2011–2012 ANNUAL REPORT
b e y o n d m e a s u r e .
ROCHESTER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Dear Friends:
In the fall of 2011, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra entered its 89th season in a hope-filled state of mind. With a newly approved strategic plan that mapped out a four-year path toward artistic growth and financial sustainability, we had reason to be optimistic about our future. Anticipation was building throughout our community for the beginning of a bold, new artistic era with the arrival of Arild Remmereit as music director. And we were uplifted, both fiscally and psychologically, by two consecutive balanced budgets, momentum and opportunity in our fundraising efforts, and record subscription sales the previous year.
Buoyed by this spirit of confidence and optimism, we made an important decision: after two years of wage and benefit sacrifices from our musicians and staff, 2011–2012 was the year to reinvest in our workforce. We also agreed it was important to invest in the artistic initiatives of our new music director in his inaugural season, and in the marketing and promotion of his programs. Our operating expenses grew accordingly, from $9.2 million in 2010–2011 to $9.9 million in 2011–2012.
We knew these decisions added risk to the budget and increased pressure on our revenue-generating departments to exceed their strong performance the previous year. Unfortunately, we under-performed in both ticket sales and fundraising last season. Total ticket sales were down about 2% ($3.44 million vs. $3.52 million the previous year), with subscription and summer season shortfalls offsetting a slight rise in single-ticket sales. Development income was down just over 3% ($4.02 million vs. $4.16 million). Increases in Endowment support and fees generated by regional concert activity helped bolster revenues, but total operating revenues declined about 1% during the fiscal year ($9.16 million vs. $9.26 million).
From the Board Chair and President & CEO
2 3
The result: our planned expense increases combined with revenue declines to produce an operating deficit of $746,000. We fully recognize that losses like this are not sustainable, and addressing this head-on is the top organizational priority for 2012–2013.
While the RPO Annual Meeting is a time to shine a spotlight on our audited financial results from the prior fiscal year, it is also a time to reflect on the orchestra’s artistic progress, to remind ourselves of our commitment to education and community service, to reflect on the progress we’ve made against our strategic goals, and to express our gratitude to our ticket-buyers, subscribers, donors, and sponsors who make the music possible.
We are proud of the RPO’s many accomplishments of 2011–2012, which are detailed on the following pages. Of particular note are the RPO’s recent advancements in several areas central to our strategic plan: the expansion of our served market to Ithaca and other communities within a two-hour radius of Rochester; our “RPO Everywhere” initiative, where the RPO is a ubiquitous presence at signature community events year-round; and our ever-deepening relationship with the Eastman School of Music, with more and more opportunities for collaboration between the RPO and the school’s students and faculty.
In spite of our underlying financial challenges, whenever our musicians take the stage, the house lights dim, and the music begins, we are reminded of the vital role the RPO plays in bringing joy and beauty, solace and spirited entertainment, into the lives of thousands of concertgoers in the Rochester region every year. Thanks to your support, nearly 180,000 people experienced the RPO live in concert last season - including more than 14,000 young people who experienced our Education concerts. Thanks to you, the RPO found countless new ways to fulfill its core purpose: To inspire, educate, and engage our community through the art of music.
We are deeply grateful for your steadfast support of your Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Education and community engagement have been at the core of the RPO’s mission since its founding in 1922. George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak Company and the world-renowned Eastman School of Music, believed that all Rochester residents could experience musical learning throughout their lives, from pre-school through college and beyond.
This dedication to life-long learning continues today. In 2000, the orchestra named Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach—the first position of its kind in the country. Each season, the RPO presents nearly 50 education and community engagement concerts that serve a diverse population. These programs are comprehensive in their content and most are offered free of charge to the participants.
In the 2011–2012 season, RPO musicians performed educational concerts for more than 14,000 Rochester-areaschoolchildren. Thousands more children and adults from throughout the region attended RPO performances during the year, including the orKIDStra series of family concerts; Around the Town; summer concerts at Ontario Beach, Frontier Field, and in Downtown Rochester; holiday runouts; and more.In addition, nearly a million people listened to RPO concerts through radio broadcasts on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM.
Here are some of the highlights of the 2011–2012 season:
orKIDStra: These Sunday afternoon RPO concerts are designed to delight kids and their families. This season, Michael Butterman introduced youngsters to some beloved storybook characters, including the Runaway Bunny, Tubby the Tuba, and Dr. Seuss’s Sneetches, the latter newly set to music by Spanish composer Lorenzo Palomo.
Tiny Tots Concerts: These 40-minute concerts for preschoolers and kindergarteners are presented at schools, houses of worship, and other public venues, The program High, Low, Fast, Slow: Musical Opposites in March 2012 introduced children to the instrumental families of the orchestra, as well as some basic musical concepts.
Primary Concerts: This series provides live orchestra performances at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre for first- through third-grade students in the Rochester City School District and surrounding areas. In March 2012, students heard a fun retelling of a classic tale in Peter vs. the Wolf. Intermediate Concerts: These concerts in Kodak Hall for fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders are tied to language arts, social studies, and other areas of the students’ curriculum. In February 2012, students learned about the unique qualities of each orchestra section in Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead.
The Around the Town Concert Series: These concerts partner the RPO with community venues such as churches, synagogues, and community centers and are free of charge. Concerts in October 2011 and March 2012 featured music by Dvořák, Brahms, Shostakovich, Copland, and Beethoven.
Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra: This 100-member symphony orchestra is composed of young musicians in grades eight through twelve from schools throughout the greater Rochester area. RPO musicians serve as mentors and coaches to these outstanding young artists and joined them in the annual RPO/RPYO Side-by-Side Concert in March 2012.
Symphony 101: This engaging, conversational series offers audiences an in-depth look at classical music. Maestro Arild Remmereit guided concertgoers through the history, highlights, and unique qualities of his concert choices for the season, accompanied by vibrant musical excerpts performed by the orchestra. Audience members had the opportunity to choose one piece on the program through online voting.
Community Activities: RPO ensembles performed concerts at Camp Good Days, Brooks Hill Elementary, and in Inlet, NY; and conductors and guest artists made several visits to schools and community centers in the region. In addition, dancers from the Rochester City Ballet performed short excerpts from The Nutcracker at The Strong’s National Museum of Play and area libraries in advance of the annual holiday event.
Special Event: The RPO and WXXI joined forces for the second Education Takes the Stage luncheon. The event featured guest speaker Dr. Margaret Martin, founder of the Harmony Project, which provides instruments and music lessons to thousands of the most vulnerablechildren in Los Angeles.

CAMPAIGN FOR ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE
The RPO launched the Campaign for Artistic Excellence in 2012 to support the many artistic initiatives the orchestra has planned for the next several years, including building a reputation for distinctive programming that already has secured the RPO a place in the 2014 Spring For Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. The Campaign for Artistic Excellence will enable the orchestra to work towards its long-term goals of attracting and retaining the best possible artistic talent, continuing a tradition of community service, building our national recognition, and ensuring financial stability and organizational excellence.
THE CHRISTOPHER SEAMAN CONDUCTOR LAUREATE CHAIRThe Christopher Seaman Chair is supported by funds from Barbara and Patrick Fulford and The Conductor Laureate Society, recognized below. We sincerely appreciate the support of these most generous patrons, who made it possible to honor former music director Christopher Seaman’s 13 dedicated years in a very special way. Listings are as of August 31, 2012.
