Attempting to build a future for Latvia without manufacturing is like asking Māris Strombergs to ride his BMX without pedals.

Manufacturing is key to economic breakthrough Thesis of Erik Reinert book: How Rich

Countries Got Rich and Poor Countries Stay Poor

Rich countries build things with high knowledge and design content

Poor countries consume manufactured products from rich countries and sell commodities

Government policy not market forces key to achieve wealth

Robots and manufacturing

Few jobs in traditional manufacturing Precision-built modern products favor robot

production even with the availability of low cost labor

Robots are now becoming much more flexible and threatening many high skill occupations. Driverless cars – millions of professional drivers Watson – millions of call center workers,

lawyers, doctors, professor jobs threatened

Latvia needs a different kind of manufacturing

Page 6: Robotics, 3 d printing, crafts and future of latvia 2013-03-12

Return of manufacturing to US and EU Capital intensive, highly automated,

high volume – less costly than from China

No growth in US, EU jobs – work done by robots

China is shifting to robotic production to compete

Page 7: Robotics, 3 d printing, crafts and future of latvia 2013-03-12

Implications for Latvia

Robotics threatens many existing jobs

No more large factories Fewer service jobs with high pay Increased automation in larger farms

threatens farm employment Little prospect for competing as a

low-wage economy

3D printing reopening a future for local production Much of manufacturing is not suited

for large scale factory production but fits 3D printing.

3D printing no economies of scale in production fabricates one item at a time through a

printing process similar to two dimensional dot matrix printing.

Economies through networking Digital design drives the printing process

Manufacturing becomes desktop much as publishing became desktop.

Multiple identical, or varied copies can be made from the same basic design

Networks for sourcing raw materials, components

Internet portals for designs – www.thingverse.com

Portals for global sales – eBay, www.etsy.com

Page 12: Robotics, 3 d printing, crafts and future of latvia 2013-03-12

Opportunities for Latvia

Low volume, high quality, highly differentiated, personalized products not favored for factory production

Design intensive products in low volume

Products requiring rapid turnaround, flexible response

Products from locally available materials – wood, clays, stone, linen, other textiles

Art and high level crafts

Page 13: Robotics, 3 d printing, crafts and future of latvia 2013-03-12

New future for local production 3D printing, printed electronics and

other desktop manufacturing tools Access to global networks of

expertise, tools and materials Thingverse – open source library of tools

and designs for thousands of products Global distribution through online

marketplaces like eBay

Products

Low volume parts for cars, trucks, aircraft, rail, industrial parts, unique harware items

Boats, cars, other transport Toys, playground equipment Craft, art items from manymaterials Personalized gift items, corporate gift products Prototype parts Press forms for injection molding, volume

production Desktop manufacturing equipment and supplies

Laser cutting, coatings, multimaterial Alternative feedstock – fiberglass, other materials

3D printing status

About where 2D printing was in early 1980’s Limited materials – plastic resin common. Expensive raw materials Simple colors Slow

Digital design, networking and communications technology now very sophisticated Integration with social networking via open source

Outlook – expect similar to evolution of 2D printing. Industrial grade machines sophisticated - $10,000+ Competition for home craftsman market drive down

costs - $1,000

Crafts system and Latvia’s future The crafts system was highly developed in

Latvia prior to 1918 Medieval crafts guilds were modernized after

independence with the addition of formal education to the historical master – apprentice teaching

Crafts system was suppressed during Soviet rule Crafts system was renewed after renewal of

independence in 1991 Mastercrafts certification is recognized through

most of Europe Crafts combined with formal education offer a

platform to launch 3D printing based manufacturing in Latvia

3D printing empowers crafts based manufacturing Master craftsmen have shops across

Latvia where they produce furniture, art objects, ceramics, jewelry, homes and other products

3D printing expands the range of products that can be produced Low volume automotive, aerospace and

other industrial products New forms of products in new media by

traditional crafts masters

Global resources available to Latvian craftsmen Makers fairs, open source portals

with designs and suppliers as well as sales channels empower mastercraftsmen working with 3D printing, printed electronics and other capabilities

Crafts – formal education partnership Master – apprentice:

Learn to make things by doing Learn small business management Certification through crafts system

Doing informed by formal knowledge High tech draws on scientific research Best practices are taught in classrooms and labs Post secondary ed positioned to train new entrants

Skills must be acquired to use tools and to communicate and collaborate Networking, open source key to rapid advancement Much learning Internet based, learn to cooperate

through direct contact

Power of open source model Open source augments the master-

apprentice relationship Open source brings the power of a

community into the learning – doing relationship

Latvia should adopt the open source model to build next generation manufacturing into Latvia

A scenario for the future

Latvia develops a fifth industrial revolution manufacturing system to meet needs of locally and globally through web

Community of makers – open source design, portals for sharing designs, experience and teachings, modify mastercraft certification to include 3D printing, and open source, networked design, supply chain managment and marketing and sales

Formal teaching through programs delivered through regional higher education

Page 24: Robotics, 3 d printing, crafts and future of latvia 2013-03-12
