INTELLIGENCES How Gaming Helps Young Minds Grow

Problem Solving

Teachers have used gaming in their

classrooms for many years to teach concepts in

the curriculum. Students work harder to learn

concepts when they are at play, so what

appears to be play can be a powerful Infinite

learning experience!

Getting in Shape

Games that involve physical activity include

things such as sports, dance, martial arts, etc.

Research shows that these types of games can

improve players’ stress levels, weight

management, health and fitness.

Games help you think

faster!

Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligences

Howard Gardener believes that people have multiple intelligences. Two of the most commonly used intelligences taught in school are verbal-linguistic and mathematical intelligences.

Often, students learn differently from one another and need to develop their particular intelligences.

Visual/spatial problem solving is visualizing an object in space and from different angles. Students strong in this intelligence will be strong in art as a medium for communication.

Bodily-kinesthetic thinkers have a keen sense of body awareness, movement, and making things. They enjoy physical hands-on learning.

Musical students show sensitivity to rhythm and sound.

Interpersonal students love interacting with others. They can be taught through group activities, video chats, conferences, e-mail, etc.

GAMES ROCK!

What’s your favorite board game?

ActivitiesBrainstorming

Start a class discussion on how games

impact their lives. How can they become

independent thinkers?

Activity: Review a classroom game.

GAME OBJECT OF GAME

WHAT DID YOU LIKE?

WHAT DID NOT WORK?

Identify Your Challenge

Think about how you can use games in the

classroom to learn vital curriculum concepts.

How can you create a game that would be fun

and educational at the same time?

Design A Game

Step 1: Decide on the curriculum topic and

develop a theme for the game. Actually having

played games in the classroom will help them

gather ideas. Once they have an idea, move to

Step 2.

Step 2: Work with the idea to come up with

the game objectives. What do you want to

teach? Develop the rules, flow, and how you

“win.”

Step 3: Decide on the best way to

storyboard it so your final game film will be under

a minute.

Refine

This is where you test out substitute

elements, combine ideas, adapt, find other

subject areas that this could be used in, eliminate

bad ideas for the purposes of refining your own

final game.

Share

Just when your students are getting

overwhelmed, you can inspire them by

connecting them with the world team! Using the

Rock Our World Wiki, share your ideas with the

other classrooms around the world!

Name Your Game

Create a Video of Your Game: This video will

premiere on International Family Night! Review

games with other schools. Talk about it with

them. What was great? What was challenging?

Let’s Rock! Making Music with GarageBand

This part of the project takes some organization on the part of the teachers involved! There will be 18 classes involved with this project. Each week you will need to submit one track done in GarageBand to the ROW iDisk. Every song will be limited to 30 seconds (or 15 measures) in length. Please try to stay within this time boundary so that all the pieces of the song can work together. Every Friday, beginning September 25th, you will have something due to send to another class. It will be very important that this is done on time, as many other classes around the world are counting on you.

Here’s the schedule for our GarageBand tracks...

On Friday... . This instrument track is due...

March 18, 2011 Drums

March 25, 2011 Bass Guitar

April 1, 2011 Synthesizer

April 8, 2011 Percussion

April 15, 2011 Strings

April 22, 2011 Easter- No Instrument Due

April 29, 2011 Creative Choice

May 6, 2011 Vocals

The first week you’ll open a new GarageBand project and create a 15 measure drum track. When you are finished, save the file using the name found on the chart for your class (located on the next few pages). Then, upload your file to the ROW iDisk into the appropriate Group folder. To get to the iDisk, from the Finder (desktop) on your Mac, click on Go and choose iDisk. From there choose “Other user’s public folder”. In the window that opens, type in rockourworld. In the next window, leave public in the first text box and type in the password, rockon. This will connect you to our ROW folder. Please drag your finished GB tracks into the folder marked for your class. From now on, each week you’ll save the file you work on into the folder of the class that started that file. Just follow the chart for your class found on the next few pages. It seems confusing at first, but you’ll get the idea after a week or so.
