transitions team, technology team, literacy team, staff and community engagement team, effective grading, assessment
and collaboration team, and cultural awareness team. All of this takes place in addition to teachers working within
their department and collaborative teams to continue to improve instruction and focus on student learning.
As you can see, it takes a lot to run a school of this size, but it really boils down to the efforts of incredibly
talented and committed people who focus on student learning and believe in teamwork. We are very proud of our
school. The events and public performances that are visible by the public at RHS are a major part of our school. Rest
assured that all that the public sees is not a result of happenstance, but a part of a collective effort to provide the best
educational experience possible for your children through a complex and purposeful plan! March is an exciting time
when winter activities are concluding and competition revs up. In fact, recently the Girls Bowling Team won the state
championship and Carter Lohr and Kobe Kortan won individual wresting state championships! Congratulations to you
all. We are Roosevelt. We are One!
Cultural Responsiveness By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent
Walk through the halls of any of our schools and you will notice an eclectic mix of students. The
tall students, the still-growing students, the out-going, the shy, the athletes, the musicians, the artists,
the book lovers. The Sioux Falls School District is a diverse community of learners. And, while
diversity can be defined in many ways, conversations nearly always bring us back to the topic of
race.
Each year for the last 20 years, the Sioux Falls School District has gradually become more reflective of our
world. One third of the 24,000 students we serve – 8,000 students – identify as a race other than Caucasian. Many
have moved to South Dakota to escape war and other atrocities in their own country. Some have come with their
families from other parts of the United States to enjoy the safety of Sioux Falls and the success of our business
climate. This has provided the District with an opportunity to build a school culture that celebrates differences
while realizing that, as humans, we all bring equal value to our community.
Yet, up until this point, our efforts “develop strategies to enhance a culturally responsive workforce” have
fallen short. Now, that specific priority statement is embedded in the School Climate and Culture section of the
District’s Strategic Plan.
I’m proud to say our team is already making strides in this area. The Sioux Falls School District has
identified a “Think Tank” – or group of school leaders - who will participate in a summer conference on diversity
thanks to a partnership with the School of Education at the University of South Dakota. Other professional
development opportunities are also in the works. We hope to hire quality administrators, teachers, education
assistants and other professionals with diverse backgrounds to serve in our schools.
The Dean of the USD School of Education, Dr. Donald Easton-Brooks, has pledged his full support to
come alongside the District as we meet with our own diverse students and encourage them to consider a career in
education. These meetings are already underway. Students interested in becoming educators will travel to
Vermillion this spring to tour the USD campus and visit with professors and students. A high school class to
develop future teachers is also a real possibility.
Our community is changing. And, the public schools are choosing to change with it. We are excited to see
where these efforts lead us.

RHS Theatre Presents
ALL MY SONS
The Arthur Miller classic All My Sons is a riveting drama that takes place in the post World War II era. Played against the backdrop of white-picket fenced small town America, All My Sons tells the story of neighbors, the Kellers and the Deevers, and how the trials of war ripped their families apart. Joe Keller and Steve Deever ran a company together making airplane parts during the war. After defective parts were shipped out by their factory, causing the deaths of twenty-one pilots, Steve was sent to prison while Joe was exonerated. The impact of this, along with the death of a Keller son, escalates throughout the show.
The students performing this powerful drama are Alex Cook, Lucas Crane, Chris Dupic, Quincy Hanzen, Joey Hofer, Tristan Hoffmeyer, Amy Kummer, Lexy Ronning, and Sarah Smith.
The technical crew consists of Tristen Bly, Brady
Boerema, Shannon Hofer-Pottala, Jayci Holsing,
Brooklyn Jongeling, Brayden Krikke, Brittney Lewis,
Karen Morales, Shaylah Motley, Katelyn Privett, Iryna
Sachek, Sophie Seaton, Evan Sjovold, Faith
Triebwasser, and Andy Wang.
All My Sons will be performed in the RHS Auditorium
on March 2, 3, and 4 at 7:00 pm with a special 2:00
pm public matinee on March 4. Tickets are $5 and
can be purchased at the door.

We are hearing a great deal about fake news. Since
students will be researching the Internet for the rest of
their lives, understanding how to spot fake news and
how to evaluate websites, becomes more and more
important in their ability to use sources and
information.
Students know how to find any number of topics on
the Internet, but determining the validity of a website,
is more difficult. As a part of researching, Roosevelt
freshmen learn that understanding authority, accuracy,
currency, and objectivity and how those factors relate
to websites, is the basis for judging the reliability of a
website. Several of the sites are humorous and the
students easily spot those. Many websites appear to be
valid, but without some evaluation techniques, anyone
can be easily fooled. Through the practice of locating,
interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating information,
students find that they have better control of their
research.

worth writing.”
