Events• Cassie is disappointed that Strawberry is a small
town. She is curious to why Big Ma has set up the milk and eggs stand in the back. Big Ma had to talk to Mr. Jamison. When she left, T.J. said that he had to show them something in the shop. Stacey says ok. He says they will go ahead and package the food. Mr. Barnett ignores them when they try to package the food. Cassie explodes with madness. On the way out he bumps into Lillian Jean and is pushed down by Mr. Simms. She is then forced to apologize to Lillian Jean.
Vocabulary
• Wheedle: to persuade someone to do something

Characters• Mr. Barnett- Salesman at the store. Ignores the kids and Makes
Cassie mad.• Cassie- Gets very mad at Mr. Barnett. She is also emotionally hurt
by being pushed down.• T.J.- He wanted to get the pearl handed pistol and got everyone
into this.• Stacey- He said it was okay to go to the store without Big Ma.• Lillian Jean- She was bumped into by Cassie and forced Cassie to
apologize.• Mr. Simms- He pushed Cassie on the ground and hurt her feelings.
He then made her apologize to Lillian. • Big Ma- She set up the stand in the back. She also pulled Cassie
away from the store.
Figurative language

Themes
• Racism - There is racism in this chapter when Mr. Barnett serves the white people first even though the T.J was there first. Another example of racism is when Cassie bumps into Lillian Jean and is forces to apologize and must walk in the street by Mr. Simms, because he thinks that all white people are better and that black people are not as good.
• Family – A family example is when Big Ma makes Cassie apologize like Mr. Simms said so that Cassie doesn’t get hurt by Mr. Simms or other White people, even though Cassie doesn’t want to.
Setting
• The setting in this chapter is in Mississippi. The time is in 1933. In this chapter, Big Ma, Cassie, T.J and Stacey are in Strawberry Mississippi and they go to the Strawberry Mercantile.
