5TOP 5 REASONS TO CHOOSE ROMANIA

Setting Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, is situated in the south of the country, on both sides of the river Dambovita, at an altitude of 70-90m. Being set at the intersection of 44 degrees 25 minutes 50 seconds northern latitude parallel with the 26 degrees 04 minutes 50 seconds eastern longitude meridian, Bucharest is situated at the same latitude with Beograd (in former Yugoslavia), Bordeaux (France), Genoa (Italy), the North of the Japanese island - Hokkaido, Goby Desert, the North of the U.S.A. In Romania, Bucharest is at about 225 km away from the Black Sea, about 65 km away from the Danube and over 100 km from the Carpathians (125 km away from Sinaia). To the population of over 2.1 million inhabitants, the commuting population is added so the population of Bucharest reaches 2.3 million inhabitants, thus being the largest metropolis in South-Eastern Europe.

HistoryThe city of Bucharest represents a very old settling, the documents attesting the first man presence in the area at about 150.000 years ago. The first documentary attestation dates back to the 20th September 1459 (Vlad Tepes was ruler at the time) and it mentions Bucharest as the second courtly residence ranking after Targoviste. As far as the name of the city is concerned there are several legends. One of them promotes the idea that its name comes from the first settler on the banks of Dambovita, a shepherd called Bucur. Another one sustains that the name of the city comes from the Greek “Helis” (meaning sun, joy) - “the City of Joy. The year 1848 marked the emergence of the first means for public transportation - the omnibus with 10-15 seats. In 1872 the first tram pulled by horses came into use, being replaced by the electric tram in 1894; the first automobiles could be seen in the streets of Bucharest starting with 1900. Gas lighting was introduced in 1871 being gradually replaced with electric lighting starting with 1882. Thus, Bucharest was soon to be called “Little Paris” due to the influence of the French metropolis which could be seen in fashion as well as in the architectural style.

6BUCHAREST OVERVIEW

Parliament Palace (Palatul Parlamentului)Built by Communist Party leader, Nicolae Ceausescu, the colossal Parliament Palace (formerly known as the People’s Palace) is the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon. It took 20,000 workers and 700 architects to build. The palace boasts 12 stories, 1,100 rooms, a 328-ft-long lobby and four underground levels, including an enormous nuclear bunker.A guided tour takes visitors through a small section of dazzling rooms, huge halls and quarters used by the Senate (when not in session).

Romanian Atheneum (Ateneul Roman)This is Bucharest’s most prestigious concert hall and one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. It was built in 1888 in neo-classical style after a design by the French architect Albert Galleron. With its 40 m high dome and the Doric columns it resembles an ancient temple.

Metropolitan Church (Biserica Patriarhiei)Set atop one of the city’s few hills, known as Mitropoliei, the Metropolitan Church has been the centerpiece of the Romanian Orthodox faith since the 17th century. The church was built by Constantin Serban Basarab, ruler of the province of Walachia between 1656 and 1658, to a design inspired by the Curtea de Arges monastery. The outstanding bell-tower at the entrance was built in 1698 and restored in 1958. The Triumphal Arch (Arcul de Triumf)Modelled on the triumphal arch in Paris, the structure was erected in 1935-1936 to commemorate the creation of Greater Romania which took place in 1918. It sits on the spot where two earlier arches stood: the first arch made of wood and cardboard was erected in 1878 to mark Romania’s independence from the Turks; the second arch made of timber was erected in 1922 to mark Ferdinand’s entry into Bucharest as the first king of Greater Romania.

7BUCHAREST OVERVIEW

The Village Museum (Muzeul Satului)The Village Museum was established in 1936 and it contains over 300 wooden houses, windmills, churches etc. from all over the country. You shouldn’t miss this museum which is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Sometimes the museum hosts craft fairs and folk music and dance festivals.

Museum of Romanian Peasant (Muzeul Taranului Roman)The Museum of Romanian Peasant is the winner of the European Museum of the Year Award for year 1996. A short visit to the museum will convince you that the award is well deserved. The collection includes 18.000 pieces of pottery and 20.000 examples of national dress from all over the country, as well as carpets, icons, furniture, photographs and films documenting the customs of rural life.

The Old Court Church (Biserica Curtea Veche)The Old Court Church (also called the Old Princely Church) is the oldest church in Bucharest. Its building started in 1558 during the reign of Mircea Ciobanul (Prince Mircea the Shepherd) and was finished by his son in 1591. The church was built in the Wallachian architectural style of the 16th century. The exterior decoration is made of brick stripes alternating with plaster stripes. The church was restored after a fire in 1847 and then again between the years of 1928 - 1938 by the Commission of Historical Monuments, which tried to bring the church to its original appearance. This church was the coronation place of Wallachia’s ruling princes for almost three centuries (from the second half of the 16th century to the first half of the 19th century). The beautiful carved door was added in the early 18th century by Prince Stefan Cantacuzino. The interior has been blackened with time but you can still admire the beautiful frescoes, some dating from the 16th century.

8BUCHAREST OVERVIEW

National Art Museum (former Royal Palace)The imposing building which used to be the Royal Palace is located in the Revolution Square (Piata Revolutiei), in the northwestern corner. It was first built around 1815 by prince Dinicu Golescu and it underwent changes over several decades. Starting with 1948 the palace houses the National Art Museum and it displays an extensive collection of Romanian and European art dating from the 15th to the 20th century. The building was damaged during the events of December 1989 and was closed for several years for repairs.

Cantacuzino Palace (Palatul Cantacuzino)This palace was designed by the architect I.D.Berindei in French baroque style and construction was started in 1899. Above the main entrance there is a giant shell-shaped porte-cochere; two stone lions guard the entrance. George Enescu - Romania’s national composer - lived here for a period of time.

Cotroceni PalaceBuilt in 1893 by the French architect Paul Gottereau. It was designed as the permanent residence of Prince Ferdinand. It is placed in the middle of a splendide garden and contains many representative elements of Romanian architecture. Today it holds also the residence of the Romanian Presidency.

Cretulescu Church (Biserica Cretulescu)On one of the corners of Piata Revolutiei, next to the former Royal Palace, lies the beautiful red brick Cretulescu church, one of the oldest churches in Bucharest. It was commisioned in 1722 by the boyar Iordache Cretulescu and his wife Safta, a daughter of prince Constantin Brancoveanu. The church is built in the style created by Constantin Brancoveanu, a seventeenth century ruler of Wallachia, who commisioned numerous buildings during his reign and set out to create a distinctive national genre of architecture. The Brancovenesc or Brancovean Style blends Byzantine and Western architectural elements together with indigeneous forms.

Romania is the perfect land of contrasts and paradoxes, a country where past and present meet and found a harmonious, wonderful world. Through its famous painted churches and monasteries, folk art or feudal castles in the Carpathian Mountains and Transylania, and especially the traditional rural life. The new world is embodied by the bold modern urban architecture and by the Western styles of life adopted by Romania ‘s townsfolk. There is a wealth of folk tales, legends, arts passed on through the centuries waiting to be discovered along with many other wonders, in an exceptionally beautiful natural space. The villages are a real testimony of the Romanian cultural identity. Since old times the inhabitants, predominantly shepherds by profession, built wooden houses with shingled roofs and at the same time they were and still are great masters in manufacturing wool and leather made goods. There is something for all the family amongst the rich history and culture that shaped the towns and landscape of this untouched part of Europe. Enjoy a variety of activities and sightseeing, enjoy walks and learn local crafts, cooking and traditional farming methods.
