The Archdioceses for Military Service receives no funding from the U.S. Government or the U.S. Military, has no parishes for a weekly in-pew collection, and must rely principally on private donations to fund an annual operating budget of over $8.2 million. The AMS is responsible for providing the full range of pastoral ministries to those serving in the United States Armed Services, enrolled in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and for the families of these populations. Please help me continue to provide priests for the Church and the mili-tary chaplaincy and to minister to the Catholic military men and women, and their families. With sentiments of unwavering gratitude, I remain Sincerely in Christ, (The Most Reverend) Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D. Archbishop for the Military Services, USA

Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify. Vestments Most parishes have vestments but it is also common that each priest has his own vestments simply due to sanitary reasons; I have personal vestments be-cause I do not like wearing a vestment that smells like another priest’s cologne! All priests have their own albs too for hygiene reasons and proper fitting. You will notice that I make use of two styles of chasuble the Roman and Gothic cut. The Roman style is cut at the shoulders and having the shape of a fiddle down the front thus nicknamed “fiddle back”. This style was developed for use in warm areas while the longer flowing chasuble called the Gothic style was more common in colder climates. There are other cuts such the French, German, Spanish, and St. Philip Neri they all have a story to their style and it is simply the priest’s preference as to which he uses. The word “chasuble” means little tent and it is a symbol of the priest’s charity. The stole worn under the chasuble, a long scarf like vestment hanging down the neck, usually matches the color and fabric of the chasuble unless it is not part of a set then its style can vary. The stole is a symbol of priestly authority. Sometimes you will see the stole worn over the chasuble this style was popular for a few years. But it seems better that au-thority be covered by charity. The alb is a reminder of purity and the priest’s bap-tism. Albs can be plain or decorated and made of lace. The cincture is a rope belt used to hold the alb and stole together and can be in any liturgical color. It symbolizes celibacy. Under the alb an amice may be worn, it’s symbolize is “helmet of salvation” and the vesting prayer asks that the priest’s mind be free from distraction. Prac-tically the amice keeps the alb and stole clean from perspiration. The tunical and dalmatic of a sub deacon and dea-con symbolize service and joy. Bishops may make use of these vestments on solemn occasions. And the priest wears the dalmatic, in the old rite, on Holy Saturday while singing the Exultet since that great hymn is proper to the role of a deacon. You may also see the chalice veil and burst (used to hold the corporal) both seem to not be popular in recent history but they both generally match the vestment set. The amice and cincture may not be worn depending on the cut of the alb in the Novus Ordo while in the Old Rite all priestly vestments must be worn. The cope or cape like vestment has its origin as a rain coat and is used for any liturgical celebration outside of Mass. In Christ, Fr. Saffron
