Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District is a compact, walkable area encompassing the peninsula of Rocky Neck, home of the Rocky Neck Art Colony and the critically acclaimed Gloucester Stage Company on its border. With a concentration of cultural facilities, activities, and assets including galleries and restaurants, the district attracts visitors to enjoy and experience a range of cultural and commercial activities. Directions to Rocky Neck Drive northeast on Route 128 to Gloucester, through two rotaries staying on 128. Go straight through two traffic lights and up the hill on East Main Street, bearing right at the bottom of the hill. Follow East Main for about a mile as it curves around the harbor. Many artists and businesses are located along East Main Street. Turn right onto Rocky Neck Ave., park in the public parking lot, and explore the many shops and galleries on the Neck. ROCKY NECK ART COLONYRocky Neck is home to one of the oldest continuously operating art coloniesin the United States. Situated on a peninsula within Gloucester’s working harbor, Rocky Neck is known for its exceptional geographic beauty, its uniqueand penetrating light, a rich cultural history and a spirited, committed, andsupportive community. Notable plein air artists including Winslow Homer,Edward Hopper, Frank Duveneck, Childe Hassam, as well as Stuart Davis,Milton Avery and many others who lived and worked on Rocky Neck in the19th and early 20th centuries inspired the Cape Ann style of AmericanImpressionism, a critically important contribution to American art history.

Dozens of working artists from painters, potters and textile designers to photographers and jewelry makers, display their work in Rocky Neck galleriesduring the summer months. A variety of restaurants are available to suit every taste with live entertainment enhancing the ambiance in restaurantsand bars on weekends and on the first Thursday of each month, from June to September. Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District offers an eclectic mixture of history and culture—a great place to stroll on a lazy summer day,to include in a day trip to the beach, or to enjoy a memorable meal.

Goetemann Artist in Residency ProgramThree talented artists have been selected from a national pool of applicants to live and work for one month each in the Goetemann Residency Studio,51A Rocky Neck Ave. A distinguished artist/teacher will join us for a weekand provide critiques and workshops. Both the residents and theartist/teacher will give talks and host discussions for the community.

Rocky Neck Artist’s BallThe annual Rocky Neck Artist’s Ball is a decades old tradition that takes afond and irreverent look at our history and today’s culture. It’s a wonderfulway to celebrate summer with an evening of costume (optional), great food,dancing, prizes, and friendly company. Directions to Rocky NeckDrive northeast on Route 128 to Gloucester, through two rotaries staying on128. Go straight through two traffic lights and up the hill on East Main Street,bearing right at the bottom of the hill. Follow East Main for about a mile as it curves around the harbor. Many artists and businesses are located alongEast Main Street. Turn right onto Rocky Neck Ave., park in the public parkinglot, and explore the many shops and galleries on the Neck.
