La scoperta della città e del palazzo di Batrawy e gli straordinari rinvenimenti effettuati al suo interno rivelano al mondo una città dimenticata che illumina una fase storica apparentemente remota e lontana, ma il cui studio unisce il nostro paese e la Giordania oggi. I ritrovamenti di Batrawy sono una delle imprese archeologiche della Sapienza portate a segno da una nuova generazione di archeologi, che, nel solco di una tradizione insuperabile, continua nell’eccellenza della ricerca. È con orgoglio e soddisfazione che ammiro questi risultati avendo sostenuto dal principio le esplorazioni e gli scavi condotti dal gruppo di giovani ricercatori e studenti che costituisce, sotto la guida di Lorenzo Nigro, la Missione archeologica in Palestina & Giordania della Sapienza. La rapidità della pubblicazione è una delle caratteristiche più encomiabili di questi studiosi, che condividono in primis con i Paesi che li ospitano, e poi con il pubblico anche dei non addetti ai lavori, le notizie scientifiche che emergono dagli scavi. La nostra Università, rinnovata nella struttura e nel funzionamento, produce frutti in linea con una politica di grande eccellenza, di cui questa scoperta è un esempio tangibile. The discovery of the city and of the palace of Batrawy, and the extraordinary findings retrieved in it, reveal to the world a forgotten city that sheds light on an apparently remote and distant historical period, the study of which, nonetheless, connects our Country and Jordan nowadays. The findings of Batrawy is one of the archaeological enterprises of Sapienza University carried out by a new generation of archaeologists, who, following up an unrivalled tradition, continue in the excellence of research. I admire with pride and pleasure these results, as I supported since the beginning the explorations and excavations carried out by the group of young researchers and students, constituting, under the direction of Lorenzo Nigro, the Archaeological Expedition to Palestine & Jordan of Sapienza University. The promptness of publication is one of the most commendable characteristics of these scholars, who share first of all with the hosting countries, and then also with the public, the scientific information emerging from the excavations. Our University, renovated in its structure and functioning, produces outcomes descending from a policy of great excellence, of which this discovery is a tangible example.

0. Premessa Il presente volume inaugura una serie parallela della collana ROSAPAT, dedicata a divulgare scientificamente i risultati delle ricerche condotte dalla Missione archeologica in Palestina & Giordania dell’Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, costituita da monografie a colori (ROSAPAT/Colour Monographs) pensate per un pubblico più vasto di quello specialistico e, pertanto, destinate ad illustrare attraverso immagini a colori e testi bilingui italiano/inglese gli aspetti più interessanti delle scoperte effettuate negli scavi di Khirbet al-Batrawy in Giordania e Tell es-Sultan/antica Gerico in Palestina. L’idea di questo volume discende dalle emozionanti scoperte della campagna del maggio scorso a Khirbet al-Batrawy e dal desiderio di condividere quei momenti così impegnativi e gratificanti, e anche di presentare una breve sintesi dei risultati di sei anni di scavi, non sempre facili, durante i quali si è data la preminenza alla pubblicazione dei dati ottenuti (i rapporti di scavo dettagliati su Khirbet al-Batrawy sono stati pubblicati sino alla terza campagna [2007], mentre il volume sulla quarta e quinta campagna [2008-2009] è in stampa), anche attraverso la diffusione immediata di fastreports nel sito internet: www.lasapienzatojordan.it (i resoconti preliminari degli scavi sono stati pubblicati regolarmente nelle riviste scientifiche Munjazat e ADAJ, mentre presentazioni delle scoperte sono state fatte nelle X e XI ICHAJ di Washington e Parigi e nei convegni ICAANE di Madrid, Roma e Londra). Le ripresa delle attività di ricerca della Sapienza in Giordania è stata resa possibile dall’ospitalità e dalla generosa collaborazione del Dipartimento delle Antichità che, prima sotto la direzione di Fawwaz al Khraysheh, ora con quella di Ziad al-Saad, ha sempre facilitato, sostenuto e stimolato le attività della missione, attraverso l’azione del Direttore del Servizio Scavi, Khalil Hamdan, del Direttore dell’ufficio di Zarqa, Khaled Jbour, e degli ispettori Romil Gharib e Ahmed Shorma. Durante gli scavi abbiamo potuto condividere i risultati delle scoperte con alcuni colleghi, Zeidan Kafafi, Barbara Porter, Jean- François Salles e Frank Braemer, che ci hanno sempre seguito con i loro saggi consigli. Il Ministero degli Affari Esteri con l’Ufficio V della DGPCC e l’Ambasciata d’Italia ad Amman (S.E. l’Ambasciatore Francesco Fransoni) hanno sostenuto e facilitato le attività della Missione. Le asce di rame scoperte nel Palazzo di Batrawy sono state restaurate e sottoposte ad analisi presso l’Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro di Roma (v. § 6), grazie alla cortese disponibilità della Direttrice, Dr. Arch. Premise This volume inaugurates a kindred series of ROSAPAT, aimed at the divulgation of results of research activities carried out by the Archaeological Expedition to Palestine & Jordan of Rome Sapienza University. Such a series consists of monographs with colour pictures (ROSAPAT/Colour Monographs) addressed to a wider audience than the specialist one and, therefore, intended to illustrate through images and bilingual English/Italian texts the most interesting features of the discoveries done during the excavations at Khirbet al-Batrawy in Jordan and Tell es-Sultan/ancient Jericho in Palestine. The idea of this volume follows the amazing discoveries of the last season at Khirbet al-Batrawy, and the will to share those so hard but gratifying moments, and also to offer a brief summary of six years of excavations, not always easy, during which the final goal of our team work has been a valid scientific publication of finds (detailed excavation reports on Khirbet al-Batrawy were published until the third season [2007], while the volume on the fourth and fifth seasons [2008-2009] is in press), also by means of the immediate release of fastreports in the website: www.lasapienzatojordan.it (preliminary reports on the excavations are regularly published in the scientific journals Munjazat and ADAJ, while presentations of the discoveries were made during the X and XI ICHAJ in Washington and Paris, and the congresses ICAANE in Madrid, Rome and London). The resumption of Sapienza University research activities in Jordan was made possible by the generous hospitality and collaboration of the Department of Antiquities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which, first under the direction of Fawwaz al-Khraysheh, now with that of Ziad al-Saad, has always facilitated, supported and stimulated the works of the Expedition, also thanks to the support of the Head of the Excavations Sector, Khalil Hamdan, the Head of the Zarqa Office, Khaled Jbour, and the inspectors Romil Gharib and Ahmed Shorma. During the excavations, we were able to share the results of the discoveries with some colleagues, Zeidan Kafafi, Barbara Porter, Jean-François Salles and Frank Braemer, who always followed us with their wise advices. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the Office V of the DGPCC, and the Embassy of Italy in Amman (H.E. the Ambassador Francesco Fransoni) have supported and facilitated the work of the Expedition. The copper axes have been restored and analyzed by the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro of Rome (see § 6), thanks to the kind courtesy of its Director Dr. Arch. Gisella Capponi.
