WHAT IS DIET?? A.Diet is defined as the types and amounts of food eaten daily by an individual.
Have you ever wondered what are the types of food we consume on a daily basis??
NUTRITIONIt is defined as the sum of the processes by which an individual takes and utilizes food.
What do we utilize?A.NUTRIENTS:- Carbohydrates,Fats,Proteins,Minerals and Vitamins.
OUT OF ALL THE NUTRIENTS, CARBOHYDRATES PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN CAUSING DENTAL CARIES!! HOW?? :/
STRUCTURE OF A TOOTH
Enamel is the outermost layer of tooth and it gets destroyed completely in the process of dental caries.
Also, it is the hardest material in human body( harder than your bones) !!!
This brings us to our next question-WHAT ARE DENTAL CARIES??
CARIES means to ‘rot’ or ‘decay’.Therefore dental caries is the process of rotting away of a tooth.
THE PROCESS OF DECAY OF THE TOOTH INVOLVES 3 MAJOR FACTORS:-

SOFT FOOD ROUGHAGE
CARBOHYDRATES IN DIET
ARCH CRIMINAL OF CARIES
TOTAL SUGARS= FREE SUGARS + ADDED SUGARS
Added sugars are those sugars which are added to foods and beverages. They can cause dental caries if good oral hygiene is not maintained.
Free sugars- Sugars present in unbound form in food and beverages.
ADDED SUGAR CONTENT IN VARIOUS FOODS
VITAMIN CONTENT OF DIET
Out of all the vitamins, Vitamin D and Vitamin K have been proven useful in supplementing to maintenance of oral hygiene.
VITAMIN D- Required for normal development of teeth and also help in reducing chances of caries occurrence in children.
VITAMIN K-It helps in reducing the breakdown of carbohydrates ,so that the bacteria present in mouth are not able to use it.
