‘JUST KEEP GOING SOUTH,’ SAYS THE OLD MAN IN STORNOWAY, gesturing towards the direction in question. It’s a sunny day without being warm, and rugged green hills are visible beyond the low, pebble-dashed houses. He raises his eyebrows slightly. ‘Carry on south until you can’t go any further without getting your feet wet.’

I am cycling to the island of Barra, some 130 miles away.

I knew I’d be negotiating folded ranks of valleys, lochs and beaches – not to mention the various inter-island ferries and causeways that stitch them together – but it doesn’t sound as though I’ll be getting lost.

Road riding from one end of the Outer Hebrides to the other has a clear appeal. When you inspect the islands on the map and see them dangling down in a motley chain off the west coast of

Scotland, they cry out to be travelled through in full. The archipelago carries the tang of adventure too. Growing up, whenever I’d heard the words ‘Outer Hebrides’ the images conjured up were of remoteness: huddled sheep, windswept slopes and crashing waves. I have with me a bike, some binoculars and a pannier’s worth of clean kit. Everything I need, in short. Together we’ll be passing through nine islands in five days.

My expectations are soon smashed. While I’d known that the Outer Hebrides were secluded, I hadn’t appreciated how handsome they were, these pleated, heathered islands rising and falling on the fringes of the Atlantic. The steeper climbs are harsh pedalling, but I’ve been smitten from the first hour of the ride. Only 26,000 people live across the entire chain – the majority in the north – and as I make my way south, the landscape furls up and out in wild undulations. Silent emerald crags rear above glassy lochs, and around the edge of each island the sands are as pale as freshly churned butter.

But there is life astir, too. At the start of the journey I’d been briefed on all things furred, finned and feathered by a local man named Patrick Breslin, who had told me what to expect and where. ‘You’ll likely spot otters on South Uist,’ he had said. ‘On Benbecula, keep an eye out for hen harriers and golden eagles over the moor. And on Barra, make sure you head to Tangasdale Beach to look out for

porpoises. There’s a lot to see. You’re in for a treat, you know.’

He’s right. Hebridean wildlife soars and splashes across the week. I see Vs of greylag geese powering overhead, watch rotund seals heaving themselves onto slippery rocks and follow pairs of agile harriers scything through the sky above North Uist. Cycle-touring often becomes a gradual appreciation of the place through which you’re passing and as the villages and valleys blend together, the

archipelago’s mix of the sedate and the savage make it feel not just removed from the British mainland but a separate place entirely, its islands running at their own unpressured pace. The appearance of a Royal Mail van one morning, stark red beyond a peat bog, gives me a jolt. Is this really still the UK?

I am over-nighting in small pubs and guesthouses. ‘You’ll find it’s sunny every day up here,’ one jovial landlord confides, while presenting me with a mountainous

breakfast of eggs and potato scones. He winks. ‘But maybe only for five minutes.’

He’s right, the sun shines for hours at a time: on me, on the black-faced rams, on the dry stonewalls and on the peaks overhead. I cycle steadily, glad of the pubs and food stores when they come, but at my happiest when freewheeling along the road ahead, enjoying the sunlight playing on the ocean and the wild flowers nodding on the verges.

My island-to-island route is as follows: the moorland road through Lewis leads across a pinch of land to the hills and wide beaches of Harris, from which a ferry covers the short distance to tiny Berneray. From here, a causeway runs across to big, bold North Uist, leading

eventually to cove-scalloped Grimsay and low-lying Benbecula. Next up is South Uist, a vision of meadows and orchids that melt to red at sunset. One last causeway stretches across to prim little Eriskay, a picturesque parcel of land linked by ferry to my last, and arguably prettiest, island flirtation, Barra.

The cycling itself gives the journey a solid daily rhythm. It is a taxing ride at times, particularly when southerly headwinds gust up to meet me, but very rarely an unpleasant one. And by the time Barra appears, I am rewarded with a genuine sense of having completed something. On that last evening I sit outside a pub and stare down at the sun-struck

bay as two local drinkers improvise folk tunes on accordions. Offshore, a grey castle stands on its own islet as it has done since medieval times. In the golden light of a late spring evening, the whole scene feels almost dreamlike.

‘We get tourists across from the mainland,’ I’m told by one ageing Barra resident, his complexion a sign of a life spent largely outdoors. He moved here from Fife 20 years ago for a quieter existence. ‘I look at them and think, “The mainland? Ooh, I used to live there.” It doesn’t make me want to move back. We’re tamer out here, I’d say.’

I hadn’t thought of the islands as tame when my leg muscles had been bursting with lactic acid on the long climbs,

or when I’d cycled past lochs that were still a deep icy blue in the morning chill. Maybe he has a point though. The Outer Hebrides are raw, slow and even feral at times, but there’s something measured about their character and for cyclists in particular, it makes them a fiercely enjoyable proposition. Some 40 miles of water separate the islands from the mainland, but in many ways it’s far more than that. And to experience this for yourself? All you have to do is keep going south.

Happy trails(Pages 4 and 5) Cyclists enjoy a typically dramatic Hebridean landscape; (Pages 6 and 7) the calm of a loch amid the rolling hills; taking the easy route between sunlit waves and flower-dotted banks.

KITCHENER’S RAILWAY

When embarking on Lord Kitchener’s classic overland journey from Khartoum to Cairo with a champion jockey, it would be foolish to go to the railway station until you’ve been to the races.

Richard Dunwoody, double Grand National winner, grins with excitement as Fahed Belali, a Syrian entrepreneur who keeps his horses in the Khartoum racecourse stables, greets us at the gate.

‘Meet Abdul Rahman,’ he says, introducing us to a burly polo player on a tiny pony. The great-grandson of Mahdi Mohammed Bin Abd Allah, the messianic redeemer whose Dervish soldiers killed General Charles Gordon during the Siege of Khartoum in 1885, smiles benevolently. In isolated Sudan, history is always in the mix.

After the chukkas, we have the Friday races, run much as they were when the British set up the Khartoum Racing Club in 1908. The finishing straight of packed dirt, overlooked by a huge red mosque, has been watered, but the rest of the course is cloaked in drifting dust.

‘The Sudanese love their racing,’ says Ahmed Ali, the Federation’s secretary, twirling a cane topped with a horse’s head. Watching men in djellabas striking furtive bets forbidden under Sudan’s strict Sharia law leaves me in no doubt he’s right.

A Saturday morning trip to the battlefield at Omdurman across the Nile from the city puts us in an appropriately Churchillian mood for our journey to Cairo. On 1 September 1898 the 25-year-

old second lieutenant drank champagne with his peers. The next day, he led his troopers of the 21st Lancers, in the British Army’s final cavalry charge.

By nightfall, Kitchener emerged victorious, avenging Gordon’s death and leaving 9,700 Mahdist warriors dead. ‘It was the marvellous military railway that sealed the fate of the Dervish power,’ Churchill wrote in My Early Life.

In afternoon heat, Richard and I wait in a marble hall

under high ceiling fans for the weekly train to Wadi Halfa. A Chinese import, new for 2014, slides in, disgorges passengers and departs as noiselessly as it had arrived. Some time later, a ramshackle hybrid rattles to a halt beside the single stone platform. Soon afterwards, we trundle across the Nile to Omdurman and on to Altbara, the rail hub of the Sudan and home to its Railway Museum, where Kitchener’s steam engine stands on display in the gardens.

Installed in a compartment with twin beds and an electric fan, Richard and I make friends with Barbikar, a man of many words, none of which we understand. He proves an adept chai wallah, absorbing the movement of the train as he pours black tea or coffee flavoured with ginger and cloves into tiny glasses.

Our diesel chugs through rice paddies and orchards near the riverbank, then veers into the desert to cut off a huge Nile bend. Small towns

dominated by minarets are replaced by stations identified only by numbers, with sand on the line causing impromptu stops in the back of beyond. As the shovel detail trudges up the line, passengers stretch out on the shady side of the train, glad of the respite from their wooden seats. A full 35 hours later, we arrive inconveniently at the darkest hour before dawn – but bang on time.

In 1964, Wadi Halfa’s handsome waterfront drowned in the newly formed Lake Nasser, a victim of the Aswan High Dam built by the Egyptians to increase their control of the Nile. Nowadays, the desolate outpost comes alive on Tuesday afternoons when the Sagalnaam ferry leaves for Aswan.

The Sagalnaam is not a vessel for the fainthearted. In 1993, when its sister ship caught fire and sank in crocodile-infested waters two miles south of the temples

of Abu Simbel, 300 of 800 passengers died. As we force a congested passage between barricades of sacks and boxes containing herbs and spices, henna and dates on decks, stairwells and companionways, the overload is alarmingly obvious. There is no alternative, however. This is the only civilian route between Sudan and Egypt.

Waking to the 5am call to prayer is more welcome than usual: Abu Simbel’s crocodiles lie far behind. The morning passes at snail’s pace as a lone Egyptian official completes on-board passport checks, but by noon we are installed with foaming tankards on the terrace of Aswan’s historic Old Cataract Hotel. Built for the engineers working on the original dam in 1901, it was a favourite of Agatha Christie, who researched Death on the Nile in her suite, and Churchill – who was a guest during World War II.

As they discovered, there’s

no better base from which to explore Aswan: don’t miss Kitchener’s botanical gardens, the bird sanctuary in the bull-rushes and the magical temple of Isis at Philae.

Nor, as we discovered, is there a less crowded time to tour Egypt’s greatest treasures, though there is a downside. ‘How am I going to feed my horse?’ our Aswan driver asks sadly. When he was a boy, he worked alongside his father in the carriage scenes in Death on the Nile; now he’s facing ruin, thanks to terrorism 500 miles to the north.

With many of the riverboats docked for lack of custom, we have limited choices for our journey to Luxor and find berths on a traditional dahabiya, a motor-assisted sailing ship. With river traffic on the Lower Nile from Luxor to Cairo suspended indefinitely – the result of silting as well as terrorism – we spend the day in Karnak and the Valley of the Kings and the night in a sleeper train to the capital.

Ten years ago, the Pyramids at Giza stood alone in the desert. Nowadays they’re part of Greater Cairo, a city of 25 million people and 5 million cars. Deprived of the empty horizons we’d become accustomed to, we tackle the gridlock on the airport road: it’s time to go home.

NEW Men’s Frontier Shirt Long SleeveColours: Cargo (shown), Sandstone and Dusky Blue

£65; code: 03889

The new Frontier Shirt is a worthy successor to our acclaimed Overland Shirt. An enhanced design makes it the ultimate shirt for trekking and walking, from the chill of the UK to the heat of the equator, whether humid or dry.

The sleeves adjust from full length to short with tabs. And the gently shaped hem looks great tucked or untucked.

For women, the Sanctuary Shirt is a high-performance outdoor trekking shirt. Back and front darts for shaping ensure that it looks as good as it feels. And the two button-down chest pockets with rollover flaps provide secure valuable stowage.

Both shirts are innately fast drying, and benefit from Dynamic Moisture Control,™ delivering rapid and permanent wicking for hot weather comfort. They also feature our durable BiteGuard™ finish to repel ants, flies and midges, as well as disease-carrying ticks and mosquitoes. With a UPF 40+ rating, they also offer excellent UV protection. And the combination of polyamide and polyester fibres make for a strong and durable fabric that washes easily and dries rapidly with no need to iron.

Our Trailblazers blend tough polyamide and stretchy elastane, to offer complete freedom of movement and hard-wearing durability.

A VIEW TO A THRILL

‘TO BE A TRUE CITIZEN OF ST. PETERSBURG YOU MUST DO TWO THINGS,’ says my guide, as we stand among the chimneystacks of an elegantly wasting art nouveau mansion. ‘You must have shared a communal apartment – the traditional way of meeting writers, artists and musicians. And you must have walked on the city’s rooftops.’

The bohemian flat-share presents a challenge in the circumstances, but the urban mountaineering is gloriously simple. ‘Roofers’, or ‘stalkers’ – entrepreneurial young locals who have alchemised a private passion into a tourist adventure – lead climbs on St. Petersburg’s baroque and neoclassical buildings, providing uncluttered views

of the World Heritage-listed city. Some stencil their details on pavements, but I’ve played safe, using a company recommended by a British tour operator.

The pastime is, as fashion-conscious types say, very on-trend. Lubricated by social media, a new generation is gleefully embracing the historic art of congregating on high. ‘I used to roof climb as a teenager,’ says Mikael, a forty-something taxi driver en route to my hotel. ‘Sometimes we’d stay up there all night to watch the sunrise. It was freedom. Now I’m older I worry about heights.’

Ah yes, the six-storey drops. For the moment the whiff of fear is overwhelmed by the heady scent of John Le Carré. On arrival I receive an

enigmatic text: ‘roof walk. 4.08.1800. Vladimirskaya metro station. Roofer will connect with you.’

He does. His name is Sergey Genkin. He uses forged keys to access buildings and his skills as an IT engineer to ‘neutralise’ security alarms. After weaving past Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s former apartment, a day spa and photocopy shop, we slip unnoticed into the courtyard of a magnificent mansion whose rusting wrought iron balconies and Parisian-style cupola create an ornate Hammer House of Horror.

Sergey puts his fingers to his lips. Roof climbing, like wild camping in areas of the UK, is tolerated rather than legal. We must be ‘invisible to the apartments’ owners’. After ascending an anodyne staircase in total silence, passing a sign: ‘look after your children they can fall from

windows’, we clamber onto the roof through a dormer frescoed with graffiti.

The warm sunlight hits me first; then the unnerving height. The front roof ’s tin sheets slope towards a small rail, the back simply vanishes into thin air. Tangled cables dangle alongside a warning board showing an angry electric spark. Sergey offers reassurance and a strong

arm but I scramble around on all fours before bottom shuffling onto the spine of the roof. I peer down, clench my buttocks and breathe slowly.

If it’s bad for me, it’s worse for Katerina from Ukraine. Our tour’s other member sports spectacularly inappropriate knee-high velvet boots, along with denim hot pants and a designer handbag. You won’t find that on Helvellyn.

After several white-knuckle minutes, I slowly relax. My stalker reveals which wires and chimney bricks are safe to grip. ‘Hold these two and you’ll walk along the correct part of the roof. Don’t worry, it supports heavy winter snow, but you must know where to tread. It can be dangerous. This roof is more about views than long walks’.

He’s not joking. After leaning against a ventilation

shaft to scale a small wall, I gaze across a skyline punctuated by five cathedrals, the Admiralty’s golden spire and distant masts of the Aurora, the cruiser whose gunfire heralded the start of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Our immediate neighbour, the green domed Arctic and Antarctic Institute, is soon to return to its original role as an Orthodox Church. ‘Perhaps

we’ll soon see a priest climbing on top,’ deadpans Sergey.

As we bask in early evening sun, he explains why St. Petersburg is the ultimate roofing city: the lack of skyscrapers to obstruct views, kilometres of connected courtyards and Russia’s refreshing attitude to property ownership. ‘Spot someone on your roof in Britain and you would call the police. Here people don’t mind so much.’

For our second climb we head along Marata Street. Just past an advertisement for Jägermeister, we nip into a pastel yellow apartment block. Six storeys above we file through the attic where Lenin’s portrait adorns the fuse box. The view is still superb – we’re directly above Nevsky Prospect – St. Petersburg’s Bond Street – but this is more about walking, with four courtyards linking

wider, gently pitched roofs. It’s far less intimidating.

As we set off, Sergey explains the hypnotic pull of ‘roofing’. For many it’s taking spectacular photographs, others enjoy the varied climbs, while a few relish the buzz of scaling dangerous and famous buildings. ‘I’m a mix of motivations,’ he admits, recalling climbs on Kazan Cathedral and above Palace Square. ‘The guards shouted at us and raised their rifles, but didn’t fire.’

Today he’s calm, cool and safety conscious (although he does pose for pictures by hanging off the building with an arm and leg above the void). We complete the square, climbing up to a higher level on a homemade wire ladder with a TV aerial for support. Fun now trumps fear. We pad past Aleksandr Pushkin’s old flat on a stretch of dazzling new tin, and reach our tour’s end. We’ve walked almost a kilometre. Had we time there are enough joined courtyards to complete three more.

Hours later I’m sitting on the neon-fringed rooftop bar of the W Hotel, next to St. Isaac Cathedral’s vast, floodlit dome. The view is astounding. But fashionable waiters and ambient music rather ruin the moment. It’s just too tame. Give me forged keys, rusty tin and tangled cables. It’s what a true St. Petersburg local would want.

Be Abo (007 812 4497788, b-abo.com) offers the 90-minute tour for £14. For safety, they don’t operate in rain, or during the depths of winter when there is ice and snow.

Located at the junction of Glasgow’s best-loved shopping streets - Argyle Street and Buchanan Street - the Centre is home to an unrivalled range of exclusive stores as well as cafes and restaurants.

Another practical benefit is that parking in the centre is one of the most reasonably priced in the city.

Rohan adventure is the art of creating a bigger life by carrying less stuff. That means carefully considering everything you need and

taking nothing you don’t. This is liberating whether you are setting off on a grand journey of discovery or simply planning to improve

the way you travel through your life every day.
