Grillenburg, a Biedermeier hunting lodge, and its annexes are situated south-west of Dresden, capital of the Federal State of Saxony, on an island in the Tharandter Wald forest . Its name is derived from the fact that Prince Elector Augustus hoped to forget his worries (“Grillen” in German) there .The building complex, surrounded by three lakes on the outskirts of the Grillenburg Glade, is enclosed by a wall built in the 16th century . Besides the palace, it comprises the neorenaissance guesthouse, an adjoining bowling alley, the gardener‘s cottage and the Kennels building (Hunde-zwingerhaus) . Access to the surrounding state roads is provided in the north via a picturesque sandstone bridge built in 1730 by the famous architect Pöppelmann, and in the south-west through the Colmnitzer Tor gate . The Saxon State Heritage Department has declared the 20,002 square metre complex a cultural monument including its soil as an archaeological monument .

Grillenburg – Part of Kurort Hartha and the City of Tharandt

View north-east over the Lower Lake from the hunting lodge tower

Grillenburg Glade is located on the Saxon Way of St . James pilgrimage route, created in the mid-12th century, and on the Sacred Way between Bohemia and the Bishop Benno‘s grave in Meissen . Both ways follow the same route in the Tharandter Wald forest . The House of Wettin also used this route as a royal or gentleman‘s road to travel between Dresden and Freiberg . Grillen-burg hunting lodge, whose origins can be traced back to the 13th century, was built at a junction of the Saxon St . James’ Way with other historic roads which led through the Tharandter Wald forest .A district of Tharandt, Grillenburg is part of the town of Kurort Hartha in the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterz-gebirge administrative region . The district, with a popu-lation of roughly 110, is located between Dresden and Freiberg on the present-day “Silver Road in Saxony

and Bohemia” holiday route . Besides the natural forest swimming pool, leisure facilities in Grillenburg in-clude the Forest Experience and the youth recreation centre . The bathing pool is a natural outdoor forest pool with a small gravel beach, which is located behind the hunting lodge on the palace island . There is also a barbecue area and a playground, as well as a kiosk selling food and drinks etc . to bathers . The palace island is surrounded by two other lakes . With roughly 21,000 square metres of water, the Lower Lake is also home to a boat rental company (gondeln- in-grillenburg .de) . Like the Upper Lake, with its beauti-fully situated boathouse, it is used for fishing . The building complex’ overall setting, between the woods and water, offers a wonderful feeling of calm and is a perfect place to relax .

9

The origins of the hunting lodge complex can be traced back to the 13th century . Based on archaeologi-cal research and the extant cellar vaults, it may have been used as an abbey/burial ground, a hunting palatinate for the Staufer or Meißen Margrave dynasties or a pilgrim hospice on the St . James‘ Way and Sacred Way .

The oldest cellars in the complex are:y The Romanesque cellar under the

New Hunter’s Cottage (Neues Jäger haus)

y An underground Romanesque pas sage way (heating duct I) by the inn cellar under the New Hunter‘s Cottage

y And an underground Romanesque passageway (heating duct II), last used as a drainage channel, by the enclosing wall near the New Hunter‘s Cottage .

In the mid-16th century, prince elec-tor “Father” Augustus of Saxony had a royal hunting lodge built on the old foundation walls of Tharandt Castle, using building materials from the old castle . In addition to its use for hunting, it was primarily intended as a place of relaxation .

The hunting lodge complex com-prised a royal manor, fiscal officer’s house (Schösserei, the current hunt-ing lodge), the servants’ quarters (Bärenhaut) and stables, and was completed between 1554 and 1558 .The hunting lodge was not com-pleted until 1599, and the feudal stronghold (Fronfeste) in 1614 . The buildings were modified and ex-panded in the 17th and 18th century, in particular following a fire in 1654 . After war damage, fires and demolition, only the fiscal officer’s house and Colmnitzer Tor gate in the south-west of the surrounding wall were left standing . In 1720, a barn was built in place of the hunter’s cottage, and in 1828, the feudal stronghold was demol ished and the royal manor was torn down, with the exception of its cellar . The building material was used to build the Grillenburg Inn . The grounds were surrounded by four lakes, fed by the rivers Schwarze Pfütze and – via a canal – Triebisch (with its tributaries X- Bach, Kro atenbach or Kroaten wasser) . The arched sandstone bridge, still in use today, was built in 1730 in place of the former wooden bridge, to plans by Chief State Architect Daniel Pöppel mann .

Existing buildings Complex as a whole listed for preservation

The hunting lodge In 1855, the fiscal officer’s house (Schösserei), which had been built between 1554 and 1558, was converted to a royal hunting lodge, complete with a Biedermeier facade, to plans by State Construction Director Rothe .

Lodge buildingThe two-storey lodge building is made of quarry stone and brickwork, and has a partial cellar . The basic build ing substance is in a good structural condition . In 2010/2011, the roof was completely refurbished as a vented roof, and the top floor’s ceiling was insulated . The space under the roof has not been converted into a loft yet . Due to the extended period of vacancy, the

11

heating and plumbing systems in particular need re-furbishment . The lodge building was last used from 2004 to 2009 as office and exhibition space for the Saxon State Foundation for Nature and the Environ-ment . The lodge is joined to its annex via connecting structures .

AnnexThe annex houses two large garages, an attic loft apartment and various adjoining rooms . The walls are built of bricks and mixed masonry . The roof structure consists of mixed square timbers, and is covered with extruded interlocking pantiles . The roof has been ex-tensively damaged . The roof and attic rooms are not

thermally insulated . In recent years, only the garages were still used . The annex and connecting structure are in a poor struc tural condition; demolition and re-construction are an option .

SchlossbrückeThe triple-arched vault bridge was built around 1730, and is listed as a protected monument . The vaults and masonry are largely sandstone .

Neorenaissance guesthouse New Hunter‘s Cottage, bowling alley, Kennels building and gardener‘s cottageThe New Hunter‘s Cottage was built between 1937 and 1939 to plans by Prof . Wilhelm Jost on the foundation walls of a Romanesque central building (13th century) . It served as accommodation for official hunting parties of the Saxon Hunting Court (Jägerhof) . The interior fittings, designed by Prof . Oswin Hempe, were built by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau . It boasted what was probably Europe’s largest intarsia wall at the time, based on designs by artist Max Wendl (1904–1984), some of which was stolen in May 2009, after which the rest was removed for storage . After World War II, the complex with the bowling alley, hunting hut, bunker, gardener‘s cottage, Kennels building and boathouse was used as a sanatorium for victims of the Nazi regime .Among others, Leonid Breschnew stayed here in late March 1968 during the secret Dresden meetings of the Warsaw Pact nations to discuss the Prague Spring, and Fidel Castro resided here in June 1972 during his visit to the GDR .
