Welcome to the Gryphon Games & Comics Warhammer Rogue Trader Tournament rules document. This document is intended for peo-ple interested in participating at a Gryphon tour-nament to better understand what to expect as well as what is expected from them.

The primary reason we run tournaments is to give the people who play at Gryphon a chance to bring their best to the table, show their skills and have a lot of fun doing it! As such we’ve put together a rules set that takes into account not only skill at play, but painting, conversion work and attitude. I hope you enjoy playing at Gry-phon as much as I enjoy running tournaments!

If you have any questions regarding tournament play at Gryphon please contact Sherman at (970) 224-3599or e-mail [email protected].

Tournament Overview

Tournament entry is normally $10 per person in both regular and doubles play.

Tournaments consist of three rounds of play us-ing a set number of points as prescribed by the format. Generally 1,750 for 40K, 2,000 for Fan-tasy and two lists of 1,000 each for team tour-naments in either system. Each round will pres-ent a new scenario. Balanced armies that can work towards different objectives at the same time are highly encouraged for that reason.

At the end of every round of play players will be asked to not only score their success at the giv-en scenario, but also to judge their opponent’s Army Theme, Composition and Sportsmanship.

At the end of the second round of play, players will be asked to choose their favorite army from those present at the tournament.

At the end of the third round of play, players will be asked to choose their favorite opponent from those that they played.

Objective Points/Battle Points

Objective Points are used in 40K to determine the overall winner of a game. Objective Points are divided between Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Objectives. Only one player in a game can receive points for the Primary Objective, though both can score points for the Secondary and Tertiary Objectives.

Battle Points in Fantasy games are used owing to the fact that Fantasy does not lend itself well to scenario objectives as the primary way of scoring. Scenarios in Fantasy will generally only add to the overall score when determining the winner.

Tactical Points

Tactical Points are simple add-on points that are the same throughout all scenarios. They can be earned by both players and are an excellent way to win tie-breakers.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship covers all aspects of a player’s style of game. We strive to encourage good game play and a positive atmosphere for our tournaments. Sportsmanship may seem like a difficult thing to judge but we’ve broken it down into several categories to assist in the scoring process.

It should remembered that sportsmanship is not

only fair game play, but also preparedness and attitude. This category includes such things as knowing your army’s rules, fair measurement, and keeping the game fun for your opponent.

Theme

Theme is probably the most difficult thing to judge about your opponent’s army. We’ve made every effort to make this as easy as possible.

As a rule of thumb, theme encompasses those things about your army that make it unique and your own. A good theme should relay some-thing about your choice in force above and be-yond simply being models from the same army list.

We ask that everyone come to the tournament with a good idea about what their army theme is and a way to explain it to their opponents. Bring a paragraph describing your army if you’re prone to forget how to describe it! Special mod-eling and painting that contributes to the army’s theme will also contribute to the overall score for theme.

Composition

An army is judged on composition because sometimes people are just overly creative in their army construction! We discourage anyone from taking army builds that are frustrating to play against simply because the rules allow for it. Any army that seems to take advantage of inherent flaws in the rules or that otherwise tries to “break” the game should be judged poorly for Composition. Competitive armies are encour-aged, but there are definitely builds that are over the top and should therefore be avoided.

Appearance

Painted armies are highly encouraged for par-ticipation in tournament play but are never re-quired for participation. Painting figures promi-nently into overall scores for the tournament and the rules for painting are fairly draconic. Fully painted armies are far preferable to un-painted armies with a few nicely painted models

in them.

Armies will be broken down into three basic cat-egories by a judge:

Unpainted. Any army that has any unpainted models in it whatsoever will be judged as being Unpainted.

Rushed. Any army that has full paint coverage but that appears rushed to “table-top quality” will be judged as being Rushed. This includes having models with unfinished bases, little or no detail work, sloppy brush strokes, etc.

Painted. Any army with full paint, full basing and an obvious effort to make a fully realized miniature army will be judged as Painted.

After the judged portion of the Appearance score, each participant in the tournament will be asked to choose their favorite army from those present. Those choices will add to both the overall Appearance scores as well as contribute to a Player’s Choice Award.

Awards and Prizes

Awards will be based on overall success as well as points awarded for judged painting and the choices for Favorite Appearance and Favorite Opponent made by other players.

Prizes are awarded in the form of Gift Certifi-cates as determined by the total number of par-ticipants in the tournament.

Games Workshop is kind enough to provide ad-ditional prize support. We divide the total value of that added prize support across an estimated 9 RTT events throughout the year.

Please take a moment to acquaint your-self with the general scoring rules before coming to a tournament. Doing so will not only speed up the tournament, but it will also give you a better understanding of what you should be striving for while playing!

RTT Prize Support

If we have less than eight people in attendance for a tournament it will be cancelled (hasn’t happened yet...)

Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the tournament in the form of Gift Certificates to Gryphon Games & Comics.

Each player is only eligible to win in one category. Prizes will be given out in descending order from Tournament Champion, Best General, Player’s Choice, Best Army, Best Sportsman and finally Best Appearance meaning that if the person who takes Player’s Choice also happens to have the highest overall Appearance score, then Best Appearance will go the person with the next highest score.

The Best Sportsman category will be added to any tournament with 14 or more players.

Best Appearance will be added to any tournament with 21 or more players.
