Petals 5, 15–25 mm long, white; calyx irregu- larly 5-toothed; stamens 10; ovary 1. Blooms May 9–June 13. Tree to 25 m. Woods, woods margins, roadsides. Spines to 2 cm, usually present at bases of leaves. Inflorescence to 20 cm; leaf to 40 cm.
