Types of Roofs The most common type of roof is a pitch
roof also called traditional roofs There are many types of pitch roofs that
can be constructed Here are some of there finished forms
Different types of roofs Gable Hip Intersecting Shed or lean to
Gable This type of roof is the most common
one used It is simple to make and very cost
effective and good for the economy.
Hipped The hip roof has four sloping sides. It is
the strongest type of roof because it is braced by four hip rafters.
Very similar to the Gable roof, most commonly used in areas with high winds.
Designed to prevent the wind from pulling it off
Intersecting The intersecting roof consists of a gable
and valley, or hip and valley. The valley is formed where the two different sections of the roof meet, generally at a 90° angle.
Shed or Lean to The shed roof, or lean-to, is a roof
having only one slope, or pitch. It is used where large buildings are framed under one roof, where hasty or temporary construction is needed, and where sheds or additions are erected.
Roof Structures There are two main types of structures
for a traditional roof. Single roofs Double roofs
Single roofs Rafters of single roofs do not require any intermediate
support. This type of roof has a number of limitations. It can only be used for small spans. If greater spans are required, larger roof sections would be needed
They can be put into three groups Couple roof – These can be used for building with a clear
span of not greater than 3m and pitches less than 40º. Collar roof – These can be used for buildings with a clear
span not exceeding 4mm. Collar roof – These can be used for buildings with a clear
span not exceeding 4mm.
Double roof A double roof is a roof whose rafters are
at such a length that they require some sort of intermediate support. This support is usually a beam, which is secured under the rafters at the halfway point between the ridge and the wall plate.
