Rider Remarks By Tim Hazlett, RHS Principal

As school started this past Tuesday, the most commonly asked question seems to be "How many

students do you/we have this year?" The answer is actually yet to be determined and takes a little

while to accurately measure as people enroll and others may not be attending RHS this year and I

will try to identify that number for you in the future. While there are certainly issues that arise

with student population from a logistical standpoint, the fact of the matter is that once we get

started, it doesn't matter because our goal is for each and every student to learn at high levels and

we are committed to ensuring that each student learns and is cared for as a valuable member of

our community.

The most important factor of student success in school is the classroom teacher and their belief in their

students ability to succeed. We have all challenged ourselves to ensure that students are learning the essential

standards and made a commitment to early intervention if there are signs of academic difficulties. In fact, we

have teams of teachers working interdependently to help where help is needed and develop the best practices

that lead to student learning at high levels. I am confident that we will take strides as a school again this year to

reach all of our goals for your children. We have an exceptional faculty and staff that are all in this together to

help students learn. What we need from you is trust, support and a commitment to making sure your children

attend school on a regular basis. If we have them here and in class, we have the expertise to help each student

succeed.

Our fundamental purpose as a school is to ensure that each student learns at high levels and that we

intervene when necessary. We ask your help and support in achieving this goal because even though that seems

like a logical goal for a school, focusing on that can be difficult when there are so many other aspects to a

students experience in high school. We strongly encourage students to be involved in at least one activity and

work hard to develop a community that is inclusive and supportive of all students. We are excited about the

start of a new school year and look forward to all it brings. We do not have any days off from school this

month which will allow us to get a great start to the academic year. We look forward to seeing you at the events

and once again we are celebrating our community by providing every student and staff member a "We are

Roosevelt, We are One!" t-shirt to wear with pride. The shirts serve as a reminder that we are all in this

together and each person is a valuable member of this community based on learning. We would like to thank

TC Referee and the Roosevelt Booster Club for providing these shirts for our students and staff once again this

Welcome back to another great year in the Sioux Falls School District! We are eager to welcome the 24,000 smiling faces of our students and to watch our playgrounds and parking lots coming alive with the cheerful voices of students. A new school year is a new opportunity to improve academically, socially, and emotionally. That support is available every day at school. However, research shows as many as 7.5 million students across the country miss nearly a month of school every year.

These absences can lead to poor academic performance and create challenges that carry over into adult life. That is why the Sioux Falls School District is declaring September as Attendance Awareness Month.

For some, the absenteeism trend starts surprisingly early - as early as kindergarten - and continues through high school. National research shows one in 10 kindergarten and first-grade students are chronically absent, meaning they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days of instruction because of excused and unexcused absences. In the Sioux Falls School District, any number of absences over ten (10) is considered excessive.

Chronic absence is not just about truancy or willfully skipping school. Instead, children stay home because of chronic illness, unreliable transportation, housing issues, bullying or simply because their parents do not understand how quickly absences add up—and affect school performance.

Chronic absenteeism especially affects students living in poverty. Consistent academic instruction is the key to helping them break the cycle. Children who are chronically absent in kindergarten and first grade are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, and students who do not read well by that critical juncture are more likely to struggle in school. They are also more likely to be chronically absent in later years, since they never developed good attendance habits.

While we work hard to prevent it, absenteeism can’t solely be viewed as an administrative matter. We use a pyramid of interventions to support children facing attendance challenges. However, schools cannot do this work alone. We are calling on the entire community to help. Partnerships with health care providers, mental health agencies, transportation groups and others are already in the works. In order to make a difference, we need employers, faith-based groups, parents, and neighbors to encourage school attendance. Parents can build a habit of good attendance by sticking to reasonable bedtimes and other routines and avoiding vacations while school is in session. Teachers will reinforce these messages regularly. Community members can step forward to mentor children who have attendance issues and encourage them to see the lifetime benefits of being in school every day. No Food Orders Delivered to RHS This is a reminder to all parents/guardians and students that you and your child are not allowed to

bring in food from outside vendors for lunch. We participate in the Federal lunch program which

stipulates that we may not have food in the lunch room from outside vendors. Thank you very

RHS Homecoming Week

October 2-6, 2017

This year's theme will be revealed on Monday,

September 25. Representatives for the homecoming

court will also be announced.

Coronation: Monday, October 2 at 7 PM (No

admission fee) and Talent Show will follow

at 8 PM ($5 admission fee) Students that have

purchased a *homecoming wristband will have

priority seating.

Homecoming Friday, October 6: Normal schedule

will be adjusted to allow for an afternoon of

activities, pizza feed, and pep rally. No school lunch

will be served, but students may purchase a ticket for

the pizza feed for $5 in ad room.

Football game: 5 PM at Howard Wood Field

Riderfest: 8-11 PM at RHS Riderfest includes the

dance, and many games/activities to celebrate being a

Rider ($5 admission)

*Homecoming wristbands will be sold during the

lunch hours for $13 ($2 savings) September 26-29,

and delivered to each student during ad room on

Monday, October 2. The wristband covers admission

fees for the talent show, pizza feed, and

Riderfest. Students were able to purchase a

wristband at Rider Charge day, also.

Best Buddies International

Best Buddies International is the world's largest

organization dedicated to ending the social, physical,

and economic isolation of the 200 million people

with intellectual and developmental

disabilities (IDD). It was founded by Anthony K.

Shriver in 1989. The purpose of this program is to

help people with IDD form meaningful friendships

with peers, and feel valued by society.

Best Buddies is coming to RHS this fall! If you are

interested in being a Peer Buddy (student without

IDD), or in being a Best Buddy (student with IDD),

please email Michele.Jensen@k12.sd.us, or stop by

A207 (next to the library stairs), and pick up an

application the first week of school.

There will be an informational meeting on Monday,

September 11, at 6 PM in the Little Theater if you

would like to learn more about the program.

The Centers for Disease Control and Preventions recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a

seasonal flu vaccine. Vaccination is especially important for children younger than 5 years of age and children of

any age with a long-term health condition like asthma, diabetes and heart disease. Students should visit with their

primary health care provider regarding getting the vaccine.

In addition to seasonal flu vaccinations, the District is asking parents/guardians to remind their children about

basic prevention efforts. We can reduce the spread of all illnesses by practicing proper hygiene, such as:

* Covering the nose and mouth with tissue when coughing or sneezing;

* Washing hands frequently with soap and warm water, or

* Using hand sanitizer, if soap and water are not available.

Current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advise that students who exhibit flu-like

symptoms - including a fever of 100 degrees or more, with a cough or sore throat - should stay home from school

for at least 24 hours after they are fever-free, without the use of fever-reducing medication.

Have a senior? Here are some things your son or daughter should be doing to make the senior year a little smoother. Now is the time to put together resumes/activity lists to submit with applications to post-high schools and scholarships. It’s also great to give to people who will write letters of recommendation. Be sure to include community service experiences and all activities in and out of school. Also think about the ACT Prep Class taught at RHS by RHS teachers. It’s a good way to prepare for that all important tests. Seniors should make appointments to see their counselors in the 1st Quarter of the year regarding their postsecondary plans!

The Counseling Office has also joined Twitter! Follow us @SFRCounseling. This is a great way for parents and students to stay connected with all the happenings at Roosevelt!

Changing Classes

Students don’t forget you have the first five school days to request a schedule change. You must fill out a form in the counseling office and return it with a parent signature along with additional information. It will then be reviewed for approval. If the requests is approved the schedule change will be attempted. Be prepared for other classes to be shifted around because once class changed often has a domino effect on others. Once this process is done (within 48 hours or less) you will be notified through your first period teacher if your request was not approved, approved but did not work out, or given a new schedule to follow with your changes. You must follow your current schedule until you get a new schedule in your hand. See your counselor if you have questions. Change Forms are available in the Counseling Office now and can be returned before the start of school to ensure best class selection.

Career and College Readiness at Roosevelt High School

Research documents for an individual to be successful and happy within a career the job needs to match with an individual’s interest, aptitude and values. RHS offers a computer-based program to assist students in finding out their interests, aptitudes and values. This program is called "Career Cruising" and may be accessed from any computer that connects to the Internet. To access Career Cruising go to http://sdmylife.com/ and then click on the “To Access Your Student Portfolio Click Here” box on the top right. If you do not know your log-in information please come to the counseling office.

How to Achieve Good Grades

Roosevelt High School is committed to helping our students be successful. With the joint effort between the student, parent/guardian and our school programs we feel we can obtain this goal. In addition, we feel there is a direct connection between a student’s attendance and their grades. A student that comes to school on a regular basis and completes their homework provides the best opportunity for them to find success. In addition to attendance and homework some additional resources for students and parents are:

● Once again tutoring will be offered after school. The program is called “Homework Help” and it will be held Monday through Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 pm (except holidays or early releases). Students should listen to the announcements to find out when it starts and in what room. No need to register just come with your assignments and be ready to work.

● Parents may access Infinite Campus, which is a tool that allows parent(s) and guardian(s) to access their student’s grades, assignments, and attendance on-line. In addition, it allows parents to e-mail their student’s teachers directly. The web address for this tool is www.sf.k12.sd.us . Click on the Parent/Student box and then “Infinite Campus” at the top left of the page. If you do not know your log-in information and have not received anything in the mail a couple weeks after school starts please call the counseling office at 362-2868.

Roosevelt ACT Prep Seminar

The ACT Prep Seminar is designed to help students become familiar with the ACT. Students will examine question

styles and samples for all four areas of the ACT Test (reading, English, math, and science) as well as sample

prompts for the writing portion. Test taking skills and strategies will be addressed as well.

October Session

October 1 – Pre-test 1-5 PM

October 8 – English/Writing 3-6 PM

October 10 – Reading 6-8 PM

October 15 – Science 3-5 PM

October 17 – Math 6-8 PM

October 22 – Post-test 1-5 PM

Students will enter through the Main Doors for class. Room is A139/140.

The class may be cancelled in case of low registration.

Cost: $100 which includes an ACT Prep book. Class fees are due upon registration.

Course Expectations: Attendance and tardies will be recorded and reported to parents. All students are expected

to arrive on time and participate in course activities and discussions. No refunds will be given for students who fail

to attend or who are removed due to behavior or other circumstances. In case of unforeseen school events, the

dates may be adjusted as necessary. All Roosevelt rules and guidelines including, but not limited to, use of

technology, eating/drinking, and misuse of property will be enforced.

The first and most important step to becoming a National Merit Scholar is by taking the PSAT during October of your Junior year.

RHS SENIOR CLASS PARTY

SUNDAY June 3rd, 2018

1. Student registration is $30. Forms and payment must be submitted no later than April 30, 2018. Tickets will not be available at

the door. NO REFUNDS. Any questions call 605-366-2298.

2. The doors will open at 10:00 pm on Sunday June 3 and will close at 11:00pm. Please provide advance notice if you know you

must arrive later or leave early. Student must be accompanied and signed in/out by a parent/guardian if arriving late or leaving

early. Parent or guardians will be called if a student who purchased a ticket has not checked in by 11:00pm.

3. Each student MUST wear the unaltered class party T-shirt as their ticket to for admission to the event; and are required to show

a picture ID (driver’s license, school ID, etc.) to obtain entry to the party.

4. No food or beverages are allowed. Food and beverages will be available throughout the night free of charge.

5. Do not bring personal items such as purses, billfolds, cameras into the school. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY LOST

OR STOLEN ARTICLES. No money will be required for the activities or food/beverages at the party.

6. A checkroom will be used to store coats and pocket contents with a shopping bag provided for each senior’s belongings (including

any prizes that may be received throughout the night.)

7. Please be considerate of all decorations and leave them intact, as they will be used by upcoming senior classes.

8. School policies will be in effect for the duration of the party. There will be zero tolerance for any possession of weapons, tobacco,

alcohol, or other mood altering substances; any violation will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

9. Students are encouraged to go directly home following the conclusion of the party.

10. Volunteer medical professional will be available throughout the entire event should any health problems arise.

11. WAIVER OF LIABILITY: No member of the volunteer of the Senior Class Committee or Roosevelt High School and the Sioux Falls

School District and its respective officers and employees shall be liable for any personal injury, loss or damage to person or

property that may occur to me or my personal property as a result of my voluntary attendance at the RHS Senior Class Party

whether occurring before, during or after such event. Admission to the event constitutes a release of all liability for negligence or
