Fryderyk Chopin

(1810-1849) The greatest Polish composer, celebrated world-wide: his works are performed at concerts and recorded by the most outstanding musicians. Chopin's creative output is one of the most enduring elements of the world's musical culture. Chopin was a musical genius, a highly talented composer and a matchless pianist. As a composer he synthetized bold musical ideas in the domain of harmony, melody, texture and timbre with the simplicity of folk motifs and so elevated raised the piano to the status of a major instrument. His mastery of form, and the melodic and harmonic wealth of his music became an unattainable model for many composers. Chopin's creative output established new ways of development for music and has been a source of inspiration for many succeeding composers.

He has won prestigious awards including Grammy Awards in 1987 and 1998 and 2001, and the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition in 1992.

As well as the works already mentioned, his compositions include four operas, eight symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral settings of mainly religious texts, as well as chamber and instrumental works.

Fernando PessoaFernando Pessoa, born in Lisbon in 1888, was a Portuguese poet and writer, one of the greatest of the Portuguese language and literature.

He lived some years in South Africa, where he learned English perfectly, and three of the four works that he published during his lifetime, are written in English.

During his lifetime, he worked as a businessman, editor, literary critic, journalist, politician, commentator, translator, inventor, astrologer, and at the same time he produced his prose and verse works.

As a poet, he was known for his multiple personalities, designed by heteronyms, which were the basis for the studies about his life and work.

Fernando Pessoa died in Lisbon, with 47 years old, as a victim of hepatic colic.

Rui Veloso

Rui Veloso was born on July 30, 1957 in Lisbon, but moved very early to the Oporto.

With only fifteen years old, he begins playing guitar by himself, knowing, four years later, Carlos Tê, his lyricist, and forming a group called Magara Blues Band (with Mano Zé and Manfred Minneman).

In 1979, he recorded a demo that included subjects in English and Portuguese, in which the editor Valentim de Carvalho, interested by the themes in Portuguese, hired the young musician.

One year later, in July, he publishes the album “Ar de Rock”, with the great success “Chico Fininho” and “Rapariga do Shopping”. This success led to a lot of rock bands singing in Portuguese, in what became known as the Boom Rock Portuguese, which leads to the consideration of Rui Veloso as the father of Portuguese rock.
