Not only did we have an amazing turnout, but sales were successful as well. At least 5 sales were closed: 2 paintings (one in the entrance

hallway from the Master’s show and one in the Magnum Opus), a sale from the Ken Potter exhibit, a ceramic piece in Magnum Opus, and at least one gift shop sale.

I hope everyone who entered and came to see the Old Masters Show enjoyed it; I certainly did. I was very impressed with the quality of the art, and how the artists really understood what we were trying to do in this show.

Thank you to everyone who entered and all the volunteers who helped. Because of all of you this was a wonderful show. I am looking forward to next year’s show which will hang for 3 weeks. The dates will be May 17–June 4 2016.

Sincerely, your reluctant show chair

What if I told you on January 1 that if you gave me $60, I would give you more than $400 back by the end of the year? Would you be skeptical and say it’s too good to be true? Well, that is just what you get for being part of SFAC. We spend more than $400 per member to provide you with the best art experience we can provide. But there is a catch. In order to reap your rewards, you need to participate. You need to

take advantage of Hang Out and Do Art, take workshops, enter shows, meet and socialize with fellow artists and volunteer. That is the secret to getting a 15-fold return on your investment. And guess what? It’s fun, too! So, I encourage you to take advantage of all we offer.

The board and I would like to know what we can do to make your experience better. Are there other art styles and mediums you’d like to explore? Is there art-related education that you’d like but we don’t offer? Are there other activities you’d like? Let me know. Send a note to me at [email protected] or send a note to me through the SFAC office. We’ll see what we can do to accommodate. We want to be a living organism that serves your interests. So, help us understand how to do that.

About The Art Journal

The board and I are working hard to make our newsletter relevant and interesting. We plan in the upcoming issues to place more emphasis on your art by highlighting more artwork, particularly show ribbon winners.

We are also looking for more interesting articles. If you have an idea, or are looking for information, drop us a note—or, contribute an article for publication!

A downside to this: the newsletter will increase in size, and thus increase our printing and postage costs. We are looking at ways to reduce this. Hard copies are always available at the Center and of course the newsletter is available on our website. Those who are OK reading the newsletter online will be notified by email when new issues are published. If you prefer to continue to receive a hard copy in the mail, you may: register online, drop us a note in the mail, or call Sharon at 916-971-3813.

We hope to reduce our hard copy mailing list by the first of the year, so please contact us by then to continue receiving hard copies in 2016.

We’ve added a new SFAC Board Member position: Program Chair.

Would you be interested?

Participating as a Board Member provides you with an opportunity to drive the Center, make it exciting and relevant to its members and the community. Make new friends, network and make a difference. Know first hand the opportunities

and needs—add your support as you see fit.

We meet once a month for two hours and have an annual half-day meeting. You’ll volunteer to help with issues and needs as they come up and as you have the availability, skill set and desire.

We are looking for someone with business acumen and interest in

art—who is visionary. Visionary is key to this position as we are hoping this new member can help drive and influence programming.

Please share this with someone you think might be interested, and if you are interested, please call me at 770-851-3443 or email me at [email protected].

Chris Thompson and his committee have been working hard to create our

new young adult program. This three-year program is funded with a matching grant from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. We’ve been working diligently to raise funds including such activities as the recent bus trip to the art museums in San Francisco and workshops.

Focus groups have been conducted to assess what would be of interest and how we might bring in programs and provide support. In August two workshops on the business of art were presented. We met the objectives of these workshops: we generated revenue to support the grant and we attracted our target audience to participate. Richard Turner and Sandy Delehanty freely presented a wealth of information on how to begin thinking about making money from your art, and steps that should be taken.

Our target age group (18–30) can help us fully utilize our facility by scheduling events on Sundays and Mondays. Perhaps a new artists’ group or permanent activities can be part of achievable long-term goals. Perhaps these young artists will

participate in our standing events and enter Center and club shows. We believe that mentorship will be a strong component to our outreach. We are hoping we can engage our membership to take part, especially as mentors—as I’m sure each of us will receive as much from them as they will from us. The synergy will be rewarding!

Below is the program name and statement. Watch for communications in the community and throughout the center about future activities with these identifiers.

Learn, Create, Sell art training for young adults

A program to mentor aspiring artists, ages 16–30, and provide professional instruction, facilities, and studio space. Its goal is to encourage the creation of art and to support building a career in the arts. This opportunity is brought to you by Sacramento Fine Arts Center and is funded by a Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

Please contact Chris Thompson, Program Chair, if you’d like to be a part of this new and exciting program.

Learn, Create, Sell: art training for young adults

San FranciscoMuseums TourA great time was experienced during the recent trip to the WJM Turner exhibit at the De Young and Legion of Honor. The highlight of the tour was Catherine Turrill, Sacramento State Art Department Chair and Art Historian, discussing Turner and the exhibits at both museums. More than 60 participants enjoyed the gourmet lunch by Lido Café and wine and cheese on the way home while listening to an impressive array of stories of art history. Every moment of the trip, from start to finish, was an enjoyable experience.

The trip reached many artists and art lovers who were not members of the SFAC, as approximately 50% of the participants were non-members. Larry Klink shared information on the Sacramento Fine Arts Center and upcoming exhibits and calls to artists. Profits from this trip are earmarked for the Sacramento Fine Art Center’s new Learn, Create, Sell program, which is art training for young adults.

We hope to have more of these trips to bring artists and art historians together for a wonderful learning experience.

At our last meeting we had an interesting discussion about the place that textiles has in the art world. Many still see it as a craft or what little old ladies do in their rocking chairs. Many of the artists who are involved in the newer processes are east of the Mississippi. That‘s not to say that there isn’t much happening out here, but the East Coast does have many art schools that are on the cutting edge.

But, as we found out when Jiyoung Chung was here, all it takes to have some of them come to us is just “ask.” I am hoping that as we take advantage of well-known textile artists we will also bring more understanding of the world of textiles.

Next meeting I plan to bring 2 T-shirts that I just did some eco-dyeing. May not be your style but they sure are not white any more! Really works if you want a surprise at the results!

More next time!

President’s MessageThis morning I opened my windows and the clear scent of autumn filled my room. Did you ever notice that each of the seasons has its own scent? I like the scent of

autumn best. It takes me back to my school days. As I stood at my window and looked out, thoughts began to run through my mind. Mentally I was standing in front of my paint box pulling out tubes of Cadmium orange, Cadmium yellow deep, Naples yellow. On and on I went through the pallet of fall colors. Then I recalled my days of plein air painting in the Sierras. Donner summit and Cisco Grove are calling. I don’t know if you have ever taken the drive to Lake Tahoe in the fall, but I have found groves of trees in autumn colors that easily match or exceed anything I have seen in New England. It all starts around the second week in October. One of my favorite groves is near Camp Richardson. It is a spot called the Stream Profile. Its a place where they have constructed a viewing building that goes underground. As you enter, you are actually standing under the river looking through thick glass windows, watching the fish and turtles swim by. But the real excitement is above the bunker along the river paths. The autumn trees are magnificent. And you have the river and the mountains beyond to consider. But if you are not a fancier of plein air painting, then by all means, take your camera and go gather dozens of photos for reference material in the comfort of your studio.

Life seems to ramp up to a much busier pace as we move toward the holidays. By Halloween the Christmas decorations are already turning up in the mall. I am reminded that it is time to decide what to paint for my annual Christmas card. I send out about 40 or 50 cards to my family and friends. Over the years I hear from them that they have framed my cards or have a collection in a scrap book. And if I leave someone off the list or just forget them, I hear about it. So it has become an annual gift that I give. I choose a greeting card size paper and envelope. When the card is folded, it is 5” X 7” and fits perfectly in the envelope. I have entered my mailing list on my trusty computer and it prints out the envelopes. I

choose a canvas size that is approximately the same ratio as the card. That would be a 10” X 14” or a 16” X 20”.

When the painting is completed I take it to Copy Plus at 6526 Fair Oaks Blvd. Mel is the proprietor. If I use the smaller canvas size, Mel can plop it right on his big scanner and send a perfect image to his computer. If I use the larger size canvas, he pulls out his camera and documents my small work of art. Last year I shot the photo and took it to Mel on a Flash drive. Mel types in my greeting and the credit notes for the back/bottom side of the card. And it is done. Within minutes he prints out a sample copy for my approval. When everything is OK, he is ready to print. “You can pick everything up tomorrow,” he says, and so I do. NCA member and Board V.P. John Reed has had Mel print a couple of his paintings of the guest ranch where he and his wife Dawn went for years. That guest ranch has been selling John’s cards in their gift shop for a couple of years now. So the possibilities of turning our paintings into greeting cards are limited only by our creative imagination. Now is the perfect time to plan and start your painting for your Christmas greeting card. TOM THOMPSON, NCA President

Art Sense From Gretchen Vacation is over and we need to get back to the drawing board. Thank goodness we collected fresh and interesting ideas during summer. Now, lets see all your exciting, new ideas in drawing and painting at the Fine Arts Center. Gretchen

Thank You, VolunteersAs Chairperson for NCA’s membership show “Inner Views,” I would like to thank the volunteers that helped to make the show a success: Dawn Reed, Joan McMurray, Mary Wang-Steele, Tom Thompson, Roger Rehm, Marie Crockett, Jim Johnson, Jan Miller, Rhonda Egan, Susan Davis, Sally Durante, Carla Nabity, John Reed, Diana Blasingame, Diana Holt, Judy Sowa, Joann Cochran, Donna Hollingsworth, Barbara Marshall, Kathi Bristow, Ruth Morrow, Sandi Mathiesen, Jan Dailey, and especially Ann Bissett-Clark for preparing the show catalog. Barbara Leach

Did You Know?I have admired Skip Lee’s huge abstract paintings for years. His work is accepted into almost every show he enters, and has even received a Best Of Show award for one of his paintings. His recently displayed painting in the SFAC foyer was of a young boy in a swimming pool playing water polo. It is unlike anything I had ever seen Skip paint. It was from this single canvas that I realized what a broad and varied skill Skip has with his vast array of painting styles. But where did it all start?

Skip was born in Sacramento, in the Woodlake area of North Sacramento. But did you know that for 50 years Skip was in the paper business with a couple of the major U.S. paper manufactures as a sales rep. During his growing up years, his dad worked part time for the North Sacramento Journal where he wrote a column and also set type. Young Skip began to hang out at the newspaper office and became fascinated with printing and that whole industry. His dad taught him how to run the linotype machine. That’s the huge, noisy machine that back then turned hot molten lead into lines of type. On the wall at the newspaper office was posted a poem titled, “Ode To A Printer.” The opening line said, “The blood in my veins is ink. . .” and so it became for young Skip. At 15 Skip turned his family garage into a small print shop and

began to create business cards, letterheads, advertising flyers, campaign posters and every form of print that his tiny shop and his level of skill could handle. As a side venture, Skip got hired by the local Safeway store to hand letter signs that promoted specials and sale items. “Bananas 19 cents a pound” in big red letters outlined in black on butcher paper was a typical sign turned out while he kneeled on the cement floor in the produce department. And he got paid fifty cents a sign. And talk about creative marketing, Skip saw an opportunity to turn his drawing skills into money. Each day he passed a kitchen gadget and equipment store like William Sonoma. One day he walked in and spoke with the store manager. “I have a proposal for you that will make more people stop and come into your store.” The puzzled manager asked, “How you gonna do that?” “I’m an artist and I could set up my drawing board in the front window of your store and invite people to come in and have their

portrait drawn in twenty minutes. I would charge them for the sitting then give a percentage of my fee to the store for the use of the space.” With no previous experience in this intensive kind of art, he started. By the time he had done more than 200 portraits, Skip realized he had found his calling. He certainly learned to get a likeness and get it quickly.

The turning point in Skip’s life that moved him from commercial print to fine art happened when he attended American River College. His chemistry teacher asked, “Skip, what do you plan to do with your life? With the grades you are getting in chemistry, I don’t think medicine is for you. Have you ever thought about art? ” And that was the turning point.

After American River College Skip received a scholarship to enroll at the school of Arts And Crafts in Oakland.Since then, Skip has shown his work in many of the major galleries in the Sacramento area. But most importantly, as a past President of NCA in 1999 and a current Board member, his years of experience and highly developed art skills have made him a beacon to encourage others of us to keep right on trying. Thanks for that gift, Skip. Tom Thompson

The object is to cut through all the others who are crowding out a site from at-tracting the target Paying Client. We must be seen to be able to market to Clients who are seeking our wares. Some folks think they might trick the Spider Bots by repeating the most popular keywords in the metadata thereby getting a higher ranking. Spi-ders are smarter! The current practice involves something known as ‘Long Tail Keywords’. Try tricking the Bots and they will rate you poorly!

What’s it? You may rightly ask. Rather than merely jotting Bird Photo-graph or Flowers Photos, a precise, definitive, idiosyncratic keyword phrase might be Asian Crested Ibis at Dawn, Rothchild’s Orchid in the Wilds of Malaysia or Full Moon on Scotts Rd, Rancho Murrieta. This is a laser- fo-cused beacon to those who may have their wallets at the ready to make such a purchase in lieu of the conventional Lookie Loo.

Local SEO is relevant for those who are efforting an audience that is [pardon the obvious] more local. Search engines’ highest priority is to provide the best result for the input inquiry. Careful categorization of your business aligns your keyword strategies with the identifying techniques of search engines.

Here are sites you want to check out in your quest to get a good index ranking on search engines. Many sites [E.g. DuckDuckGo] use the index-ing of Google, Bing and Yahoo, therefore it behooves you to submit to the Big Kahunas of Topical Search Engine Island. NAP [name, address, phone number] is a citation listing in Chamber of Commerce website, publishing on Google Maps, being listed in a directory, news article mentioning you or your listing website on SFAC! It doesn’t have to have a link to your site but Google determines that your content is important. Look for those directo-ries [e.g. YP, Google My Business] that list you for free.

Research those who are in your preferred category to find their search keywords and to see if they are being reviewed or if there are article writ-ten about them that drive people to their site. This is your conduit to what makes their success/failure and how you can improve. [E.g. Family portrait photographer in Roseville]. Be cognizant to conform to Best Practices, as: have a site map [site map is a page that shows how pages in the site are laid out] and be sure you have Contact Info. H

FALL WORKSHOP WITH SONJA HAMILTONSonja will be presenting a workshop for WASH on Saturday, November 21 from 9:30-3:30. Her plan is to paint fast and loose. She will demonstrate wet-into-wet flowers in the morning and work on a tighter floral in the afternoon. Cost is $55 for WASH members and $65 for non-members. Contact Joyce Wilson at 482-8092 or e-mail Joyce at [email protected] if you are interested in attending the workshop.

18th ANNUAL HENRY FUKUHARA WORKSHOP by Rebecca JaggersIn May I attended a plein air watercolor workshop in Lone Pine that was begun by Henry Fukuhara when he was 85 years old, now carried on by his students and associates who he has inspired. This event has grown year after year and this year there were perhaps 75 other participants. There were demonstrators, locations and critiques every day. The day we painted at Manzanar, one of the internment camps for Japanese-Americans during WWII, I was really quite moved. The climate and conditions are hardly described by the words extreme and harsh, set at the base of Mt. Whitney and other 14,000-foot peaks, breathtakingly spectacularly beautiful. All the barracks except one have been removed but there is still sign of people who were holding onto hope and dignity, an orchard, a ‘pleasure garden’ a vegetable garden. There is a monument there now to those who died while interred. The influence of Fukuhara is evident in demonstrators and former students painting styles. It was an incredible experience, all work was donated due to the love of Henry.

ATTENTION ALL WASH MEMBERSWe have a few positions open on our board including most importantly, the PRESIDENT. Other positions anticipated are a Liaison with the SFAC Board, (a new position for 2016), and possible other positions as the time approaches. Please consider talking to one of the nomination committee members further about the positions available and the activities of that position. Thank you! WASH: ALIVE AND WELL by Patty LarsenAs WASH members we can be proud that our 37 year old organization continues to be a truly successful organization. Like the name of our Open Show, GO WITH THE FLOW, our dynamic organization has continued to grow and change with its members and the community around it, Still fully committed to our original objectives--to share a common love of the watercolor medium, promote creative growth of our members, and to provide art-focused educational services--we continually look for new ways of facilitating these objectives. A notable example can be seen in the recent move to using an online entry system for the Open Show. The WASH Board had considered taking this step several times over the last few years but hesitated because of the unknowns regarding costs and the effect of change on our members and art community. This year, however, with the thoughtful (and courageous) leadership of our current Show Co-chairpersons, Teresa Steinbach-Garcia and Rose Sloan, we felt that the time was right. The Show Committee did an excellent job of assisting our members to make the change and so far it seems to have been a good step to take. We will be evaluating everything related to this change and would appreciate hearing from you. What do you think about the use of the online entry system?

Another example of what has kept WASH a living, breathing organization is the care and thought that has been put into providing programs of interest to our members. Currently we are in the process of identifying potential guest artists for the 2016 monthly meetings. Diane Tharp, our Program Chair, has challenged us to consider inviting artists whose painting materials or styles may be outside of our usual water media focus. We would love to hear from you as to what and who you might like to see and hear in the next year. For example, would you be interested in learning more about acrylic painting and how it might be used in lieu of traditional watercolor or along with watercolor? What about collage? Are you interested in learning more about combining watercolor and collage techniques?

It is you our members who make WASH what it is and can be. We value your suggestions and comments whether about show entry systems, programs, workshops, or anything else. Let us hear from you.
