Dave Stevens was born on July 29,1955. His career in comics beganin 1975, assisting veteran artist RussManning on the syndicated Tarzannewspaper strip. Stevens went on to toil as an animation storyboardartist, as well as storyboarding theoccasional film, including Raiders of theLost Ark for Steven Spielberg, and thegroundbreaking Michael Jackson musicvideo Thriller.

In 1982, Stevens debuted the feature forwhich he is best known, The Rocketeer.Initially appearing as a backup feature inan independent comic, the pulp-inspiredstory of Cliff Secord, a daring stunt pilotwho finds an experimental rocket pack, became an instant sensation. TheRocketeer went on to star in his owncomic-book series, and in 1991 wouldbecome a well-received major motionpicture from Walt Disney Studios.

Stevens’ lush figure work, particularlywhen rendering the female form, coupledwith his elegant brush line, brought himmuch acclaim far beyond the confines ofcomic books. In particular, his breathyportrayals of Cliff’s girlfriend Betty, inspired by famed pin-up queen BettiePage, helped revitalize interest in the ‘50sicon, a fact openly acknowledged byPage, who became close friends withStevens in her final years.

On March 11, 2008, Dave Stevens lost along battle against Hairy Cell Leukemia.
