Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids, the two majorphysiologically relevant forms of which arevitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin

a role in many important body functions. Itis best known for working with calcium in

Effect of Vit D in diabetes

Vitamin D deficiency has been shown toimpair insulin synthesis and secretion inhumans and in animal models of

diabetes, suggesting a role in thedevelopment of type 2 diabetes.

Population studies find that people whohave lower levels of vitamin D are more

likely to develop type 2 diabetes thanpeople who have higher levels ofvitamin D.

People with low levels of vitamin D have agreater risk of developing heart disease,including heart attack, stroke, and heartfailure compared to people with higher

Vitamin D3 is made in the skin when 7-

dehydrocholesterol reactswith ultraviolet light (UVB)

at wavelengths between 270 and300 nm, with peak synthesis occurringbetween 295 and 297 nm. Thesewavelengths are present in sunlight

when the UV index is greater than threeand also in the light emitted by the UVlamps in tanning beds

Vitamin D3 produced in the epidermismust be metabolized to be active. Thefirst step, 25-hydroxylation, takes place

primarily in the liver. However, in orderfor vitamin D metabolites to achievemaximum biologic activity they must behydroxylated in the 1 position by the

enzyme CYP27B1; 1,25(OH)2D is themost potent metabolite of vitamin Dand accounts for most of its biologicactions.

atorvastatin (Lipitor) that enters the body. Thismight decrease how well atorvastatin (Lipitor)

works.

absorbs. This interaction might be a problem forpeople with kidney disease. Take vitamin D twohours before, or four hours after antacids.
