Some History of the Rock Genre
It is a form of popular music that evolved in the 1950's from Rhythm and Blues.
Rock music incorporates a variety of musical styles; especially rhythm and blues, country music, and gospel.
Country and Blues was morphed into a new sound aided by electric guitars and a steady drum beat, to create rock music.
Some History of the Rock Genre
Rock music can generally be described as hard-edged music, performed with electric guitars, bass guitars, and drums and is usually accompanied by lyrics sung by a vocalist.
It is considered to have a strong rhythm with an accent on the offbeat, and youth-oriented lyrics.
Over the years many different styles of rock music have evolved.
Important Events That Shaped Rock and Roll
“The British Invasion”- The Beatles came to America
Buddy Holly and others died in a plane crash, Don Mclean’s “American Pie” was written.
Woodstock Deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis
Joplin, and Elvis due to drug abuse.
Different Rock Genres There are long lists of different
rock genres but here are some that are more popular.oSoft RockoClassic RockoPunk RockoAlternative Rock
Soft Rock Also known as mellow rock, light rock, or easy
rock. Uses the technique of rock and roll to compose a
softer more toned-down sound for listening. This genre tends to use acoustic guitars, pianos,
synthesizers and sometimes saxophones. Soft rock was derived from folk rock using
acoustic instruments and putting more emphasis on melody and harmonies.
During the 1960’s soft rock started to get divided from hard rock.

Classic Rock Classic rock relies heavily on the 60’s, 70’s,
and 80’s. Classic rock music is typically most popular
among people who were young when the music first came out.
It is not a particular musical style or lyric theme.
Classic- something about which the same opinion has stood over a long period of time. People listen to it and feel they did when it was first recorded.

How Punk Rock Started The beginnings of punk rock are often furiously debated. This is
partially because everyone has different definition of punk rock, and partially because its foundation stones are found in several places. "Punk Rock" was originally used to describe the garage musicians of the '60's. Bands like the Sonics were starting up and playing out with no musical or vocal instruction, and often limited skill. Because they didn't know the rules of music, they were able to break the rules. They were raw, crude and often political.
The Velvet Underground is the next piece in the puzzle. The Velvet Underground, managed by Andy Warhol, produced music that often bordered on noise.
The final primary influence is found in the foundations of Glam Rock. Artists like David Bowie were dressing outrageously, living extravagantly and producing loud trashy rock and roll. Glam would end up splitting up its influence, doling out portions to hard rock, "hair metal" and punk rock.

Ways of using punk rock in the classroom: I would use it to excite the students for
exercise related activity. I would teach the students how punk rock
was used as a part of rebellious activity and also as a way of sending messages.
I would have the students analyze the lyrics from certain punk rock songs and see if they could create their own songs.
I would look for historical references in songs and relate them to the students history lessons.
Alternative Rock Alternative rock is a name given to any
piece of rock that does not fit any other genre in rock.
Technically it derived from punk rock. Alternative rock came about during the
80’s but became huge in the 90’s because of grunge.
