Rider Remarks By Tim Hazlett, RHS Principal

There is a lot going on in April at RHS! The beginning of spring activities and multiple

student and staff recognition events highlight the calendar. The fourth and final quarter of the

school year is upon us and that means we are all working hard to finish strong and help all

students do their best. We are also headed into a time of academic testing and planning for the

upcoming school year.

As many of you know, we are experiencing significant growth in the number of students

who attend RHS. We will continue to grow next year, but through strategic scheduling and

planning, we will be able to accommodate all of our students and continue to provide a high-level educational

experience in a caring environment. It makes me extremely proud that we have offered some flexible

scheduling and utilization of classrooms at the C.T.E. academy to help offset the potential overcrowding issue

in our building. After reviewing the registrations and crunching the numbers, we found out that we have made

enough accommodations to build a schedule that will work for all our students! The creativity and flexibility of

our staff with the needs of students in mind is a testament to their dedication to ensuring that all our students

will receive the quality education that they deserve.

We will be participating in our state mandated testing for our 11th graders this month. We will take the

state science test on April 3rd, and take the Smarter Balanced tests on the April 9th, 10th and 11th. For the first

time, we will also me testing our 12th graders on the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) on Friday

April 12th. We will be running altered schedules on each of these days. Please encourage your child to do their

best on all these tests!

As we look forward to spring, we are continually committed to helping all students do their best and

make progress towards graduation! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. We are a phone

call away and are committed to helping each child succeed. We have had a very good year so far at RHS and

look forward to helping each student finish strong and achieve to the best of their abilities. We are Roosevelt!

Supporting Those Who Support Students By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent

Many of us have heard the phrase “Real heroes don’t wear capes.” If you consider that

phrase while walking through any one of our schools, you know this to be the absolute truth.

Real heroes in the Sioux Falls School District wear custodial uniforms, aprons in the kitchen,

and certainly more than one “hat” if their job title is education assistant or clerical!

Every school day, it takes more than 3,500 employees to welcome the 24,000 students

and their parents who count on us to deliver a high-quality education. While about 1,900 of

those employees are classroom teachers, the other 2,600 fill important support roles. These are

the unsung heroes who make our schools safe, warm, and welcoming learning environments

where our students can do their best. These support people are the quiet do-ers who take on the necessary tasks

without fanfare. They build relationships with students. Offer a smile at just the right time. Give fist bumps

and high-fives.

While most of us notice freshly waxed hallways, emptied garbage cans, and neatly stacked chairs in the

cafeteria, the job of a custodian is so much more. They must be handy men/women, knowing how to fix a

jammed towel dispenser in the bathroom one minute, sharpening a blade on a mower the next, just before

trouble-shooting the cause of short in a microphone cord.

Child nutrition staff members aren’t your basic kitchen help. Last month, they gathered to do some

taste-testing in search of new foods their young customers might enjoy. Strict federal guidelines on protein,

whole grains, and sugar levels need to be “weighed” when designing the breakfast and lunch menus. These

staff are meticulous and take their role in fueling students with healthy, yet good-tasting foods, very seriously.

Education assistants support students and teachers both in and out of the classroom. In some cases, EAs

are personal assistants for students who have physical needs. In some cases, they are an extra set of hands in a

large classroom. They re-shelve books in the library. They keep the lines flowing, the talking at a “dull roar,”

and the tables clean between shifts in the lunchroom.

And, if you need the answer to almost any question, everyone knows you go to the office for help! In

addition to answering phones, taking lunch count, depositing money from book orders, creating a newsletter,

ordering supplies, checking-in visitors, fetching ice packs for recess mishaps, our clerical are also trained to

check blood sugar levels and administer medication to students with those needs.

If you’re not already exhausted by just reading about why these support people are so critical to our

mission “to educate and prepare each student to succeed in a changing world,” spend a little time taking note of

their work the next time you are at school. We think you will agree that “real heroes don’t wear capes!”

RHS Library…. https://libcat.sf.k12.sd.us

Library hours: 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Not only is April School Library Month, but also

National Library Week is celebrated April 7 through

13. The theme for National Library Week is

“Libraries = Strong Communities”. The theme

reminds the public that libraries of all types serve as

change agents that strengthen communities by

supporting community engagement and providing

services that connect closely with patrons’ needs.

More than ever school libraries and public libraries

are working to appeal to their patrons. At the RHS

Library our patrons are both staff members and

teenagers. It is vital that libraries work to make their

patrons feel comfortable and welcome, especially the

teenagers. Libraries that teens visit now will have an

impact on the feelings of that individual toward

libraries for the rest of their lives. The RHS Library

can help teens discover a new and exciting world

where they can take advantage of free access to

books, eBooks, periodicals, and computers. It’s a

place to gather in the morning, during lunch periods

and after school. It’s a place to get homework done

and a place to get a recommendation for a great book.

It’s a place to put together a research paper and a

place to sit and read.

“Libraries allow children to ask questions about the

world and find the answers. The wonderful thing is

that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to

learning are always open.” Laura Bush

RHS Flight Club and The Volaré Project

The Volaré Project and RHS Flight Club (drone club) have some exciting news about upcoming events and opportunities for students! The Flight Club has had a lot of exposure in the news and from a variety of events in the last couple of years. We’ve gathered enough interest to offer job shadow and internship opportunities in the drone industry. We’ve partnered with three local drone businesses to provide students “real-world” experiences with drones. Contact Alyssia Salguero for more information.

There are several events for RHS Flight Club coming up. Our club offers workshops on safety, science, and flight skills. We visit schools in our district, schools outside our district, and area organizations. In partnership with Sanford PROMISE, our FC members bring to you “Teen Science Cafe”. This event is designed for middle school students interested in learning more about drones and will provide opportunities to fly. The event will be May 2nd at Sanford Research.

Recently, Mr. Hofflander visited with Keloland Living about drone technology. It was a great opportunity to share about Flight Club and what students are experiencing here at Roosevelt! Watch now: https://youtu.be/HpazwTMFcH8 on YouTube. Our website is your gateway to learning more about what you can do with drones and how to get involved as a student, use drones in the classroom as a teacher, or request services. Find out more information about RHS Flight Club and how other schools can start their own drone club by visiting www.sufudrones.com today. Spread the word!
