1. What is Information Technology ? Information Technology (IT) is the application of computers and

telecommunication technology to obtain, process , store, retrieve & transmit data, in the form of voice , pictures or text or often in the context of a business or other enterprise.

IT can do atleast 3 things:• It can process raw data into useful information. • It can recycle processed information & use it as data in another processing

step. • It can pack information in a new form so its easier to understand, more

attractive, or more useful.

Information Technology Revolution or simply I.T. Revolution is the remarkable changes brought about by information technology in various fields like Education, Entertainment, Business, Medical & Lifestyle etc.

knowledge concerning the global environment as it is used for mapping and

monitoring various natural resources.

IT is used for computer based modeling and simulation of environmental

scenarios for analysis and prediction of climate change and weather.

IT enables environmental scientists and researchers around the world to

communicate, collaborate and coordinate.

Role of IT In Business

Role of IT in Business IT plays an important role in business environment as every organisation adopts it

in some form or the other to perform the tasks in effective manner.

E-Commerce includes buying & selling products and services over the internet, electronic fund transfers, smart cards, digital cash & all other ways of doing business over digital networks.eg- Flipkart.com , Amazon.com are examples of E-Commerce.

Role of IT in Defence & Military Services Information technology in defence services help the military to improve

readiness & response. More flexible, timely & dependable access to information is needed.

IT capability allows military personnel to literally converse with computers to create , access & manage information & solve problems.

Role of IT in E-Governance

Government Forms available online for easy downloading. Registration of birth and death online. Land records management and information. Drivers Licensing application online.Application for Passport online. Application admission to government education institutions online.

Role of IT in Human Health & Medicine IT can be used for audio, visual and data communications for medical

consultation, diagnosis, treatment, nursing and medical education.

IT is used for testing of DNA, creating DNA database and genetic information about population. Medical records and finger prints which are used by investigating agencies to identify missing persons and criminals.

Better control of and monitoring of epidemics and spread of disease (HIV, Malaria, Swine Flu).
