CHRISTIAN STEWARDS
WHAT WE DO AS CATHOLICS: Part 7: Preparation of the Gifts
The priest then says the prayers in preparation of the gifts. These prayers are Christian adaptations of the barukh prayers from the Seder (Passover) meal. For example, this is the beginning of the blessing of the bread in the Seder: ברוך אתה ה' א לוהינו, מלך העולם, המוציא לחם מן הארץ
(Remember Hebrew is read right to left) Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam, hamotzi lehem min ha'aretz. Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, Who brings forth bread from the earthT
You should be able to see some reflection of the opening of the prayer over the bread said by the priest, at this point: “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer youT”
After the prayers over the bread and wine, the priest quietly says a prayer that the sacrifice might be acceptable: “With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.” In our egalitarian culture as Americans, we sometimes forget that, when we worship God, we truly are asking him to come to us in a way that he, in no way, owes us. In theological terms, we speak of God’s condescension, that he will come down to us purely from his love and graciousness. Some of these quiet prayers of the priest express this in ways that we shouldn’t forget as we approach the altar.
Next the priest washes his hands. Unlike Pilate who washed his hands to disclaim any responsibility, the priest is here acknowledging that he is, in no way, worthy of what God is allowing him to do at this moment. He asks God to free him from his own sins so that he may offer the sacrifice. This is one of the few times in the Mass that the priest prays for himself, “I/me” instead of on behalf of the whole people, “We/us.” The priest prays: “Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.”
Now that he and the gifts are prepared for the sacrifice, the priest turns to the people and invites them to pray, “Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.” Prior to the updated translation in 2011, the English was rendered as “our” sacrifice instead of “my sacrifice and yours.” The difference here is important. The priest is offering the sacrifice at the altar on behalf of the people; it is not directly everyone’s sacrifice. Each Christian offers his or her own sacrifice, though, principally, his or her very life.
The people then stand and respond, “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.” This is a beautiful expression of the twofold purpose of all liturgy in the Church: the worship of God (“the praise and glory of his name”) and the sanctification of man (“for our good and the good of all his holy Church”). HAITI UPDATE During this year's mission trip, we were excited to have one of our original interpreters, Daniel Tillius, join us. He lives in Port au Prince and has developed the largest urban community garden of it's kind in Haiti. With his guidance, the children will be developing a similar garden at the St. Rose de la Merci school. This will involve the kids from the 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes. They will learn how to compose, cultivate seeds, monitor the growth cycles of a variety of fruits, vegetables and flowers, implement raised gardens and maintain an herbal garden, learning how the herbs can be used for medicinal purposes. The school's principal, Villius, and two children from each of the four classes involved will soon be taking a field trip to see Daniel's garden in Port au Prince. The hope is that the children will develop an appreciation for cultivating the land that will provide not only sustainable food, but opportunities for the future that will extend into the Robillard community. This is an exciting new project for the community, and we will continue to give updates as it develops.

JOIN US FOR STATIONS OF THE CROSS AT 7:00 PM ON FRIDAYS DURING LENT
The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every church. Join us in the church at 7:00pm every Friday through March 23, 2018.
