Dear Fellow Members:

Well, George Culp’s “Unpaid Hand”had nothing on the almost 40 pairsof hands that showed up on May 13to labor outside under thedirections of Vince Campbell andBob “Chef” Lasser and pick up bagafter bag of trash and river debris. While this was taking place, weedsof all sorts were being removed tomake room for grass seed and

flowers planted by Joan Preish’s flower group a few dayslater. The Clubhouse and grounds are really looking nice, and hopefully, will continue to do so. Doesn’t the newwhite picket fence add a touch of class as you enter andexit the property?

But there’s one unsightly condition that’s still with us,that all the receptacles in the world can’t seem toalleviate. Butts! Cigarette butts!! Everywhere, in theparking lots, in the grass, and even right next to the“butt stop” receptacles!!! Now fewer and fewer peoplesmoke, so it behooves those of us who do to insure thatwe dispose of the butts properly. If more receptacles willsolve the problem, then we’ll purchase more and placethem in strategic locations around the Club. But, it’s theresponsibility of the smoker to insure properdisposal…and flower pots don’t count!

I’d like to put in a plug for vessel safety. The boatingseason is upon us and those of us with boats should makesure they are “up to snuff.” Dick Wambach (586-4813),John Braund (865-2183) of the USCG Auxiliary, and TomKingston (482-1096)of the USPS have all indicated theirwillingness to perform a vessel safety inspection so thatwe are aware of possible deficiencies and can thus correctthem.

Two of the three major events have taken place thismonth of May and were well received. Over 240 broughttheir families to theMother’s Day brunch and theCommodores’ Ball was a full house, complete with 10Commodores in attendance! And so many complimentswere bestowed upon our Club Manager Mary Smith andher staff, as well as the culinary results from the kitchenunder the guidance of Executive Chef GeorgeGremminger as well as the lovely decorations thanks toLisa Dorsey’s Entertainment Committee. If MotherNature smiles on us, everything should go well onMemorial Day!

Finally, two items. One, make sure you read the minutesof the May 18 RYC Board Meeting. There are manyactivities and events of which you should be aware. Andtwo – how many of you know what a MARTIN 16 is?(Hint – it’s not a guitar!) Watch for it in June.

See you at our Club!Fred Karshick, Commodore

Did you know that the Optimist is the largest one-designclass of sailboats in the world? Kids as young as 6through age 15 race Optimists in a variety of local,

regional, national and even international events. RYCOptimist parents have been meeting since January to puttogether a fun program of events with something for ournewest and youngest sailors to our veteran Optimist racersand everyone in between.

This summer RYC's most experienced Optimist sailors will betraining and traveling to several events at the Buffalo CanoeClub-(Canadian shore of Lake Erie), RI, CT, CORK in Kingston,ONT as well as racing in the Junior Olympics and NY StateChamps at RYC. This is a great opportunity for our youngestsailors to improve their sailing skills, travel to regattas andmeet new friends! Look for the RYC Racing Team schedule oftraining and events for more information.

RYC's Liz Bower will be back in Rochester this summer and islooking forward to coaching the team. Liz is a two time AllAmerican sailing for Old Dominion University and was part ofthe Women's National Champion team in 2002. Liz ran theHampton YC summer junior sailing program last summer andcoached several high school teams this past season.

RYC hopes to field a team to compete in the Optimist TeamRace Nationals in Rhode Island in July. Liz has had a lot ofteam racing experiencing. Team racing is tremendous fun forkids since it de-emphasizes individual performance andpromotes kids helping their team mates.

Liz will also play a big role in encouraging our youngest andless experienced “Green Fleet” sailors. Kids can participate inGreen Fleet once they have the basic skills: tacking, jibing andsailing upwind. Green Fleeters race on a separate race courseand parents and instructors may assist during racing. Racesare shorter and close to shore. Emphasis is on lots of fun, swimming breaks, snacks etc.

RYC will be hosting two Optimist regattas this summer: the JrOlympics, August 12-14 (a clinic Fri. and racing Sat/Sun) andthe NY State Championships the weekend right after schoolstarts in September. There will be separate Green Fleets atboth these regattas.

This summer the RYC Optimist Fleet will host three MondayFun Nights. There will be low key sailing in the river for theyoungest sailors and a race course for more experienced kids.Parent run, this is a family evening followed with a cookoutand fun awards. Watch for the July LOG for more specificinformation about fleet activities that are being planned.

For more information about the Optimist Racing Teamcontact Cory Sertl at [email protected]. To help withcoordinating the Family Fun Monday nights and for furtherinformation please contact Jane Mastrandrea [email protected].

Now is the time to sign your child up for sailing. Furtherinformation is on the RYC website.

Members’Children

Dear Current and FutureSwim Team Members and Swim Team Parents,

As you all know, summeris fast approaching andwe are looking forward to another great season forthe RYC Sea Dragons! There will be a slight change inthe practice schedule this year; practices will be heldfrom 12:30 - 1:00 pm Monday through Friday ratherthan from 12:00 - 12:30 pm as we did last year.

Hopefully this will give the swimmers who alsoparticipate in the half-day Junior Sailing camp sometime to transition and relax before coming over forpractice.

The goal of swim team is for kids to have fun andparticipate in a very low key competitive sport.Children do not need to be excellent swimmers; theyshould enjoy swimming and look forward to practice.

We understand summer is a busy time and we realize itwould be unrealistic to require children attend practiceevery day. We would like to ask that children attendat least 2 or 3 swim practices before each swim meetthey will be participating in.

Practices will start on Monday, June 26, and we will goover the swim meet schedule for the summer at thatfirst practice. If you would like more information aboutthe swim team please come to the June 26th practicesince we will be starting with an informationalmeeting. There is no need to sign up and there is nofee, just show up Monday ready to swim. We hope tosee you all there! – RYC Swim Team Coaches
