Ramadan mubarak
The holy month of Ramadan is due to start in New Zealand on Friday 20 July;
this is subject to confirmation by sighting of the new moon. All of us at
Rocket Science and the Mount Albert Islamic Trust wish all our readers
“Ramadan Mubarak!” May Allah (swt) grant you the rewards for your fasting
and your extra devotional activities during this special month.
We would like to remind readers that the Mount Albert Islamic Trust (Rocket
Park) does not conduct tarawih or Eid prayers.

better each year
fasting is for Me
10 – 700 rewards
Preparing for Ramadan
Insha Allah, Ramadan will be with us on 20 July (to be confirmed). Allah has
enabled us to reach another year of Ramadan, in keeping with our pleadings.
Muslims the world over are looking forward to the extraordinary blessings of
this great month. We are excited. It is the talk of every workplace, our homes,
the markets, the social media on the net – the buzz is on about the arrival of
this blessed month.
However, as we start to engage ourselves with the worship and festivities of
Ramadan, let‟s pause and ask ourselves whether our last year‟s Ramadan was
better than the one before it? How did we strive to make it any better? How
are we going to make Ramadan this year better than last year?
One may ask: why make it better? The answer is that there is no worship
(ibadah) like fasting and rewards of Allah (swt) for this act of worship can be
limitless.
Abu Hurairah (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, “When
Ramadan begins, the gates of Jannah are opened, the gates of Hell are closed
and the devils are chained.”
This is a special distinction of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims
become more and more inclined towards the worship of Allah. They pay greater
attention to the recitation of the Quran, remembrance of Allah, worship and
seeking pardon for their sins.
There are many hadiths related to fasting; for instance, the Prophet (saw) said,
“You should fast, for there is nothing
like it.” (classed as saheeh by al-
Albaani in Saheeh al-Nasaa‟i)
The Messenger of Allah (saw) also
said, “Allah said: „Every deed of the
son of Adam is for him except
fasting; it is for Me and I shall reward
for it…‟”. Al-Qurtubi explained that
what this means is that the amount
of reward for good deeds may
become known to people, and they
will be rewarded between ten and
seven hundred fold, and as much as
Allah wants – except fasting, for Allah
will reward it without measure. This
is supported by a report narrated by
Muslim from Abu Hurayrah (ra) who
said, “The Messenger of Allah (saw)
said, „Every deed of the son of Adam
will be rewarded between ten and
seven hundred fold. Allah said,
“Except fasting, for it is for Me and I
shall reward for it‟” – i.e., I shall
reward it greatly, without specifying
how much. This is similar to the verse
in the Quran in which Allah says,
“Only those who are patient shall
receive their reward in full, without
reckoning” (Quran: al-Zumar 39:10).
Rocket Science July 2012 3
intention
closer to Allah
setting goals
From the above, it is obvious that the rewards for fasting are multiplied from
10 to 700 to potentially limitless, as He wills. So, let‟s think again – Ramadan
and fasting provide us with the opportunity for unlimited rewards. However, we
will be rewarded based on our actions and our intentions. The better we make
our worship, the more rewards we stand to gain. That‟s why we need to strive
more every year. This year, insha Allah, we have yet another opportunity to
make it better than the previous.
First, let‟s do some soul-searching in assessing our intentions. What is it that
excites us in welcoming this month? What are we are looking forward to? Is it
the socialising, the iftar festivities, and the change of schedules? Or is it about
our yearning for more rewards, the hope to seek forgiveness for our sins, and
hence the prospects for a better life here and in the hereafter? Our clarity of
intentions as we start this blessed month can make a big difference. Consider
this hadith by the Prophet (saw): “Actions are but by intention and each person
will have but that which he intended” (Bukhaari and Muslim).
Ibn al-Qayyim (ra) said, “The degree to which a person is helped and aided by
Allah depends on the degree of his intention, drive, aim and hopes. Help from
Allah comes to people in proportion to their drive, intention, hopes and fears,
and failure comes to them in like manner.”
Let‟s heed those reminders. Take some time to ensure that your intention is to
seek rewards and forgiveness for your sins, and you will observe a miraculous
transformation in the nature of your actions as they will automatically get
aligned to your intentions. If left uncalibrated through your sincere intentions,
your actions will focus on the festivities and other distractions instead of
getting closer to Allah, which should be your primary objective in this month.
And that can‟t happen unless you intend for it and take actions to realise those
intentions.
Also, once we align our intentions to
seek Allah‟s pleasure alone (remember
where Allah said that fasting is for Me
and I will reward for it), you will notice
that all your actions will be for Him. You
won‟t leave any room for the devil to get
in your heart to make you show off your
actions. A man asked Tameem ibn Aws
al-Daari (ra), “How do you pray at
night?” He got very angry and said, “By
Allah, one rakaah that I pray in secret in
the small hours of the night is more
beloved to me than praying the whole
night long and then telling people about it.”
Similarly, the Prophet (saw) warned, “Whoever does the deeds of the Hereafter
to gain some worldly benefit, will have no share of the Hereafter” (Ahmad
Saheeh al-Jaami‟).
Another step you can take to make this
Ramadan better is to make your worship more
goal-directed, as that will help you focus on
your acts of worship and will also force yourself
to achieve those goals. Let‟s ponder on what
our pious ancestors said about forcing ourselves
to do more in our acts of worship.
4 Rocket Science July 2012
worship, salat,
dua, dhikr
sadaqah, zakah
Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir said, “I struggled against my own self for forty
years until it became right.”
Thaabit al-Banaani said, “I struggled for twenty years to make myself pray
qiyaam al-layl, and I enjoyed it [qiyaam al-layl] for [the next] twenty
years.”
„Umar ibn „Abd al-„Azeez said, “The best of deeds are those which we force
ourselves to do.”
„Abd-Allah ibn al-Mubaarak said: “The souls of righteous people in the past
used to push them to do good deeds, but our souls do not do what we want
them to do except by force, so we have to force them.”
Qutaadah said: “O son of Adam, if you do not want to do any good except
when you have the energy for it, then your nature is more inclined towards
boredom and laziness. The true believer is the one who pushes himself.”
So, for this Ramadan, set some realistic goals for the amount of worship and
for the levels of your sincerity, and you will not only have something to strive
for but you will feel more satisfied after Ramadan is over if you achieved what
you set out for. And next year, you can raise the bar higher and set loftier
goals – another step towards achieving unlimited rewards.
In summary, let‟s pause for a few
moments to straighten our
intentions and ensure that they are
not diluted by the typical Ramadan
distractions such as socialising,
iftar parties, idle talk during late
hours, late night TV, fashion shows,
etc. Also, set some goals for this
month and get set to achieve them.
O Allah! For us, let this month of
Ramadan be a period of peace,
faith, safety and total submission to Your will; make us walk apace swiftly to
that which You like and approve. O Allah! Pour out plentiful blessings on us in
this month, make available for us its generous good and sustenance, and keep
us safe from the harm, evil misfortune and mischief that may try to trace us in
this month.

Sadaqah
This is the first half of a two-part article is based on the YMWA monthly study
circle. Insha Allah, it will be concluded in the next issue. For any queries
regarding our study circles please contact us on [email protected] or visit
us on www.ymwa.org for information on our events.
What is sadaqah?
Sadaqah means voluntary charity. In the earlier history of Islam, zakah was
usually discussed while using the word sadaqah. Even the zakah collector and
distributor was called a musaddiq. But in the later history of Islam, sadaqah
was traditionally used to mean only voluntary charitable acts.
Rocket Science July 2012 5
sadaqah, sidq
proof of faith
usury and charity
wealth
The root of the word sadaqah is sidq. Sidq is truthfulness in realising declared
belief by action. One affirms truthfulness through words, thoughts, and actions
on an individual and social level. It is the essence and sprit of action and the
true standard of straightforwardness in thought, distinguishing believers from
hypocrites, and the people of Paradise from the people of the Fire.
The meaning of sadaqah is derived from the root sidq because sadaqah implies
giving away goods and funds for the sake of Allah (swt) in expression of
faithfulness and in realisation of the belief in resurrection and the afterlife. It is
for that reason that the Quran associates giving charity with affirmation of
faith, and withholding with rejection of faith.
"So he who gives in charity and fears God and in all sincerity testifies to the
best, We will indeed make smooth for him the path to bliss, but the one who is
a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient and gives lies to the best We
will indeed make smooth for him the path to misery.” (92:5-10)
Sadaqah is a virtuous deed in Islam. In fact, it is considered a proof of one's
faith (iman). Abu Malik al-Ashari (ra) narrated that Allah‟s Messenger (saw)
said, “Cleanliness is half of faith. Alhamdulillah (“Praise be to Allah”) fills the
scale. SubhanAllah (“Glory be to Allah”) and Alhamdulillah (“Praise be to
Allah”) fill up what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is a light.
Charity is proof (of one‟s faith). Endurance is a brightness and the Quran is a
proof on your behalf or against you. All men go out early in the morning and
sell themselves, thereby setting themselves free or destroying themselves.”
(Muslim)
The more we give in sadaqah, the more we increase our iman and thus expect
Allah's rewards both in this world and in the life hereafter. Giving charity out of
our wealth does not decrease our wealth but instead Allah (swt) increases it, as
shown in the following ayats and hadith.
“Allah will deprive usury of all blessing, but will give increase for deeds of
charity: for He loves not creatures ungrateful and wicked.” (Quran 2: 276)
“That which you give in usury for increase through the property of (other)
people, will have no increase with Allah: but that which you give for charity,
seeking the countenance of Allah, (will increase); it is those who will get a
recompense multiplied.” (Quran 30:39)
Abu Hurairah (ra) reported Allah‟s Messenger (saw) as saying, “Charity does
not in any way decrease the wealth; and the servant who forgives, Allah adds
to his respect; and the one who shows humility,
Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the
people).” (Muslim)
Types of sadaqah
Sadaqah is not restricted to giving part of our
wealth or material possessions or any special deed
of righteousness. Islam considers all good deeds to
be sadaqah that increases our iman. Since sadaqah
is not limited to giving of money or part of our
wealth, every Muslim can earn rewards from Allah
(swt). Sadaqah is an easy way to increase our
iman. Every Muslim, whether poor or wealthy, can
give sadaqah at any time. The Prophet (saw) tells
us that dhikr (remembrance of Allah) is a form of
sadaqah, in the following hadiths.
Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that Abu Dharr (ra)

said to the Messenger of Allah (saw), “The wealthy people have all the
rewards: they pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, and they have surplus
wealth which they give in charity. But we have no wealth which we may give in
charity.” Allah‟s Messenger (saw) replied, “Abu Dharr, should I not teach you
phrases by which you acquire the rank of those who excel you? No one can
acquire your rank except one who acts like you.” Abu Dharr said, “Why not,
Allah‟s Messenger?” The Prophet (saw) explained, “Exalt Allah; say "Allahu
Akbar" (“Allah is Most Great”) after each prayer 33 times. And praise Him; say,
"Alhamdulillah" (“Praise be to Allah”) 33 times. And glorify Him; say, "Subhan
Allah" (“Glory be to Allah”) 33 times. And end it by saying, "La ilaha illallahu
wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yomeetu wa
huwa „ala kulli shai‟in qadeer." (“There is no god but Allah alone, He has no
partner, to Him belongs the Kingdom, to Him praise is due and He has power
over everything.”) Your sins will be forgiven, even if they are like the foam of
the sea.” (Abu Dawud)
Abu Dharr (ra) narrated that Allah‟s
Messenger (saw) said, “In the morning,
charity is due from every bone in the
body of every one of you. Every
utterance of Allah‟s glorification is an act
of charity. Every utterance of praise of
Him is an act of charity; every utterance
of profession of His Oneness is an act of
charity; every utterance of profession of
His greatness is an act of charity;
enjoining good is an act of charity;
forbidding what is disreputable is an act
of charity; and two rakaahs which one
prays in the forenoon will suffice.”
(Muslim)
For our own success, we should spend time, money and effort in giving
sadaqah for the pleasure of Allah as the rewards of sadaqah are nothing but
success, especially in the Hereafter. In the Quran, Allah (swt) makes this clear.
“Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret
and in public, have their reward with their Rabb (only God and Sustainer). On
them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.” (Quran 2:274)
“… that which you give for charity, seeking the countenance of Allah, (will
increase); it is those who will get a recompense multiplied.” (Quran 30:39)
“Only those who believe in Our signs, who when they are recited to them fall
down in adoration, and celebrate the praises of their Rabb (only God and
Sustainer), nor are they (ever) puffed up with pride. They forsake their beds of
sleep, the while they call on their Rabb (only God and Sustainer), in fear and
hope. And they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have
bestowed on them. Now no person knows what delights of the eye are kept
hidden (in reserve) for them – as a reward for their (good) deeds. Is then the
man who believes no better than the man who is rebellious and wicked? Not
equal are they. For those who believe and do righteous deeds are gardens as
hospitable homes, for their (good) deeds.” (Quran 32:15-19)
"For Muslim men and women, for believing men and women, for devout men
and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient
and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and
women who give in charity, for men and women who fast, for men and women
who guard their chastity, and for men and women who engage much in Allah‟s

remembrance – for them has Allah prepared forgiveness and great reward."
(Quran 33:35)
There are also many hadiths in which the prophet (saw) explains the
importance and value of sadaqah.
Mu'aadh bin Jabal (ra) related that the Prophet (saw) said, “Sadaqah
extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.” (Ahmad, Tirmidhi)
The Prophet (saw) also said: “The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection
will be his sadaqah.” (Ahmad)

YMWA team runners-up in netball competition
The netball competition held on 16 June at Papatoetoe High School was a
success for the YMWA team, winning the runner-up trophy. Wearing matching
black and white uniforms, the YMWA team played in the youth category. All the
games, of 20 minutes‟ duration, were played in the indoor court.
In total, the YMWA team played against three teams, with a draw and two
wins, putting us through to the final. In the final, the pressure was on against
the skilful Mangere team. The final was the most challenging of all the games
on the day, but it was a fair game, and the team showed great teamwork and
sportsmanship. However, the score in the final was 10-3 to the powerful
Mangere team, who won the youth category. Possession was everything, and
unforced errors led to the need for stout defending.
Basma Hassan, Leila Zaza and Rawand Shiblaq were
the YMWA scorers in the final, with each player
showing great skill and shooting accuracy, backed by
an outstanding effort from the rest of the team.
In the end, having fun was the highlight of the entire
tournament, as all the girls enjoyed themselves and
were pleased to be part of a well organised event.
This was the first entry to the netball tournament for
the YMWA team, and we are certainly looking
forward to playing as a closer team in the next
tournament coming up in September.
The YMWA team members included Ohoud Eraki
(Manager), Mariam Arif (Coach), Basma Hassan
(Team Captain), Alac Alkhateeb, Miriam Math, Leila
Zaza and Rawand Shiblaq.

Fund-raising for the YMWA camp
Barbecues, face painting, bake stalls, and
even a visit from Shortland Steet star
Estevez Gillespie (who plays Bailey Finch
on the show), are just some of the many
things YMWA volunteers have been up to
in the past month, raising every dollar
possible to reach a target of $15,000 to
deliver a bigger and better summer camp
for our Muslimah youth.
Nearly a dozen YMWA volunteers helped
out on Saturday 26 May during Youth
Week. From young to old, faces were
painted nonstop with a spectrum of
colours. Corban Estate in Henderson was
the venue for the first full-day fundraiser,
helping to raise $300 towards the camp.
Parents and friends of volunteers added
behind-the-scenes support by helping to
bake, and providing support on the day.
The smell of onion wafted through the air
as University of Auckland students enjoyed their first fundraiser BBQ, dubbed
the “I heart BBQ Fundraiser”, in the last week of semester. After a day of
cooking up sausages, selling drinks, cupcakes, chocolate squares, baklawa and
chocolate brownies, the team raised a total of $513 towards the camp.
Each year the YMWA Muslim camp strives
to be unique: to offer young Muslim
women between the ages of 12-25
activities and learning opportunities that
encourage personal growth in a supportive
environment. Last year, it brought 20
different nationalities together in a bond of
sisterhood, friendship and teambuilding.
This year the YMWA camp has the
overarching aim of enhancing the girls‟
confidence and personal development in
areas of culture, leadership and faith. It
will provide opportunities for cultural
enrichment, exchange and learning. As in past years, the camp will use team-
building activities and interactive workshops to build leadership skills and
enable self-growth, all enhanced through religious
education, spiritual workshops and reflections.
To raise funds, we are also selling the Auckland

Building strong foundations
The strength of a dollar a day
A mighty wave hit the village wiping out the houses made of clay and stone,
flooding the streets and washing away fathers who had gone fishing in the sea
– a force that had never been felt before, knocking the village backwards,
tearing off roofs and walls, crashing on top of children, women and all that was
in its way, drowning many, and leaving a pile of debris behind. These are the
childhood recollections left like scars in the minds of the founding orphans of
the International Centre For Children Charitable Trust (ICCCT), memories that
left them orphaned for life.
Fathima was just two years old
when she joined ICCCT as one of the
first seven orphans sponsored after
being rescued from the tsunami,
having lost her mother, father and
many other members of her family.
As a survivor, she was placed with a
relative to be taken care of but,
coming from a poor village, the
relatives could not support her
either, until ICCCT stepped in.
ICCCT, a Muslim orphanage, was
established to help those affected by
ethnic conflict and the Asian Boxing
Day tsunami in December 2004
which saw almost 50% of total

deaths being Muslims even though they constitute only 7.1% of the population
in Sri Lanka. As a result, 253 children were left as orphans, most of whom
were very poor, and some of whom were newborn infants abandoned in
hospitals.
Fathima now has shelter, food, clothing, education and health care, all thanks
to the support of a generous Kiwi sponsor contributing to her growth by the
grace of Almighty Allah. Now at age 8, she is a high performer in her school,
prays regularly with her family, and has good character according to her most
recent report. She has also completed recitation of the 30th juz of the Quran. A
regular update of her position is sent to her sponsor, who is given all her
details including the foster parents and details of where she lives. The reports
are compiled by volunteers in Sri Lanka who visit Fathima on a regular basis
and ensure that the funds are used for the sole purpose of making Fathima
self-sustainable.
Her sponsor also sends gifts for Eid which fill Fathima with love and joy.
Fathima‟s sponsor has been with her over the past seven years seeing her
grow each year with an annual photo provided along with a report of her
progress.
With the vision of “establishing orphanages worldwide and supporting orphans
with tender loving care, to empower
them to become self-sustainable”,
ICCCT has come a long way from the
first seven orphans sponsored in the
aftermath of the 2004 Asian tsunami.
Through the sponsorship programme
and the generosity of people like
Fathima‟s sponsor, there are now
over 300 orphans registered with
ICCCT in Sri Lanka, who are
receiving assistance by way of
qurbani meat, zakatul fitr, and a teak tree valued at US$1,000 per orphan.
ICCCT strives to provide many orphans like Fathima with an environment for
them to grow physically, mentally and spiritually by providing the necessities of
life to orphans.
Through the sponsorship program ICCCT aims to enable Muslims to be with the
Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (saw) in Jannah, by providing loving care for
orphans. Sahl bin Sa'd narrated, “The Prophet (saw) said, „I and the person
who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this,‟
putting his index and middle fingers together.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Book 73,
Hadith 34)
From the efforts of local and international donors, ICCCT has successfully
secured the purchase of 12 acres of land on which have been built an
agricultural well and an administration office named Bayt Al-Hasanat.
“And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age.
Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them.
And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will
grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should
refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor - let him take according to
what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring
witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allah as Accountant ...” (Qur‟an 4:6).

Fathima and help build a strong foundation, then contact ICCCT today on

and those people who help generally from the brothers and sisters who hang
out at the masjid, through to the imams and masjid administration. They hope
to use this network to develop programmes and resources which will benefit
new Muslims and the community at large:
Quarterly newsletter providing news relevant to new Muslims and convert

Green Islam
Caring for the environment is an Islamic virtue, and with this in mind local
Muslims have adopted a stretch of riverside near Auckland Zoo. Members of
the Rasheed Memorial Dawah Trust (RMDT) and their friends are involved in
the Meola Creek Restoration Project overseen by the Wai Care voluntary
organisation and involving other volunteer groups with the support of Nikki

with natives. Already 1,200 grasses and trees have been planted, transforming
the stream bank. A delightful gushing spring, lost for 20 years, was
rediscovered once the weeds were cleared. Ultimately Auckland Council will
carry out landscaping and put in riverside paths, creating an amenity where
one did not exist.

Why attend Rocket Park jumuah?
Central location
Plenty of free parking
Facilities for ladies
Bayaan (religious talk) before jumuah prayers
All bayaan and khutbah in English
NB We are only open for Friday prayers – not for the five daily prayers.
In December 2010, the Senior Citizens’ Association building, Rocket Park, New North Road,
Mount Albert, was closed for renovation by the Auckland City Council. Following these
renovations, we believe we are the only jumuah in New Zealand with air-conditioning and heating.
