CANDLE INTENTIONS

Church: Frank Korec Convent: Janet Besida

A penitent woman is washing Jesus’ feet at the house of the Pharisee. People are judging her and showing disdain, so Jesus relates a parable to explain that she is showing and experiencing deep gratitude for her reconciliation with the Lord. Those who have been lost in the depths of shame and despair surely rejoice more for rediscovering the path toward right relationship with God; therefore, instead of judgment and disdain, they deserve our attention and imitation. All of us are alike in the need for forgiveness. Those who have been forgiven for more are role models for the rest of us, not because they have sinned more, but because of the profound sense of joy they have come to know in light of God’s forgiveness.

■ First Reading: Today’s First Reading and Gospel place two sinners in bold contrast: the one, the famous King David, greatest of Israel’s kings, and the other, an unnamed woman who anoints Jesus’ feet when he is at table in the hose of a Pharisee. The First Reading begins with a recital of all God has done for the seemingly thankless David. Nevertheless, when he acknowledged his sin, David was forgiven.

■ Responsorial Psalm 32: Our antiphon is a confession of sin, as is the second stanza chosen from this penitential Psalm. The first, third and last stanzas focus on the joy and gladness–indeed, blessedness–of the one who acknowledges sin and is forgiven.

■ Second Reading: One of the major issues in the Letter to the Galatians is that of justification. Is it by observance of the Law or by faith in Jesus? A problem had arisen in the Galatian community because of Judaizing missionaries who say that to be Christian, Gentiles must first convert to Judaism. Paul’s emphasis is strong: the right relationship with God is through faith in Jesus, not circumcision.

■ The Gospel: The story of the encounter between Jesus and the sinful woman highlights no only Jesus’ compassion and his authority to forgive sins, but also the woman’s great love which is much more significant to Jesus than her sins. It is not so from the perspective of Simon. As a Pharisee, he would pride himself on his separation from sinners.

St. Thomas the Apostle Mission Statement

The Roman Catholic faith community of St. Thomas the Apostle recognizes God’s call to be a sign of His Kingdom in the communities we serve. We respond to this call by:

† Leading people to a deeper relationship with Christ by providing opportunities for spiritual growth, renewal, education, the celebration of the Sacraments, and the worship of God in the sacred liturgy;

† Encouraging a commitment to justice and to service of those in need;

† Promoting good stewardship of our time, talent and treasure;

† Building a community of hospitality and support in the daily living out of Christian ideals by nourishing mutual respect and understanding within our Church, our families, our community, and other faith traditions.

ARE YOU GOING INTO THE HOSPITAL? DO YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER IN THE

HOSPITAL?

We would like to visit our parishioners who are homebound, in the hospital or other health care facility. Because of patient confidentiality laws, however, the only way we can know is if someone informs us.

Beyond Cornerstone Service

Thanks to all the women who donated, cooked, served and prayed our March visit to St. Augustine’s Soup Kitchen. It was a

big success. Many hands made light work.

Lorraine McMillan has graciously offered to organize our next visit which will be on Saturday, July 20th.

An organizational meeting will be held on Monday, June 17th at 7 pm for those volunteers who wish to cook, serve and/or contribute financially to this effort.

STA “300 CLUB” RAFFLE

Dear “600 Club” Members,

I want to say thank you for supporting our parish “300 Club Raffle”. Because of your generosity so many things are able to happen at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish. Our “600 Club” is also a great way to take a chance at winning a significant prize (better odds than most lotteries). Most of us could use a few extra dollars, so it was an exciting moment when we announced the winners. Thanks to you, we were able to sell 235 tickets. The winners and amounts won are as follows:

“300 CLUB” RAFFLE WINNERS

Ticket #0103 Alexis Kiefer $ 8,225.00 Ticket #0063 Jose & Manuela Blanco $ 2,350.00 Ticket #0123 Vanessa Tuason $ 1,175.00

Congratulations to all of our winners. I would also like to thank our parish Finance Committee for all of their hard work which made the raffle possible. Special thanks to Jim Gasparini, Terry Lupo, and Paul Alongi for their efforts. Thanks also to all of you who sold tickets and encouraged others to take part.

As we begin planning for next year, we look forward to the possibility of your support in the future. While most of us didn’t win this year’s raffle, it is a comfort to know that our contribution helps to keep the many ministries and good works of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish alive and well. May God, who is never outdone in generosity, bless you and all those you love.

Sincerely,

Rev. Charles J. Miller Pastor

STA School wishes to THANK parishioners

who joined in this spring's Blooming with Box Tops Drive

The parish submitted over 700 box tops, earning over $70.00 for our school!

We will have another drive in the fall, but please feel free to continue depositing your Box Tops in the

box in the vestibule at any time.

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle’s flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it...Dad.

A Blessed Father’s Day to all the fathers, grandfathers & father-figures at St. Thomas

The Catholic School Advantage

The Catholic School advantage is reflected in the philosophy that permeates the total education program and the lives of the faculty and students. This philosophy challenges students to improve the world by sharing Gospel values and living Christ's message of salvation. They grow to understand the roots of their faith. and their responsibilities as Christians.

• Students explore their faith through classes and activities in Scripture, Sacraments, Church, and morality.

• Catholic Schools stress the value of self-discipline and commitment.

• Faculty and staff are role models who share their faith, their talents, and their time.

• While not all students who come to the Catholic Schools are Catholic, all share experiences of faith and values.

• Catholic Schools encourage each student to accept the challenges of being a Christian in tomorrow's world.

Values which promote understanding and service to the elderly and the handicapped, the poor and the ill, are an important part of the Catholic School experience. As a faith community, we emphasize those values which encourage students to accept others rather than exclude them, to understand the difference between right and wrong, and to commit themselves to serve God by serving others.

Religious Education News

Congratulations to our Grade 5 and Grade 8 students and teachers for a job well done!

We recently received our national standardized test results for the 2012-2013 year

and the scores were wonderful.

Our CCD students in Grades 5 and 8 take this test each year to assess the strength of our

program in such areas as faith knowledge, liturgy, sacraments, and relationship with Jesus.

Our Grade 5 students scored in the 85th percentile nationally which is higher than the national average for Catholic school students (80%) and higher than the national average for

Religious Education students (68%).

Our Grade 8 students scored in the 79th percentile nationally which is higher than the national average for Catholic school students (74%) and Religious Education students (60%).

Further, 56% of our students scored in the Advanced Proficient range while the

national average was 14% scoring in the Advanced Proficient range.

This is a true testament to the dedication of all of our teachers at every grade.

Hard work really pays off! Thank you!
