CLE’s Temporary Art Exhibition Program is a free initiative available to artists. The purpose of this program is to showcase the diversity of arts and culture of the Cleveland Plus Region. Cultural institutions, arts organizations, museums, as well as individual artists, are afforded opportunities to exhibit their collections of original artwork and photography in the airport. Submissions are reviewed by an Art Review Panel. Each approved proposal is assigned an exhibit start date based on the exhibition calendar. The duration of exhibits is up to six months depending on the nature of the exhibit. Curatorial and installation support are provided to selected exhibitors. Artists are featured at the art site as well as on the airport’s website at www.clevelandairport.com.

Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure that CLE features an exhibit from one of Cleveland’s iconic museums - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum exists to collect, preserve and interpret the impact rock has made on our world.

This exhibit features work by photographer, Janet Macoska. For nearly four decades, Ms. Macoska has been capturing some of rock and roll’s most notable performers in her photos. The exhibit, en tled “Live from Cleveland, Ohio,” showcases some of her favorite images of rock’s greatest moments in Cleveland - including those of many Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees.

Arts, culture and diversity make Cleveland a great city. With an average of 30,000 passengers per day, CLE enhances its travelers’ experience by providing them with a glimpse of the ar s c richness and cultural diversity found in Cleveland and the region.

CLE is proud to partner with The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in our collabora ve eff ort to showcase the diversity of arts and culture in the Cleveland Plus Region. We would like to thank The Rock Hall and Janet Macoska for sharing this exhibit.

Sincerely,

Frank G. Jackson, Ricky D. Smith, Mayor Director of Port Control

“Live from Cleveland, Ohio”

Featuring rock photographer Janet Macoska

Rock and roll is part of Cleveland’s iden ty. In the early 1950’s, disc jockey Alan Freed and record shop owner Leo Mintz mainstreamed the term “rock and roll” to describe the sound

and energy of this music. The fi rst rock and roll concert, “The Moondog Corona on Ball” was held here in 1952. Throughout the years, Cleveland has con nued to be a music hub.

Along Lake Erie, stands The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Every year, nearly a half-million visitors experience this preeminent Museum dedicated to the preserva on, celebra on and explora on of rock and roll.

This exhibit captures the rock scene in Cleveland of the 70s and 80s, through to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame events of today.

Janet MacoskaC leveland na ve Janet Macoska grew up with a love for rock and roll and

photography. As early as age 12, she combined both, photographing rock duo Sonny and Cher at local radio sta on WKYC. That photo

became her fi rst published photo in a 1967 issue of TEEN SCREEN magazine.

If rock and roll has been the soundtrack of your life, photojournalist Janet Macoska has provided many of the visuals. Janet Macoska has been capturing rock’s greatest on fi lm…and now in pixels (digital). Among the publica ons who have used her photos are Rolling Stone, People, US, Vogue, American Photo, Creem, 16, Teen Beat, MOJO, NY Times ,and London Times. VH1, Bravo and A&E regularly uses Macoska’s vast rock archive in their “rockumentaries.” Her work is in the permanent collec on of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, The Smithsonian Museum of American History, The Na onal Portrait Gallery in London and in Hard Rock Café restaurants, hotels and casinos all around the planet. David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Devo, Heart, AC/DC, and The Kinks are just some of the ar sts who have used her work on their cds.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum presented a retrospec ve exhibi on of her photography in 2003 and 2004 en tled “It’s Only Rock and Roll.” That exhibi on has since toured to The Women’s Museum in Dallas (2009), The Canadian Exposi on in Toronto (2010), The Cornell Museum of Fine Arts in Orlando (2011), South Shore Arts in Indiana (2012) and The Longwood Center for Visual Arts in Virginia (2013).

Presently, Macoska is primary photographer for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Playhouse Square Center, The Cleveland Interna onal Film Fes val, and also shoots freelance for corporate and music clients. She o en lectures at museums and universi es about her career as a photographer in the music industry. www.janetmacoska.com All photos in this exhibition are by Janet Macoska.
