Photo by Shawn Monaghan May 6 Spring Dust Off at Haskins A Success with over 75 Cars Photos by Pete Agris Weather almost always spells the success of classic car events & the GMO 2007 Spring Dust- Off is no different. The officers of the club had been watching the weather forecasts like hawks – first bad weather then about a week before the show the forecast changed and weather looked great – Oh happy day!! After the show preparation meeting at Berejik, I was relaxing & preparing to go cruising to Gold’s Gym in Millis, when my ear caught the weather forecaster say “chance of drizzle…” - say it isn’t so!! I flew to my computer & checked out the forecasts and all of them had changed – just like that. Fortunately only one of them called for drizzle (and that proved wrong) but they all said cloudy, cool and windy until afternoon. Fortunately, Oldsmobilers are mostly a hardy bunch and we met on schedule at Haskins at 7:00 AM to get everything ready. I think the weather kept some people away. But we had over 75 cars in attendance – a nice comfortable number for the Haskin’s lot. We could have fit a few more in, but it would have started to get crowded. As it was, we saw a lot of camaraderie between the attendees and most everyone enjoyed the show. All attention was focused on Washington Street when Sam Murray drove his 1967 Brainbeau Olds Tribute Drag Car into the lot (the sound was unmistakable) and up the ramp under the Oldsmobile sign. Loyed Woodland was present with his display of the Brainbeau & Berejik race cars and he updated us as to the progress on the restoration of his original ’66 442 race car. Several other former Brainbeau & Berejik employees were present including the show MC, George Berejik, and Russ Geer.

Weather almost always spells the success of classic car events & the GMO 2007 Spring Dust-Off is no different.

  • Cathy Economou greeted the cars as they came in and collected the registration fees while Karen Santucci and Claire Loranz assisted Cathy and helped me at the registration table while Jim Maffeo was in charge of name tags. Rich Santucci and his band of judges (Chuck Schiel, Dave Consoli, Dave Blackman, Pete Agris and several others) directed the cars for parking and then spent several hours evaluating the entries. Andrea DesJardins headed up the 50/50 sales and Al Vee provided the music. By 1:00 PM the results were tallied. Billie served breakfast and lunch to all who were hungry (the hamburgers were delicious) and about 2:00 PM everyone was summoned by George Berejik for the awards.

George conducted an auction for the goods donated by Meguiars products, Steve & Cathy Economou, and Ted Loranz. Bidding was fierce for several rare (yah-right) plastic models which sold for several times their face value. Bidders also fought over the stuffed animals, an umbrella, Red Sox programs, and polishes with all the proceeds going to enrich the coffers of your GMO. The 50/50 was drawn with the winner receiving over $150 in cash.

To complete the revelry, George Berejik awarded the trophies (see winners list at the end of this newsletter). Rich and Karen Santucci were awarded the Doug Stavros Cup for 2007. Frank St Elmo was the recipient of the SuperWheels pick for his immaculate 1969 442, Mark Baravella won “best of show” with his 1964 Starfire and Steve & Cathy Economou’s 1967 442 coupe was the Dealer’s Choice.

As everyone was preparing to leave, President Paul Iantosca announced that we would be having an impromptu cruise leaving at 2:30 sharp. The cruise route was west through Wellesley square to Natick, then north on Rte 27 to Rte 9 East and back to Kingsbury St in Wellesley and Haskins. About a dozen cars took part in the cruise and a member of Wellesley’s finest was on hand to help with traffic and escort Sam Murray’s car back to his trailer.

A Dust-Off Email Exchange Hi Paul, I wanted to thank you for the awesome time at your spring dust off. I could not believe the nice cars and the organization of the show, met some nice folks, and thanks for the trophy. I know I was the only modified car in that class, but, like you said, it’s the thought that counts, this is my

  • first trophy ever for this car. I’ve owned it for 25 years and it feels awesome for all hours and work I’ve done. Never mind my wife saying “are you done yet?” - I will never be done w/my 442. Again thanks – see you at Endicott.

    Mike Gamache

I am so happy that we made your day. You made our day as well. Yes, you are correct, we do have our act together and we do great shows. But please keep in mind that we do it because we have a lot of fun doing it and enjoy watching people like you have a great time. What good is a show if no one comes? Everyone and every car is very important to us, all attendees are equal and our goal is to promote saving, restoring and enjoying Oldsmobile's like yours. I would like to thank you for taking the time to compose this thankful letter and I would like to forward it to my fellow officers and members with your permission. Always listening, Paul Iantosca, President - GMO Oldsmobile Club July Nationals in Bowling Green, KY

Everything is ready for the GMO representatives to attend the July Nationals. Steve Economou reports that the Intercity Van Lines truck is filled to capacity with and will make two pickups en route to get the 5 GMO cars, Loyed Woodland’s display and the display for the GMO booth at the swap meet. The GMO has taken a full page color ad in the show magazine and will have a booth to promote our club at the swap meet. Loyed Woodland’s will also have a booth to support the effort to restore his 1966 442 Brainbeau Olds race car.

If you haven’t done it already, you should plan to attend this national Oldsmobile event which will have about 400 show cars on display, many parts vendors, and typically a display of vintage cars direct from the official Oldsmobile collection will be there. Plan to come, make it a vacation, and visit the Corvette Museum and assembly plant in Bowling Green, KY.

    Ted Loranz, Treasurer

Message from Your President OK, Oldsmobile fans – we acted. We invited the National O.C.A. President, Mr. Pat Yancy and his wonderful wife Margaret, to our “Dust Off” on May 6th – unfortunately, he had a prior commitment and couldn’t make it. We also hoped that our brothers from CT would be coming up to

  • visit as “in force” as well this year. It would have been great to see them again. The NEOC Club is bidding for the 2010 Nationals and we will support and assist them in this wonderful and exciting endeavor. It is important that we all lend a hand to our Oldsmobile friends. They have chosen the Sturbridge Host Hotel as a venue for the 2010 Nationals and plan to make their presentation to the OCA this summer.

Plans were laid with new banners in hand, thanks to Jim Maffeo, and the 2007 Dust-Off was ready to go. We hoped for approximately 100 cars this year, a record breaker for Haskins Auto Sales of Wellesley. The club is finally in firm financial condition, and membership is steadily growing at about 5% per year; this all points to a healthy club. We had a wonderful turnout at our Sunday April 22nd meeting. We had 2 new members attend, as well as 2 old members who had lost touch.

As always, we had loads of fun. Hearing George Berejik award trophies is like hearing Moses on

the mountain – music to our ears. We did another auction, and Andrea DesJardins headed up the sale of the 50/50 drawing tickets. Music and requests from the 60s & 70s was played by our DJ Al Vee and Oldsmobile owners from 4 states attended this year. George Mattar, editor of Hemmings Muscle Magazine was also invited this year. ‘Come on down’ George, (from Vermont, that is). We also had hoped that the “Burn out King” himself would attend with his “time eating machine” that Bunjie built. My best always, Paul J. Iantosca, President
