08 IN PICTURESAt the start of November, Felbermayr in Nu-remberg transported a 407-ton transformerfrom the Siemens plant to the port. Beforethen, transporting such loads over the Mi-nerva bridge was a delicate process. In themeantime, this section of road has beenstructurally modified by Siemens specifi-cally for the transport of these types oflarge transformers. On arrival at the port,the transported transformer, commissio-ned by Z&B, was transferred to an inlandwater vessel for further transport using theLR 1750 crawler crane.

Right from the start, the engines are runningand we will do more than meet our targets forthe current financial year – we will exceedthem. And so we would like to say thanks– toour customers, suppliers and employees. Wemust thank you for the fact that we have sofar been able to overcome the deep implicati-ons of the general financial crisis, apart froma few small blemishes. So, where is this cri-sis? Have we overlooked or missed some-thing? Or has the crisis been created by themedia – a self-fulfilling prophecy from politici-ans who considered the assessment by Ame-rican rating agencies to be more important

than the excellent innovation potential of Eu-ropean companies and put the crisis in the li-melight instead? It is likely that the truth liessomewhere in between. We cannot deny thatthere is a crisis and it hovers above our headsas a constant threat.

But it is about time that the leadership inEurope grew up, believed in themselves, com-plied with the defined regulations and don’tsimply demand that the citizens do so. If thishappens, trust in governments will grow, thesense of identity will be strengthened and unitycan be found in the implementation of forthco-

ming reforms. Change is necessary. But thepanic in our minds must give way to clear ob-jectives in the sense of a unified Europe. Ourfaith in the economy has grown. This was alsoa necessity so that we could continue to growduring a difficult time, to establish new sitesand to continue to invest. But we will tacklethese things together. A new year, packed withmany challenges, lies in front of us– and welook forward to success!

With this in mind, we would like to wishyou a Merry Christmas and all the verybest for 2012.

BUSY BUSYNEW LOCATIONS IN GERMANY

In the first quarter of 2011, Kamenz and Görlitz were added to the list of locations in Germany.Schwarze Pumpe near Spremberg followed in June. These locations are considered as a stra-tegic expansion to Germany and thereby will expand the market presence of the Bautzen lo-cation, founded in 2005. The operational management of these locations combined, the"Lausitz Region", is administrated by long-standing Felbermayr colleagues Lothar Fleischerand Enrico Bräuer. The field of services provided are crane and stage rentals as well as settingup and transport.

TRANSPORTExpansion of rail terminal

For the erection of a further gantrycrane at the Wels container terminal,

Felbermayr carried out around twentytransport operations from July to theend of August. Felbermayr will also becalled on for the assembly of the variouselements, weighing up to 25 tons – a mo-bile crane with a load capacity of 350tons provided the fitters with the supportthey needed to assemble the crane.

AWARD-WINNINGFELBERMAYR – ALEADING COMPANY

In October, Managing Director WolfgangSchellerer accepted the certificate on be-half of Felbermayr at the Johannes-KeplerUniversity in Linz. According to the »Leit-betriebe Austria« (Leading Companies ofAustria), Felbermayr was presented withthis award due to their outstanding econo-mic success and their strong reputationwhen it comes to exemplary and innova-tive character.

MANAGERS IN SPADESGround-breaking ceremony for new assembly unit

The provisional culmination of the many years of collaboration between the machineryand plant engineering company Andritz Hydro and Felbermayr is the construction of a lo-gistics and assembly unit covering an area of over 3,000 square metres. The projectplanned for the Felbermayr heavy load port is primarily designed for the assembly of»large turbo generators with unit weights of up to 500 tons«. In addition to streamliningthe logistics, the direct link between the location and rail, road and water transportationwill make it easy to arrive at the most efficient form of transport from an ecological andeconomic perspective.

SWELTERINGTropical operationfor 250-ton crane

For the construction of a 63-room hotel,an LTM 1250 was used over a period ofaround six weeks at temperatures ofthirty degrees in the shade and with tro-pical levels of humidity. However, theconcrete elements, weighing up to fourtons, were not being lifted into place so-mewhere like Jamaica – but quite closeto Berlin. The mobile crane, stabilisedwith 97.5 tons of ballast, was located inEurope's largest tropical landscape – theTropical Island in Krausnick. The greatestpossible precision was required to per-form the thousand or so lifting operationsto a building height of »just« 107 metres,using the 65-metre long boom and 4-meter long heavy-duty jib. Thanks to theair-conditioned driver's cab, however, itwas possible to erect the 15-metre,three-storey high hotel without the cranedriver succumbing to the effects of heat.

READY FOR THE STAGELIFTING PLATFORM USED FOR TV DOCUMENTARY

In the middle of October, the Stock-im-Eisen-Platz in Vienna was the shooting location for adocumentary about St. Stephen's Cathedral. But for passersby, the Cathedral was not the

star of the show; it was the LTK 103, a work platform with a 103-metre working height, everycentimetre of which was used by the cameraman. The platform was required in order to havethe Cathedral, the Praterstraße and the Kärntnerstraße in sunlight at the same time. Platformdriver Stephan Lux also showed a beaming face to match the perfect sunrise; he had justcome to work from the birth of his son and was operating the platform. His son will be chris-tened Stephan - whether on account of the shooting work or for other reasons we will neverknow - but congratulations are in order in any case.

SPORTSCERTIFIEDPLASTIC SYSTEM

With the Sports Facility Department set upin 2009, Felbermayr is currently in action onbuilding sites in Kärnten and Salzburg. Whilea school sports facility is being built in Lamp-rechtshausen in the Salzburg region, the con-struction of an Austrian federal sports centrein Spittal an der Drau has just begun. Forboth facilities, new plastic systems, whichFelbermayr has had certified by the Österrei-chisches Institut für Schul- und Sportstätten-bau (Austrian Institute for the construction ofSchool and Sports Facilities), are currently inuse. In Faistenau, an all-weather pitch is cur-rently being built with a drainage and wate-ring system and with floodlights and fencing.

SUCTION EXCAVATORReducing costs with a rotary suction pipe cutter

It is well known that working time, and consequently costs, can be massively reduced byusing a suction excavator. In many cases, using a so-called rotary suction pipe cuttercan now make work with the suction excavator even more efficient. It is particularlysuitable for loosening compacted material in places that are difficult to access. It iswhen it comes to creating cylindrical holes, however, that its particular strengths be-come clear. When working with an excavator, for example, a downward-tapering, coni-cal hole was always excavated. With the rotary pipe cutter, it is possible to dig acylindrical hole. Moreover, the material excavated can immediately be transported to thesuction excavator container. This saves the work of loading it onto a truck for removal.The hydraulically-driven rotary pipe cutter made a successful first appearance for theexcavation of 1.7-metre deep holes for street lights in Linz, Austria.

TRANSPORT FLEETHLIFTING TECHNOLOGYIS EXPANDING

With the purchase of four LTM 1350 mo-bile cranes and another LG 1750 heavy-duty crane, Felbermayr has recently beeninvesting in Liebherr machines. While themobile cranes with a 350-ton load capa-city are primarily used by the subsidiariesin Graz, Lanzendorf and Linz, the LG1750will be involved in erecting wind turbinesthroughout Europe. The advantage of the750-ton crane is that it optimises bearingloads for long booms and high lifts.

A THOUSAND KILOMETRESfrom Braunau to Hunedoara

Starting in June, eight injection mouldingmachines belonging to the car interiormanufacturer Dräxlmaier, each weighingup to 52 tons, were shipped from Brau-nau in Austria to Hunedoara in Romania.However, before the journeys on theeight-axle semi low-loader could begin,the machines, which were approximatelysix metres long and around three metreswide, had to be brought out from the carcomponent manufacturer’s unit. To dothis, they were transferred to a self-pro-pelled transporter using two cranes andtransported to the front of the unit fromwhere they were then transferred to thesemi low-loader. Transportation of the in-dividual machines and installation attheir destination was completed by thebeginning of November – a perfect teameffort between the Braunau, Linz,Timişoara and Wels subsidiaries.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERINGEXPANSION FOR HOLTER

In Wels, the structural engineering division is currently building a new office block comprisingan office space of 1,400 square metres for Austria’s largest plumbing and heating wholesaler.The building, which uses prefabricated concrete components, consists of five storeys over abasement. In addition to the site management work, Felbermayr has also received the contractfor the carpentry work, and will assemble the 24-metre long, 5-metre wide timber roof elementsfor the construction of the roof. When work on the grounds is completed next spring, the buildingwill be ready for occupancy after a total construction period of twelve months.

At the beginning of September, the »Vereinigung der Straßenbau- und Verkehrsinge-nieure« (Association of Road Construction and Transport Engineers) from Saxony-Anhalttook advantage of the occasion of a trip to Austria to visit the Felbermayr subsidiary inLinz. Firstly, Klaus-Jürgen Reuter, from the Department of Transport for the state of Sa-xony-Anhalt, took a photo of the construction-related possibilities at Felbermayr. Howe-ver, they were also interested in getting the latest news on trimodal transport and inusing the world's highest work platform to enjoy the view of the heavy load port.

The aim of the project is to extendthe A line to the north-west. In thecourse of the works, nine new

stations are to be built, starting from theDejvicka station. When the Motol Hospitalis reached, after approximately 6 kilome-tres of tunnel construction, the firstsection will go into service in 2014. Pa-tients will then be able to get to the hos-pital by underground and will no longerhave to depend on a car or the bus. In thefinal phase of construction, the line is torun to the Letišťě Ruzyně station at Pra-gue airport. The construction project isbeing carried out by Metrostav, one of thebiggest construction companies in theCzech Republic.

400 lifting operationsfor tunnelling machine

»In the Czech Republic, we don’t have acrane that can lift the 50-ton cuttingwheels without a derrick boom or onethat can be combined with a crawler me-chanism and pedestal outrigger«, explainsMichal Prusa of the Felbermayr subsidiaryin Brünn. The derrick boom is generally fit-ted behind the main boom. However,there would not have been any room forthis at the construction site in the middleof Prague, so the Felbermayr LR1750 was

chosen. The crane was on the con-struction site from January to July. Prusawent on »It was used every day to carryout a number of lifting operations«. But itwas the cutting wheels, with a diameterof around six metres, that were the hea-viest. In order to assemble the tunnellingmachines underground, a 34-metre deep,21-metre diameter assembly shaft had tobe created. To assemble it, the drilling pla-tes were lifted off the low-loader directlyand lowered into the shaft. The »Tonda«was the first of the two tunnelling machi-nes to be assembled. The »Adela« follo-wed about three months later. The twocutting wheels were named after twochildren who were being treated for leu-kaemia at the Motol Hospital. »By theway, it was the Felbermayr subsidiary,BauTrans (commissioned by the long-standing partner, MSG), which transpor-ted the tunnelling machine« added Pruse,who was delighted with the support forhis colleagues from Lauterach.

16-ton forklift trucks

In addition to three other stackers, theF-16 GSD was accompanied by anothergiant in its class – a forklift truck with 16tons of lifting power. This is an ideal ma-chine for moving the lining segments, asthe prefabricated concrete segmentsused for tunnel construction are called,and it will therefore remain in service until

the underground section to the hospitalhas been completed. Another remarkablemachine at the construction site is theF-22 TSX/R with its five tons of lifting power –a forklift with a 22-metre lifting height.This forklift truck comes with a turntableso that it can swivel the load through 360degrees. »Metrostav is currently usingthis model from the Felbermayr fleet at aconstruction site in Helsinki« said Prusawhen talking about this powerhouse.

LIFTING TECHNOLOGY

In Prague, work to expand the underground rail system is currently ongoing. To lift the Herrenknecht tunnelling ma-

chine into place, a Liebherr LR 1750, the most powerful crane ever to be used in the Czech Republic, was deployed.

Commissioned by MSG, whose head-quarters are in Kehl, Germany, BauTranswas responsible for transporting the tun-nelling machine to the construction site.

With modern tunnelling machines, it is possible to reach drilling speeds of more than 300 me-tres per month.

Dhat was a major challenge for us«,recalls Josef Kramser of Felber-mayr Specialised Civil Enginee-

ring. And if Kramser says so, then you canbelieve it, because the native of the Möllvalley has been working in Specialised CivilEngineering since 1974 and, in addition torockfall stabilisation work at the peak of the3,100-metre Sonnblick mountain, he hasmanaged many other construction sites lo-

cated between heaven and earth. With upto 28 colleagues at any one time, he wor-ked on the project of the Austrian group’smodel company for two years.

Avalanche and rockfall stabilisation

The work started with the creation of thetwelve-kilometre access road from the val-ley to the construction depot and on to

Schoberboden at 2,200 metres above sealevel. »In logistical terms, this was very diffi-cult because numerous excavators, dum-pers and such like were in operation at thesame time and there was very little room forour equipment and materials. What’s more,the tight deadlines meant that it was onlypossible to transport equipment at night«,said Kramser as he described the challen-ges. In spite of this, once they started in

June, they succeeded in completing thework by the following December. In Decem-ber, they could then start work on buildingthe construction depot as planned. Beforethey could do this, they had to install appro-ximately 1,100 metres of rockfall fencing,around 5,000 square metres of rockfall sta-

bilisation and a1,200-metre avalan-che barrier. A further700 metres were in-stalled in the springof 2011. Ten thou-sand metres of an-chors, 45 tons ofreinforcement and1,500 cubic metresof shotcrete werealso used, all testi-mony to an enor-mous logisticalchallenge in an areathat was partly loca-ted in the high Alps.As Kramser was in aposition to report,the original planswere not quite soextensive. It wasonly in the course ofthe operations toprovide accessroads that the forcesof nature that wouldhave to be reckonedwith became clear –meaning that thestabilisation measu-res were considera-

bly expanded. In undertaking the necessarymeasures, the enormous experience ofKramser and his colleagues stood them ingood stead: »We had overcome similar chal-lenges with the Limber II storage powerplant and that simplifies things« explains theconstruction manager.

The centrepiece: the cavern

At around 1,600 metres above sea level,deep inside the mountain, the pumped sto-rage power plant’s power station is beingbuilt at a depth of 200 metres. At 58 metreslong, 25 metres wide and 43 metres high, itis like a cathedral carved out of rock. Whenthe power station has been completed, thetwo machine sets located here, each withan output of 215 megawatts, will increasethe total power output of the power stationgroup from 1,029 megawatts to 1,459 me-gawatts. To assemble the power stationcomponents, a craneway was required. Forthis, the Felbermayr Specialised Civil Engi-neering employees installed 58 strand an-chors totalling 2,000 metres in length withina time frame of 14 days in June 2011. Im-pressive figures for an impressive project –a project with which the umbrella organisa-tion has given a stimulus to the entire regio-nal economy, as well as supplying electricity.The pumped storage power plant is to becommissioned in the autumn of 2014.

Someone who knows what it's all about:Christian Kurzthaler was already part ofthe construction management team whenthe Zillergrund power station was built.Later on, he managed many major con-struction sites, such as the Gerlos II powerstation, the Freudenau Danube power sta-tion, the WM construction site for the St.

Anton rail installation and Limberg II. Toget-her with four batch construction managers,geologists and technicians, he now hasjoint responsibility for the successful com-pletion of the Reißeck II power station.

»The requirements are extremely high«,says the 58-year old from east Tirol, and hecomes straight to the point: »While normaltunnel work generally only involves drillingone bore through the mountain, here wehave to drill up, down and every possibledirection. What's more, we have to copewith an enormous variety of geological for-mations. The technologies range from cut-and-cover tunnelling using a tunnellingmachine to conventional tunnelling invol-ving drilling and blasting, and various spe-

cialised civil engineering methods. Fre-quently, the mountain does not conformto the specifications on paper and incases such as this, in particular, we haveto look for technically feasible alternati-ves and find solutions. But ropes and he-licopters are also part of the employees'working tools. To protect against the for-ces of nature, numerous different stabili-sation measures need to be taken, mostlyinvolving rockfall and avalanche barriers.From an ecological perspective, we arealso required to meet with strict conditi-ons in relation to protecting the alpineflora and fauna with a view to ensuringthat, just a few years after completion ofthe construction work, the interferencewith nature will no longer be visible.«

Administration building built using the formwork table systemAustria's leading natural stone processor, with registered offices in the upper Austrian town of St. Martin, is building a new

unit. Felbermayr Structural Engineering was awarded the contract for the construction of the administration building, com-

prising around 2,500 square metres. Work to construct the shell should be completed as early as November of this year.

Around 400 ceiling supports were required to erect the prefabricated formwork tables. Ac-cording to foreman Wolfgang Mayr, another striking feature on the construction site wasthe MK 88: »This mobile construction crane is ready for use within half an hour and canstill lift 1,500 kilograms to a height of 45 metres« said Mayr as he declared himself veryhappy with the efficiency and flexibility of the lifting device.

With more than 160 employees,the Mühlviertel company Stras-ser is the largest processor of

natural stone in Austria. Their products rangefrom kitchen worktops to a comprehensivearray of natural stone for the building mate-rials trade. In order to bring administrationand production together in one location, theyare currently building a new office block.

Applied Specialised Civil Engineering

Felbermayr was awarded the contracts forthe structural engineering, civil engineeringand specialised civil engineering work. Spe-cialised civil engineering was required be-cause the load-bearing capacity of thesubsoil was inadequate. »Using vibro dis-placement compaction methods, 350gravel piles were driven into the soil to adepth of around twelve metres,« said Ro-bert Stürzlinger, explaining the solution.Using this as a basis, the foundations werethen created over an area of approximately850 square metres.

MK 88 proves its worth

»We then erected 25 reinforced concretecolumns per storey on the one-metre deepfoundations« said Stürzlinger as he explai-ned the requirements for constructing theceiling for the first storey. The Liebherr MK88 proved to be the ideal tool for the structu-ral engineering work. According to Stürzlin-ger: »At eight tons, this crane has a terrificload capacity and owing to its chassis, it canbe manoeuvred easily and quickly on theconstruction site« – capabilities that provedparticularly useful when constructing theslab formwork. On account of the time andcost constraints, the decision came downon the side of the so-called formwork tablesystem. »This type of formwork is particu-larly suitable for a uniform ceiling geometry.The formwork unit only needs to be erectedonce and when it has set, it can then be reu-

sed for the next section. In this way, it waspossible to concrete the three storeys in justseven weeks,« explains Stürzlinger.

Built in a year

When 2,500 square meters of screed hasbeen installed and various interior plasterwork has been completed, the structural en-gineering work will be largely complete bythe end of November. Some foundations willthan be poured for existing warehousing andproduction units. At this point, Felbermayr'sCivil Engineering division will set to workand will start on the exterior design. By theend of April, this work will also be completeand after about one year of construction, thebuilding will be fully ready for occupation.

Inspection cover forweir system is floated into placeIn August, the stilted dredger pontoon »Barbara« and the motor vessel »Grafenau« were used to replace the in-

spection cover, consisting of six stop logs, for the Kachlet weir, north of Passau.

The upstream inspection cover for theKachlet weir system, which wascompleted in 1927, had seen better

days. From a static point of view, the stoplogs were no longer allowed to be used,meaning that a replacement was unavoida-ble. The components manufactured by ourclient, Plauen Stahl Technologie GmbH,were transported to the power station bylow-loader from Plauen, which is around 300kilometres north of Passau. A mobile cranewas used to transfer the inspection covers,weighing approximately 35 tons, to the ship.

Stop logs floated out

First of all, however, the old stop logs had tobe floated out. »To be able to do that, we firsthad to cut out a niche« said construction ma-nager Wolfsteiner, explaining the procedure

used for the mini-excavator employed on the»Barbara«. But the »St. Peter« was also linedup, with a long-armed excavator. Its task wasto clean the weir floors for all six weir fields.

Accurate to within centimetres

For the task of floating the inspection co-vers into place with the required precision,the stilted dredger pontoon »Barbara« offe-red ideal conditions. »It has several winchesto which guiding ropes can be attached onthe bank«, explains Hans Wolfsteiner, com-menting on the operation which was led byFelbermayr Captain Ulrich Feirer. Usingthese ropes, the ship could be guided to theinstallation site with centimetre precisionand the stop logs could be carried by the lif-ting beam. If required, the upstream waterof the weir field could be blocked. For each

of the stop logs, which were arranged sideby side, it took three days to float them inand out.

The stop logs, weighing around 45 tons, were manufactured by the German steel technology company Plauen Stahl. To transport them by waterfrom the transfer point to the power station, transport equipment specially developed for the project was used. The system is owned by the Was-ser- und Schifffahrtsamt Regensburg (Regensburg Water and Shipping Company) and the Federal Water and Shipping Administration.

By using guiding ropes, it was possibleto float the stop logs into place underthe lifting beams with centimetre preci-sion and then lift them up.

Henry Focke and his team make up thecore team of the first Felbermayr con-struction subsidiary in Germany. These em-ployees, who specialise in civilengineering, also have international experi-ence in structural engineering projects andwere also active in civil engineering – forexample, in the construction of the longestbridge in Germany. The sphere of influenceof this motivated team has a radius of ap-proximately 100 kilometres around Leipzig.

Andrea Felbermayr has been a part of the com-pany since May 2010. With effect from 5th No-vember, the wife of Horst Felbermayr DI hasreceived the signing authority for FelbermayrHolding GmbH. This signifies an increased levelof responsibility for the Vorarlberg native. Fur-thermore, it is a significant step towards expan-sion and towards the continued existence of theFelbermayr Group as a family business.
