ROCK GROUPS• Igneous

• Formed from a melt (molten rock)• Plutonic (intrusive):slow cooling and crystallization• Volcanic (extrusion): quick cooling at the surface

• Sedimentary

• Formed at the Earth’s surface• Clastic (Mineral Fragments or grains, clays)• Chemical (crystalline chemical/biochemical precipitates)

• Metamorphic

• Changed by pressure, temperature and fluids.

THE ROCK CYCLE

Page 4: Rock Cycle - Jewel

What is the rock cycle• To show how rocks slowly change

through time, scientists have created a model called the rock cycle.

• It illustrates the processes that create and change rocks.

What is a rock?• A rock is a mixture of such minerals, rock

fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other natural materials.

• Most rock used for building stone contains one or more common minerals, called rock-forming minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, mica, or calcite

• When you look closely, the sparkles you see are individual crystals of minerals.

IGNEOUS INTRUSIVE ROCK

INTRUSION IS LIQUID ROCK THAT FORMS UNDER THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH.

IGNEOUS EXTRUSIVE ROCKS

Extrusive rocks have been erupted onto the surface of the Earth
