We Love Telly, The TicketI've been working in subbing and production across The Daily Mirror's supplements division.

What’s on TV

Acting deputy editor (six months)I was asked to help while the million-selling weekly and its website underwent a major redesign.

The deputy editor acted as the editor and I stepped in to do some of her normal duties, such asgiving pages a final read, helping with the IPC awards and attending editorial planning meetings.

Cedar Communications

Editor, Tesco Christmas Gift GuideI was initially asked in to help with the 2005 edition after the previous editor walked out. I got theedition to press and wrote a memo making some suggested production improvements. I was invitedback to edit the next two annual editions.

Publicis Blueprint

Editorial consultantPublicis were asked to pitch for an ntl magazine aimed at its broadband customers.

The brief – to enable ntl customers to fully utilise their internet subscriptions and motivate them toupgrade to its high-speed broadband services.

My proposal – I produced a dummy that was segmented into three editions that would be aimed atand delivered separately to low-, medium- and high-spending customers. The editorial wasdesigned to advise customers of all ages on how to get maximum use out of their subscriptions, while pointing out the benefits of upgrading.

The client for the second project was Sky TV. My brief was to write a supplement called Your, aimed at Sky's female, non-football watching subscribers, that would be bound onto the back of itsaward-winning You magazine. My solution was to highlight how Sky's entertainment servicesoffered viewing that could be enjoyed by the whole family sitting down together, along with theeducational value of its documentary channels for children.

I developedTelewest’s 120-pageTV listings and customerguide into a 216-pagetitle in 13 regionaleditions, whilesubscriptions (40 percentof which were activelypaid for by customers)grew from 60,000 to 2ma month.

Telewest asked ScorpioMultimedia (which it part-owned) to produce a newtitle focused on itsinteractive servicesavailable via the remotecontrol – email, shopping, banking andgaming – as well asmulti-channel viewing. Ihelped to design the newtitle's format and editedit.

NTL (Telewest's partnersin Scorpio Multimedia)wanted its own brandedlistings guide. I workedclosely with NTL'sagencies, Lambie Nairnand Saatchi's, to producea glossy channel guidewith TV star features.Subscribers had to opt-into pay for the title, whichachieved an official ABCof 229,000 a month.

Scorpio launched aspecial edition of zap forthe newsagents, withcomprehensive listingsand film, sport andtelevision featurescommissioned fromleading writers.

For this specialcollector's issue tocoincide with ThePowerpuff Girls movie, Inegotiated with CartoonNetwork eight monthsahead of its release.

The result was that wereceived exclusiveartwork drawn speciallyfor our cover format.

This was a good fit withthe magazine's readers.Research by the clientrevealed that many oftheir customers ownedtheir own boats.

The central section of themagazine was a guide tothe ports visited by thecompany's threeclippers.

I commissioned TheSunday Times traveleditor to write the portguide.

Other sections: fashion, celebs who had travelledon the clippers, the bestnovels about the sea,and wines to seek out ineach port.

I edited the TescoMagazine and ChristmasGift Guide for threeyears.

It had a print run of 4.5mand was produced in twoeditions – UK andIreland.

Part of my job was theeffective promotion of theTesco Direct onlineservice, which achievedhuge growth across thethree editions.

The Gift Guide hasmagazine elements anda large catalogue sectionthat requires a hugeamount of carefullychecked and reviseddata – prices, guides, advice, orderinginstructions, cataloguenumbers.

Fashion and jewellerywere vitally importantsections.

They required extensiveliaison with Tesco's headfashion buyer and manyrevisions.
