All of us who saw Steve’s demo
will agree he presented an enor-
mous amount of detail. I de-
bated whether to structure this
article around the details and
helpful hints he gave but after
looking at my notes I knew
there wasn’t going to be enough room in the newsletter to do
so. I suggest reading the articles
listed below for the details.
All in all, I learned a lot of new
information. Thanks Steve!

Tablesaw Techniques
Steve joined us for the September
meeting and demonstrated table-
saw techniques for nearly 2 hours.
His time with us was very produc-
tive. The jigs he brought and
showed are designed around
safety, accuracy and ease. As an example; the crosscut sleds he
brought had extra high fences on
them to keep fingers away from
the blade, stop blocks that ensure
repeatability and a depth adjuster
for fine adjustments. Also, the jigs
he used for tapering, mitering cor-
ners and pattern sawing all are
designed to prevent kickback from
the offcuts all the while making
those tasks effortless.
Steve’s demonstration started with
a crosscut sled, great for cutting
small pieces safely. Then he pro-
ceeded into techniques for ripping
thin stock and tapering table legs.
Dovetail joinery on the tablesaw
followed, He told stories during
the demo without interrupting the
flow of his work. He explained
how he used to build “curb side”
furniture out of MDF when he first
started out. To hide the MDF all
of the corners were mitered. This
was when he perfected his
miter jig. He also learned that
a box made with mitered joints
is extremely sturdy.
Steve is a Contributor to Fine
Woodworking magazine. I’ve
listed a few articles he has
written that describe some of
the techniques he demon-strated for us (see below).
Some schematics of a few of
his jigs can be found in these
articles. An image of the miter
jig from issue #155 is shown
below.
