Marriage and childbirth was the destiny for women during the Renaissance

Women were to be betrothed at the age of eight and married between the ages of sixteen and twenty.

Women married young to ensure many heirs.A women would have a dowry or gift that

A dowry might be something such as money or animals for a farm.

On the wedding day, the father of the bride would parade her through the city to her new home.

A bride would often bring with her a cassoni or trunk to hold her belongings.

If a women did not marry, she was sent to a convent to become a nun.

Women would usually have five to ten children throughout their marriage.

After giving birth, there would be a lying in, or baby shower.

Friends and family would bring gifts and money for the mother.

Women were responsible for the upbringing of the children.

Sometimes, a women was permitted to work as a wool merchant, leathermaker, and other small jobs.

Wives of merchants would sometimes take over if their husbands died.

Women were paid less than men even for the same job.

The treatment of women goes back to the Bible to the story of Adam and Eve.

Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat a fruit from a tree God had said not to.

Because of this, women were considered weak and foolish.

Women were considered untrustworthy and mysterious in the eyes of men.
