■ FIRST READING: Pentecost was one of the three pilgrimage feasts of the Jews, when all who were able came to the Temple in Jerusalem; thus, the presence of so many foreigners in Jerusalem that day. All the disciples were gathered in one place. Acts of the Apostles 1:13-14 identifies these disciples as the Eleven, Mary, the mother of Jesus, the women who journeyed with Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem (see Luke 8:1-3; 23-49), and his relatives. The cosmic sign of the strong driving wind attracted the crown. Note also the sign of “fire.” The fruit of the Spirit’s presence and work is the disciples’ ability to proclaim the Gospel to various tongues and be understood by those who heard them.

■ RESPONSORIAL PSALM 104: As at the Vigil Mass, Psalm 104 is used, with the same antiphon. There is some variation in the stanzas. Today’s addition in the last stanza voices the desire that both God’s glory and God’s joy in his creation endure. The psalmist is intent on being pleasing to the Lord and finding joy in him. A beautiful theme for each of our lives!

■ SECOND READING: The contrast between the Spirit and the flesh - is emphasized in today’s reading. The flesh represents anything that is opposed to God, the Spirit, that which is enlivened by God’s power and presence. Paul’s command to live by the Spirit points to the choice we have in the matter. Which fruits are more evident in our lives?

■ THE GOSPEL: The setting of today’s text is Jesus’ last discourse to his disciples, at table with them the night before he died. Jesus promises to send the Spirit, and Advocate on their behalf, the Spirit of truth. Note the intimate workings between the Father, the Son, and the Spirit and how the disciples are drawn into this by the power of the Spirit at work in their own lives. On their part, the disciples must receive what the Spirit declares to them and testify on Jesus’ behalf.

Pentecost Sunday marks the endof Easter Time. Today, wecelebrate the descent of the HolySpirit upon the apostles and thebeginning of the Church. Thestory of Pentecost is found intoday’s First Reading. In theGospel, we hear Jesus promisethe Holy Spirit to the disciples -a Spirit that would be a helperand an Advocate, who wouldenable them and us to be hiswitnesses throughout the world.

From the Pastor’s Desk…

Father Tom Blind Farewell Although not assigned to St. Thomas Parish, Father Tom Blind has been in residence for years in our rectory as he served as chaplain to the students and faculty of Kean University.

He was informed recently by our Archbishop that he will be receiving a new pastoral assignment beginning in June. So he will no longer be living here in our parish, where he has helped us celebrate mass and the other sacraments on Sundays and Weekdays throughout the year.

We will miss Father Tom’s presence among us here at St. Thomas. His final Mass will be on Sunday, June 10th at 7:30 A.M. A reception will follow in the St. Peter’s Room in our Parish Center where you will have the opportunity to wish him well as he begins a new phase in his pastoral ministry. So mark your calendars and plan to be with us.

Paul Alongi – Man of the Year

Last week the Essex-West Hudson Federation of Holy Name Societies honored Paul Alongi at their annual Mass and Dinner with its “Man of the Year” award. All of us are proud of Paul for his many years of service in our Holy Name Society. He is always willing to help our church and its parishioners as the need arises. Congratulations Paul on receiving this well-deserved award!

A Special Thank You We are blessed here at St. Thomas the Apostle with a consistently beautiful and prayerful liturgy. This is not an accident. It happens because of the efforts of countless individuals who, week after week, give of their time and talents, often behind the scenes, to help us worship together:

• Our Eucharistic Ministers, who help us encounter Christ in the Eucharist and bring communion to the sick and homebound.

• Our Lectors, who help us to hear the Word of God giving us an opportunity to respond to its message with faith.

• Our Musicians & Choir Members, who help us respond joyfully to our God with music and song.

• Our Ministers of Hospitality (also known as Ushers) who, in their act of greeting, remind us to experience the presence of Christ in each other as we walk through the doors of the Church.

• And those who work, often unseen week after week, as Decorators of the church, Sacristans preparing for Mass, and Collection Counters after Mass.

Together this spirit of self-giving builds up our faith community. So I encourage all our parishioners to take sometime to notice and appreciate what they do for us.

A Special Prayer Many of our young people are progressing on the journey of faith. Recently, thanks to the efforts of Tracey Rennie with many teachers and catechists, over one hundred children made their First Communion. At the same time over one hundred of our young parishioners are taking part in continuing preparations, under the supervision of Tim Dennin, for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please pray for our young parishioners that they may discover in us a welcoming and supportive home.

In the Lord, Rev. Charles J. Miller, Pastor

WHY CHOOSE A CATHOLIC SCHOOL EDUCATION?

Excellence in Academic Achievement

A Catholic education is a challenging education. High standards, strong motivation, effective discipline and an atmosphere of caring combine to foster excellence, and, a high quality of student performance is supported by the evidence.

• Catholic School students score significantly above the national averages on standardized testing.

• Research shows that because of a greater emphasis on homework and study, Catholic School students develop more effective writing skills.

• Catholic High School students attend post-secondary education at a rate in excess of 80% and are more likely to complete their program of studies.

• Catholic Schools have an excellent success rate in educating minority students.

While providing a stimulating and demanding education, Catholic Schools give students a high level of individualized attention and personal sharing. This commitment is reinforced by participation in programs for advanced students and also for those experiencing difficulties in reading, writing, and math.

Family and Community

A Catholic School recognizes the parents and family as primary educators and joins with them to form a living community of shared visions.

• Catholic Schools help students understand that each person is unique and valuable.

• Catholic Schools join with the family to help students understand their special place in the family, the Church, and society.

• Catholic Schools encourage family input and involvement in the ongoing education of their children. Research shows that such a partnership results in higher attendance rates and lower dropout rates.

• Catholic Schools strive to create a special bond among the students, the home, the school, and the church, so that all share the strong sense of community.

Every child shares in an educational environment filled with love and concern -- a community joining together to help create a better world.
