ABOUT THE PIECE
Two kinds of notation
Voices use Byzantine neumes with added symbols to show what the instruments are doing.
Instruments use Western staff notation with a vocal transcription.
Singers do not need to be able to read the staff notation, and vice versa.
Two performance parts are available: one for all singers, and one for all instruments.
* A recording is available as an 'aural score' to convey nuances that neither notation can show.
Tuning
Like the Greek Byzantine system, this piece divides the octave into 72 equal microtones.
2/72 = 33.33 cents in Western equal temperament, or one-sixth step.
Intervals used in this piece:
44 wide fifth 42 perfect fifth 40 narrow fifth
26 wide major third24 major third 22 narrow major third
20 major or minor third (depends on context)
18 minor third 16 narrow minor third
* Plus combinations of these.
* Common intervals in the Greek Byzantine scales: whole steps: 10, 12, 14 half steps: 6, 8
Rhythm
This piece uses three different rhythmic textures:
1. Recitative (Speech rhythm)
Sign:
Voices: Sing the words in exactly the rhythm you would speak them. Neumes show pitch, not rhythm.
Strings: Follow the singers.
2. Partial speech-rhythm
Sign:
Voices: Follow notated rhythms very freely. Don't stay with the steady beat in the strings.
Strings: Keep a steady beat (conventional metronome marking).
3. Steady beat, mixed meters
Voices and Strings share the same quarter-note beat, but not the same meter.
Sign: Conventional tempo markings
Voices: Follow text stresses (downbeats of bars), resulting in "mixed meter". Try to bring out those meters. Some downbeats are on rests.
Strings: Follow a regular meter.
* The mixed meters in the voices often differ from the regular meter in the strings.
For example, on p. 33 the instruments have four bars of 6/4 meter, while the melody has seven bars of: 5/4, 3/4, 3/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 2/4.

INSTRUMENTS
Exact instrumentation is flexible. This score is for a single line, which could be played on a pluckedor keyboard instrument. It would also be possible to use four bowed strings: viols, violas, cellos, etc. (they may need amplification to be heard over the chorus).
For a more percussive sound, use two or more (plucked) electric basses or guitars: tune basses an octave lower and use harmonics to play the notes given below (a single bass cannot play all of the rhythmic patterns).
Accidentals ...apply for the whole bar but are often restated.
+2/72 (33 cents) *
-2/72 *
+6/72 (100 cents or 1/2 step, as usual)
-6/72
Accidentals are additive. For example:
+8/72 (+6, +2)
- 4/72 (- 6, +2)
+4/72 (+2, +2)
Tuning / Scordatura
Tuned to the given frequencies, the four bottom notes should be equally spaced,14/72 apart.Tune the remaining notes (fifths, octaves, major tenths) to the bottom notes.
?
* These special accidentals were created by Ezra Sims; the font used for all accidentals in this score is by Ted Mook.

VOICES
This piece uses only SIMPLE DIATONIC SCALES, tuned in the traditional (slightly altered) Byzantine modes.
Western singers will find the tuning intuitive.
For example, a common version of the Major scale in this piece is:
14 10 6 12 14 10 6Ni Pa Vu Ga Di Ke Zo Ni Wh Wh Hf Wh Wh Wh Hf
For correct tuning and rhythmic coordination, always listen the instruments.
The four instruments are tuned in three different diatonic scales (1 and 4 share a single scale).
Unisons, octaves, fifths, thirds, etc. with notes in the instruments should be adjusted to be exactly in tune with them.
Below the neumes, numbers show what the instruments are doing:
— A number directly below a neume means the instrument plays a note at the same time: — Sometimes, for extra clarification, an added martyria shows the exact scale degree of an instrument's note: Without the martyria, the number does not show an exact pitch.
— Rhythmic patterns look like this: ; repeated or abbreviated: Usually your first note in the section tunes to the first note in the pattern (see next page).
* The font used for the neumes in this score is the Byzantine Music Font Package BYZANTINA, developed by Stefanos Souldatos and Father Ephraim, priest-monk at St. Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery in Arizona.
Voicing
Each part is a character in the story:
Tenor Chorus: ison,* the voice of MARY (except Verse 24.2 - end, the Cantor is Mary)
Bass Chorus: ison, the voice of the MAGI (Verses 4-5)
Soloists Cantor: the NARRATOR Baritone Solo: the voice of JESUS (Verses 8-9)
* When basses sing the melody in Verses 4 and 5, tenors sing the ison.

HOW THIS PIECE WORKS (some optional music theory reading…)
Tuning shifts In each section two instruments, tuned 14/72s apart, accompany the singers. Some notes in the melody tune to one of the instruments (usually the one that plays the first note). The other notes tune to the second instrument (notes with similar accidentals tune together).
At the next section, the notes that were tuning to the second instrument act as 'common tones' or pivots, as the second instrument becomes the first of the next section, and a new instrument enters.
Harmonic circles A typical verse (see below) makes three of these upward shifts of 14/72 whole-steps. In Western scales, three whole-steps of 12/72s would reach up six half-steps—a tritone. But each 'wide' 14/72s whole step adds one third of a half-step (33.33 cents or 2/72s); three of these add up to an extra half-step overall. So six 'wide' half-steps span the same distance that seven half-steps normally do.
The music therefore arrives a perfect fifth (=7 half-steps) higher, not a tritone. All this takes several minutes, so the effect is a gradual change rather than a sudden shift.
The design on the cover is a visual analog for this process: The pattern might look symmetrical at first, but there is a subtle assymmetry between what the mind expects, represented on the left (7 gaps between points = 7 half-steps), versus what actually happens in the music, on the right (6 gaps = 6 wider half-steps). The point at the bottom of the circle is the tonic, the fifth is at the top, and the point in the middle is the major third.
In the refrain, the music falls quickly back down a fifth to finish the verse where it began. Other verses move through different harmonic circles via a similar process.
7th Partial The natural seventh partial of the overtone series, a haunting "bluesey" interval slightly below an equal-tempered minor seventh, is an important sound in this piece. This 'narrow' seventh is the inversion of the 'wide' 14/72 whole step (within a few cents)—for example, in Verse 1 Section 1, it is the distance from the 2/72-raised low A to the G above it:
